Lambert - It's Still About Minutes On The Pitch

Following our 2-2 draw with Wycombe earlier today, Paul Lambert has said it's still about getting minutes on the pitch for the players and not the result that counts.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, which unfortunately saw both Andi Weimann (back) and Jordan Bowery (hip) go off injured, the gaffer said:

'We've still got a lot of work to do. We said before it's always about getting more minutes under our belts. We have one or two knocks at the minute which isn't helping and there are a lot of younger kids in the fray. But they never let themselves down and it's about fitness.'

Lambert adds that whilst it's disappointing to have plans disrupted by injuries the positive for him is seeing the younger lads making the step up from the U21's and not overly looking out of place amongst the first team lads.

As for the injuries sustained in this game, Lambert said of Weimann and Bowery:

'Andi and Jordan are both sore so we'll see how they are ahead of Tuesday.'

Lambert certainly is mixing it up a lot playing loads of the youngsters and rotating teams both halves, seems like he is assessing the youngsters here we already have before deciding on wether to plunge back into the transfer market after we sell the likes of Ireland Bent etc

A bloody Desmond. Jack Grealish is going to be exceptional. Could he break through this year? On another note, pre-season or not, I am getting sick of these defensive errors. Please sort it out, Lambert.

Why such a poor attitude towards Lambert...I can't believe the tone of this article....wonder why we're called fickle. I await the usual replies...

Its early days yet Grizz its the final two games you want to keep an eye on the rest are irrelevant from a results perspective... We still have Okore and Benteke to come into the fold...

Is Ron Vlaar actually good enough?

I dont know... I thought he was a good CB before he signed for us... The way I see things is he can only improve thing is its not just him defending and another CB instead of him isnt going to magically fix things like some seem to think... Having said that I think is Okore will be better than him by the end of the season... Lowton, Vlaar, Okore, Luna is far stronger than last season Lowton is definitely good enough, Vlaar will improve I expect both Luna and Okore to struggle initially but Okore will improve Benteke style while Luna may be more like Lowton... The key for us is not to panic our opening games are tough I wont judge the backline til the end of September or early October...

I like the way he is giving our kids a chance and not worried if we are leaking goals now, would rather leak them now so they have something to work on and remember they are pushing the lads hard to get fitness levels up which is what its all about. Okore, Tonev and Helenius will be the ones that make a big difference to our team next season.

Based on what I saw in Germany, Bacuna could be the most astute of all the new arrivals. Can beat his man, looks to pass early and delivers a quality cross...

Giving the kids a try, or not got a clue what he's doing? Jury still out for me. Winning is a habit and one we could do with developing sooner rather than later.

Clarke is good in the air but nothing special at anything else. Vlaar is just better than average at most things. No exceptional qualities. Got to be Baker and Jaws for me. Don't think there's a bad tone towards Lambert atall on this article ( for once ) koolbill.

Dont want to be negative but I have to admit to being disappointed on hearing of clarkes new contract, just not good enough. In my mind it was no coincidence that our results improved when hr was out of the line up last season.

Clarke looks a half decent player, but not necessarily a centre back. Vlaar ticks all the right boxes in terms of attitude, physicality etc, but I wonder if a Scandinavian might be the answer, in the mould of Kent Neillsen/Mellberg/Laursen. Maybe Okone will be the next one...

Erm you've lost me Koolbill? Are you reading what isn't there?

Ps our results improved when Vlaar was properly fit, results had already turned around somewhat when Clarkie got injured but he seems the current scapegoat still.

To be fair. I'd read the article after a long long shift i our beloved city centre and after a sleep can see it was misinterpreted. UTV.

Vlaar and Baker was better than Clark and anyone, but I would hope that Okrore is better than Vlaar because "Concrete" is only average for the PL and sometimes less-than, and is much less likely to improve now than Baker, or, I would hope, Okrore. Obviously Baker just needs to concentrate on not making the daft needless errors that somewhat mis-characterised his last season. Fortunately that easier to do than Vlaar coming up to snuff. Meanwhile...who's cover for Lowton....Stevens ??

I think the cover for Lowton (who will probably be an ever-present in the team) is Herd at the moment in PL's eyes. Hes also looked at Josh Webb briefly in the friendlies. I think PL is still assessing this as its low priority with Lowton being definite first choice. I am sure Okore has experience and transferable skills to be effective cover as well. I actually think he'll go for Byram at Leeds, hes just assessing whether its worth spending a few quid on Byram (3m already rejected by Leeds from Palace) against already having the low cost cover weve already got. Its not like the left back situation, where he obviously doesnt fancy Stevens as he only had a badly out of form/young Bennett, who shown enough promised to be at least considered a good back up for this season, if not a starter against a decent (yet to be confirmed) left back in Luna (who looks ok so far!) Other than this, I think thats it for INs during this window, except if he manages to get all of his unwanted players OUT the door, then I think he'll go for a number 10 if and only if one is available at the right price!

When it comes to cover for Lowton, I'm still not sure what was wrong with lichaj - good pro and fine as a squad player.

mala which errors are you particularly putting at Baker's door? Apart from the og against Reading I can't remember him being caught out of position too many times, or being found ball watching or getting caught dwelling on the ball etc all of which both Clark and Vlaar did time and time again last season. Baker for me was the best central defender we had last year

onlyteaminthemids - yeah I know what you mean, as he was probably on low wages as well. I think it was a straight choice for him between Herd (RB, CB, CM, RM) and Lichaj (RB, LB) and Herd being a little more versatile got the nod as the interim back up...I actually think if Lowton is out injured and all CBs are fit, he'll play Okore there a couple of times, with Vlaar & Baker/Clark in the middle
