Villa Park To Host Rugby World Cup?

Villa Park To Host Rugby World Cup?

Why? It's been announced that Villa Park will be taken over by the oval ball for two games during the Rugby World Cup in 2015.

Thankfully it's only two games as when I first heard about this I remembered the state of our pitch from the good old days back in the 1970's and the sandbox effort in the middle 90's if I've got my decades right.

Two months into the season, thankfully being just two matches, all those men hugging at regular intervals won't cause too much damage.

Villa Park will host the game between South Africa and Samoa on September 26 and then the Australia v 'Play Off Winners' (strange name for a country that) on September 27.

I would imagine Jonathan Calderwood and his steadfast team of Groundspeople (well it's PC you know) are already stocking up on a certain brand of breakfast cereal given the work they'll face in making sure the pitch is tip top for our next game following that weekend.

Speaking to the Official Site CEO Paul Faulkner said of our successful bid.

'We're delighted to be associated with this prestigious tournament and we look forward to hosting marquee matches involving two past winners in Australia and South Africa at Villa Park. This is an iconic stadium which has hosted more FA Cup semi finals than any other venue, along with major concerts and the Community Shield. We look forward to putting on a show which will highlight the uniqur character of our wonderful stadium.'

Pitch wories aside, this is good kudos for the club, and will help give the club plenty of positive press coverage during the World Cup.

Meself I don't get the oval ball interest, but it's also a fantastic chance for Villans who do to get down there and watch some of the best.

I'm sure they can now dig up pitches and relay them after? That might be the case and they'll put in a more durable turf for the rugby - or they might not.

I know they gave reason as to why we didn't host the Olympic matches (which obviously isn't gonna happen anytime soon) but to not host them in the end and now host this instead seems strange. Couldn't really give a hoot about rugby.
