'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan Confirm Holt Move

I am losing the will to live. Dave Whelan must bloody love Villa, anything he can get rid of we'll take and we give them Albie on loan and money!

The Birmingham Mail are confirming a quote from manager Uwe Rosler that I saw nigh on Tweeted but didn't have a source for.

Their manager has confirmed that he is on his way to Villa - or may already be here - for a medical because a loan until the end of the season has been agreed between both clubs.

'It's a great opportunity for Grant to work under his previous manager who got the best out of him. We will see how he does at Villa and then we will see where we are in the summer.'

The 32 year old has been out of form and fitness for Wigan this season, but has made 21 appearances scoring twice.

My dreams of us actually playing football which this squad can do in spells quite well, are obviously a pipe dream.

Well the medical will no doubt be a formality, welcome to the club Grant, no doubt he'll give his all and look to be as successful in the Premiership as he was for Norwich so it's not personal, but apparently Holt wasn't required when Lambert joined the club himself and insisted on the young and hungry approach that has summarily meant we have ignored the very players from the lower leagues that that policy should've seen us go primarily for, and because this season is just as pathetic as the first we are obviously out of ideas and we are now going for experience, that we didn't apparently need and was overrated, but not bold attepmts at experience - we are hoping somebody can replicate their form from one stand out season and not somebody who showed season upon season a job could be done - for a striker - getting into double figures.

Yes Holt has a phenomenal goal scoring record in the divisions below - this season aside - but so do many others that could do a job for us for the next decade, and I'm pretty sure we could all name a few.

Last season he scored eight in 38 games for Norwich, and prior to that had hit 18.

I give up.
It's not a problem - just a temporary body since we are one down. No risk involved and we can spend the money elsewhere.
Chris Hamer
I don't know what all the fuss is about. It's a loan for cover. Lambert will get the best out of him as he did before. Just need to get him fit.
Can't see the problem. It's a short term loan. If it was the only signing, then yes, but I don't believe it will be. He was just the first who was available. Hopefully a defender and one if not two midfield options. We do need one signing to excite, like Defour, I do agree but I think Holt could be useful short term
Everyone moaned about our short term loan for Robbie Keane, and look how useful that was.
So now PL has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous with wanting only young players to now the other end of 35. You couldn't make it up. I do agree with Grizzly that it is just a loan etc.
I would have preferred Klose. The two we really need to replace (apart from Luna) are El Ahmadi and Westwood. Delph deserves better alongside him.
Agree with Grizzly, get a grip, this is a short term loan. Why bring in a fresh faced untried player into a situation that could turn out to be a relegation scrap. Lets have some fighters and experience - even Holt. I remember him giving our defence some problems last season, so why not other relatively poor defences at the lower end of the PL? Only 17 games to go and he is just back up.
Jelavic off to Hull City. Grant Holt to Villa. I'm 100% behind the team, but I'm worried.
A fresh faced untried player might be good. Grant Holt has proven to be fat and useless. Loan or not, this is a worse signing than I could ever have imagined. Totally stunned. Awful.

GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bikini Inspector
Just take a look at this record in the PL, not too bad actually. He is only 32 and is just backup. Wonder what the moaners would be saying if Benteke gets injured in Febuary?
Dont know what the fuss is about in for cover has PL experience is very good at bullying opposition defenders into making mistakes it is not as though he is going to start many games unless the Beast gets injured
Ksarge - maybe we'd stop playing it long?
Haha Robbie Keane is like Pele compared to this over the hill even more over weight Wigan reserve...A joke and added to that we don't even need a striker...Lambert is preparing us for the Championship his level.
Mike - we would still play it long even if Bannan re-signed as a loan striker.
Last nights game reminded me of the Newcastle 2nd half performance last season which changed our season and the players confidence. I am now looking forward to the Liverpool at Anfield Game. Benteke is back, he looked back up for it again. Vlaar will be fit, he was good. The reason we conceded was the change of tactic and Bacuna having no idea where he was playing. Once sorted we looked much better.
lol People think he is being signed as back up lol. No my friends, This is a main signing.
Bikini Inspector
Good point well made Sarge! lol
I agree with krfeskivilla. No problem with this loan deal at all, not only is he good cover but I'm sure he'll boost the dressing room and help the youngsters in training. PL needs to make sure he gets some midfielders in though, which is the priority this season. Unfortunately though, I've heard that the Defour deal is no longer an option.
Are you Paul Lambert then, Bikini Inspector?
I have absolutely no problem with this. He's an ideal replacement for Kozak in the squad. However, if this is our only transfer activity then I would be worried. We need to replace Okore this month too. If Vlaar gts injured again (which he might well do) then the rest of our back 4 won't keep us up.
no problem with signing him on loan errr just could we sign a winger on loan as well to supply him with crosses sure Benteke would like that as well. Did PL not say that he thought Helenius could step up to the mark with Kozak injured though ?
so we go from young and hungry, to old and well fed.... lerner out
Ali Arab
Play real wingers wide of a striker? Never!
Somebody please explain to me why we signed Helenius if not for situations like this? We play one up top so Benteke will start every game providing he's fit so why are we signing another back up when we already have one? Surely Helenius can come on and give us a burst for 20 mins if needed and at least benefit from game time plus we still have Gabby, Weimann and even Bowery to cover that position if necessary. I dont know what we are paying for him or what % of wages we are covering but whatever it is its a total waste of money!
Lion Heart
Well it's too late in the season to be hoping Helenius and Bowery come good, so why not someone that has actually scored in the PL before? 6 month loan, it's no big deal (literally). Yes, not very ambitious, but that's just where we are right now. Lets just see what quality midfielder we bring in, because we are going to do that Paul aren't we?
Stephen Jay Hawkings
He's a hungry young player. He's playing for a sandwich.
But in all seriousness, I'm not too upset about this. He's scored a fair few in the premier league before, and is a complete**** to opposition defenders, which might help us against those in the bottom half of the table when Benteke looks disinterested. If he's our only signing I'll be significantly more *****ed off.
Sorry about the swearing Mike/Fear!
pssst Stephen Jay rumour has it that Heskey was seen in the vicinity could be the creative midfielder your looking for :) Whatttt 6ft tall ex Villa experianced midfielder under Mcleish you all moaned about missing Barry so there you go lol
Play him up front with Benteke (take a bit of pressure off him) play Gabby and Albrighton out wide, they can double as attacking wing-backs and as cover for Lowton and Luna who are crying out for help. Job done, or as near done as we can get with what we have:-(. Dont expect it to happen though.
It's a loan, who knows, he may help to keep us in the PL. Just hope we get a midfield in place PDQ......
Pride of Lions
He's gonna be our Nolan. Big payr for defending set pieces and for smashing into defenders. Everyone chill. Winger and creative midfielder now please.
Is holt hoping for a World Cup call up?
Stop whinging10
Paul Lambert is yet to sign a player from another Premier League club.
Another promising youngster, up there with fellow strikers Bowery and Helenius. Glad to see that Paul is sticking by his strategy of signing young, motivated and up-and-coming talent. I wonder if he's as mobile as Kozak?
lol Merlin, if Lamberts new policy is to sign big slow old lumps, then why not? He'd still probably be more creative than any midfielders we already have ;)
Stephen Jay Hawkings
Apologies for the long post - first time poster, long time reader so a few things i would like to chip in! There are 3 things which stand out about this move which I think have everyone so upset:- 1. it has to be seen as a big slap in the face to Helanius and Bowery- why sign them if they are not going to get a run? Whatever re Bowery, but Helanuis for one seems to have real potential and will now probably throw his hands up in the air and want to leave. 2. there are clearly other positons which need reinforcement / quality and, given the oft mentioned lack of funds, should have been reinforced first. 3. Most importantly, it signals a real lack of ambition on the part of Villa - as it seems Lambert's answers to this seasons problems are Hoolahan and Holt. Hardly players to cement Villa's drive for this and the next few seasons. Villa are screaming out for a bit of quality. I think fans are happy to take young, hungry players on board - but there needs to be some higher end players in there to drive, otherwise we are rudderless. I am not a 'Lambert-out' shouter by any means, but his moves in the transfer market baffle me a bit. Has anyone done the maths? How much has he spent in the last 2 seasons on players? Has it given us any real value (other than Benteke)? Its all very good and well to blame Lerner - but he has still put 30-odd million in over the last 2 seasons. And, Benteke and possibly Vlaar aside, our best players on the pitch certainly seem to be players who were already there. I know wages are an issue, but it seems as though we are wasting money in that regard too by acquiring lots of players of lesser / development quality who arent close to getting a run.
I disliked Mcleish because of how his teams played football but like Lambert I believe a wage cap has been put on and cant be changed. If that is the case then we will not be seeing any quality players arriving at Villa Park my guess is the two remaing top earners at the club are Gabby & Given on about £65 k a year thats not counting Bent of course. This is why we are seeing youngsters, the unproven (Kozak) and lower league players. The only good thing is if we drop to the championship we will already have a championship wage bill.Cheers Lerner blame the manager is the easy game especially if he is gagged and cant say what the problem really is you can spend 20 mill a year on one player but if your only offering 25k a week who are you going to get ?
