Cowans - This Is What It's All About

Gordon Cowans has said that he's hoping a number of his current U21 charges can cause Paul Lambert a headache this coming season and work their way into his plans as he's expecting big things from a few of them.

Speaking to the Tamworth Herald following our 3-2 loss at The Lamb the other day, Cowans said he wasn't looking at the result, because he thought the performance showed that a few players were really ready to kick on in the coming months.

'That is what it's all about for me, developing players and moving them up into the first team. Mine and Stiliyan's job is to get players ready for the gaffer and that's what we're striving to do.'

Cowans adds that the team who took to the field against Tamworth had one 22 year old, a 19 year old and the rest were under 18.

'They are good players and I thin that is what we do well here at Villa. There is a lot of talk about the youngsters at the moment, especially with Tony McAndrew taking the NextGen title. They are quality young lads and I hope they will match the likes of Graham Burke and Daniel Johnson who have gone on to the first team of late.'

Those who follow the U21s (formerly known as the reserves) will already have a handful of names that we should see some time from this season, Jack Grealish, Micky Drennan, Benji Siegrist, more from Burkie, Johnson and there are also others who may get a chance in the early rounds of the cup to give them a taste.

Lambert has already shown he'll rely on former Academy graduates, so it's not going to be a shock to see him put faith in those who could be the next crop.

Would like to see Grealish coming on to give Weimann or Gabby a rest now and again

I thought Grealish was our best player on Saturday. I'll be very disappointed if he's not involved from time to time with the first team this season.

Fingers crossed. Who better to guide them than Sid and Stan.
