'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Are Villa Progressing?

Are we progressing?

It's a tough question to answer, so I thought I'd pull some stats together to compare with where we were last season and the season before.

Firstly, after 20 games, we sit on 23 points - this is 5 points more than at the same stage last season and the same vs the season before that when 'he who shall not be named' was in charge.

We have won 6 games thus far vs 4 at the same point last season and 5 the previous season.

The area that has really helped us is the 'goals against' area where we currently average 1.25 goals against this season vs 1.79 last season (total) and 1.39 the previous season.

The main worry however is goals scored. With Benteke short on form, we are only averaging 0.95 goals per game vs 1.21 last season, and, rather worryingly 0.97 under 'he who shall not be named' !!

Let's hope that the creative area (particularly in midfield) is addressed in January. Another positive is points against the previous seasons 'top-4' teams. We have amassed 6 points already this season, against only 1 last season, and 3 the season before, proving that we can indeed beat the big teams if we try.

So there you have it - there are some positives against the last 2 seasons, but we do really need to increase our goal threat - playing with 3 defensive midfielders (Delph, KEA and Westwood) has at times hindered our attacking 'spark'.

We've actually looked a better side playing 4-4-2 at home.

What do you guys think? Can we take any comfort from how this season has gone so far, or is it another false dawn?

Here's hoping for 3 points from Arsenal, Liverpool and West Brom! UTV!

One of the best defensive records away from home and our 2 best CB's are out injured - are we progressing? errr Yes!

This season has been shocking , we are getting worse by the week .
will tell you in February.... phase one accomplished, get rid of anything that smelt of oclown.. now lets see who we get in January.

We were doing fine and everything was going to plan until we had our bad run ,which all teams have! Sadly for us we have such doom and gloomers as fans that we only look at that run and not the positives of the 5 or so games un beaten before that run ,or the heart of the team being out injured etc! No ,I think we are doing ok and the young squad is doing as good as ten other teams in the prem. A few good signings and we should be safe from a relagation battle and fighting for a top mid table finish! For me that's progress !

At the start of the season we carried on where we left off last season playing really well and carrying real threat. Since Bentekes injury things have gone downhill. For me the guy is still carrying that injury and looks a shadow of himself forget the hes not the same player quotes of course hes not if injuried. I believe in any of the chumps league clubs with their bigger squads he would not be playing but with our smaller squad we are desperate for his goals.Have said all along we need some experiance and attacking quality in midfield but on a small budget unless we turn to loans cannot see us buying quality in January. The net result of the above is the awfull football we have witnessed in the last few weeks, have stuck by Lambert but do not believe in offering any manager immunity from the sack providing he just keeps us up, if so we should have kept Mcleish we are Aston Villa and should aspire to more than being a Wigan or to the point a Norwich and no disrespect meant to either of those clubs.
It's a young emerging team, although some of Paul Lamberts additions and tactics leave me baffled, limited creativity in midfield, inadequate young cb's,go for Heitinga to partner Vlaar, and an attacking midfeilder,we have enough defensive midfrielders in KEA and Westwood, maybe popov n Slavchev both Bulgarian, both affordable and would be at home with tonev and Stan, watched both on You tube and like both these players,I also feel that 3-5-2 is our best formation, anyone feel the same ?,

Agree with most of the comments above... in my humble opinion we have progressed, but only a little bit vs last season. Get some quality in and Benteke back in form and it could be a 10th-11th place finish this season which would be a good improvement on last!
We are progressing perfectly into the new Wigan Athletic FC of the premier league buying cheap players paying cheap wages but without the entertaining Roberto Martinez style football played, we are shocking to say the least, anybody that says we play good football i just cringe tbh
Agree with the above, but tbf the so called messiah caused our much loved them an awful amount of financial disaster, therefore we must understand that Mr Lerner has invested a phenomenal amout of money and has to control things better otherwise we could have ended up another Leeds Utd ?,as in my previous comment we need creativity and the Bulgarian players mentioned both ability n financially fit the bill, our football is dyer at times agreed
Bruno Villa
Always amazed about the totally different opinions!! We have been shocking at times BUT without the injuries things could've been so different. It's the same for all teams though and it's a matter of luck. Sure that Lambert would've loved a bigger squad but the fact of the matter is that if we've got a couple of injuries, we're *****ed as the replacements aren't good enough or ready. Lerner is to blame. We've moved on from blaming MON Bruno. Only 1 person. Lerner should've known what was going on or got someone else to if he's too busy NOT being interested or even in the bloody country.
Agreed we have moved on from MON days but if someone wasted my money so woefully I'd be cautious, wouldn't you Villan444 ?,Helenius's agent looking for loan move for him ?,why buy him if not going to give him a run,Kojok is awful in my opinion, hopefully we can unload Bent and Ireland ASAP freeing up much needed funds to bring in experienced c/b and creative midfielders
Bruno Villa
Bruno - I repeat - Randolph Learner has not given us 1p of his own money. He has basically just given the club an MBNA credit card with a credit limit of 100 mill and the club are paying every penny of that loan back - and the club has paid interest as well. This is exactly the same as Hicks and Gillette at Liverpool.
Pretty obvious some of you lads haven't set foot in Villa park in a wile if you seriously think the dross us ST holders have to put up with is progress . 7 goals at home all season , 3 of those in one game , loss after loss , Clueless manager . I bet you'd change your tunes if you paid 40 a pop to watch it !!
Wouldn't Thomas Vermaelen be worth inquiring about,he's out of favour at Arsenal, natural left footer too,Belgian so may make Benteke feel more at home, only on loan though his wages are way too high for us to pay outright
Bruno Villa
PiperUK,do you have inside financial information that others don't ?,wether it be loans or personal monies ?,would you really like to see us like Leeds or Blackburn ,we merely need quality c/b,creative and attacking midfielders and another quality striker,Kojok is pants ?
Bruno Villa
Piper is right Bruno. We're an investment. I never fell for his wolf in sheeps clothing tattoo and new paint job on the pub. Randy's fault for the lack of progress for wasting money which gave him an excuse to tighten up which was probably his plan all along, whilst MON becomes the fall guy. They then try to hush up the pay off in his tribunal. certain media sources/blogs won't say a bad word against the owner but will slate MON forever more. Eck FFS. ECK. There can be no mistake who's to blame. Even for those that hate Lambert. Randy limits him.
Bruno Villa, I agree 100% on Vermaelen, we were linked with him before he went to Arsenal and would be a great addition on loan. However, would we be better off trying to get Lescott on permanent deal???
Pride of Lions
How about saying something positive for once ClivethepesimisticVillan
Results wise, yes, performance wise, no. In a number of our wins this season have been outplayed, and our inability toretain possession when it needs to be keptonly invites trouble from the opposition. I think any players we bring in need to have 3 qualities - the ability to pass to a claret and blue shirt, the ability to keep hold of the ball if a pass isn't on and the awareness to see an open space and move into it. Other than Bacuna, I feel the summer signings have not/will not be good enough (tough I will reserve my judgement on Okore until he comes back).
For Piper and Villian44,if we're an investment only,we're certainly not a very good one,MadIrish Lescott is a good one, doubt we could get anywhere near his 90k a week salary, maybe more like 50k but would prefer Vermaelen
Bruno Villa
He said today on Sky that he is happy with what he has and doesn't envisage bringing anyone in this month so dream on guys.
If we get players in they will be ones we've never heard of, so forget the name mentioned above. Hopefully the signings are more Benteke and less KEA
Oscararc-strange your comment as Lambert said only Saturday after the match that he would like to bring in some older experienced players to help guide his youngsters and I agree with AdzVilla11's view
Bruno Villa
anyone still think losing in the cup to a lower league club is progress unless this one is a 3rd div instead of 4th div
