Aston Villa - The Future

avfc_1982 asked in in the forum....

I think the most passionate of fans could be blamed for feeling down, depressed and hurt by the way this season has gone. Hammerings, humiliation in the cup, another relegation scrap we would be forgiven for thinking where do we go next!!

For me I have been critical for some decisions Lambert has made and of some players but maybe, just maybe we are starting to see something with what Lambert is trying to do.

Take away Bradford but since the turn of the year I think we have gradually improved. Silly mistakes by individuals and quick moments of a loss of concentration have cost us points yet the performance from the game can not be taken away. It would see we just need to cut them out and get that bit of believe and it would kick into gear.

Then last few weeks have been some of the best we have played all season with the last two games is coming from behind to actually win!! That to me is fantastic!! This young lions have shown fantastic courage and guile to do that and especially in two important games like reading and qpr have been - this begs the question to the future.

Some would argue they can not see a light but I must say if we stop up, and we are by no means guaranteed these mind, then I think we could have something there to work with. If Lerner backs Lambert in the summer and he sorts out that back line and obviously we keep Benteke I think we could be on for a very fruitful few years of progression.

Westwood was immense for me yesterday and was my man of the match. I love players like him, players how go under the radar, go about there game quietly but do a stunning and important job. He breaks up play, he picks up the ball and cooly and calmly plays the right pass every time! Think how good this guy will get next year!! Lowton another one that will progress, Weimann, Sylla, Guzan all players that for me have the world at there feet.

So for me we get this season over with, we stay in this league and maybe, just maybe, if Lerner helps out and Lambert spends well on the minor weaknesses then could the good times be on the horizon in the next few years of steady progression?

What do you think?

i am proud that villa try to do things the right way, and i think if we can survive this season, because of the age of the team we will only improve. the team has the ability to finish much higher, but confidence is everything and these young players seem nervous too often. again, i think that side of things will improve. sadly i think benteke will go (please don't), but we could probably get £25m for him now, maybe more - he is certainly more than half as good as Torres. perhaps we can reinvest this and improve again?

We are doing things the right way. I hope we find some more gems around Europe and start recruiting more hungry young talent. A couple of experienced players as well.

I am a bit more focused on the Scouse game. Thats about as far forward as I want to look at the minute. Fortunately they will have far more players off on qualifier duty, and Suarez will be knackered - up to five flights and two tough games in six days, not back in Scouseland until at least the Thursday and only able to train the Friday or Saturday I guess. So he will not be able to play on the burst. But NO WAY Bennett can line up against him on that side...psycho Baker has to be fit and un-stupid for that game. For us only Benteke and Guzan are guaranteed starters, and Benteke appears to be made of kevlar.

not sure what this 'right way' is these days. Three relegation battles on the trot? That isn't the Villa way, right or not.

Stay up (or go down) there will be no investment in players. Villa are commited to buy young and sell on for massive profit. It is the only sustainable way for AVFC to continue. We simply do not generate enough income to compete any other way. So get used to the idea now. Benteke will be gone in the summer and there will be no big name replacements coming in whichever division Villa kick off next season. Villla fans will have to stop abusing explayers too because there will be more and more of them featuring for the 'sky clubs'. At least we are not Leeds or Portsmouth.

Incidentally, if you change the results between Villa and Southampton one game we were 1-0 up at half time and the other we shouldve won.....and we have the 6 points and they lose 6 points.....just see what that does to the league table. The margins are very small.

The future?.... lets take one small step at a time. Lets get survival guarenteed firstThen lets see what Lerner is doing..... player wise, the squad is not up to scratch for the Premiership, which goes back to survival. If we do, it will be the ce the parting of the waves.....

And Wigan just scored in the 90th min - *****ers. Dont count on Man Cituh beating them in their outstanding fixture either - by the time its played they may well be emphatically out of the premiership race. We need to get to the Chelsea game not needing to outpoint Wigan guys.
malacaxeta
In fact - just realised that Wigan dont catch up in games until 7th May (h to Swans just before our game with Chelski) - so even more the case that we need to match them point for point. Satisfying to know though that in seven days we have probably put paid to Reading and Slack Arry Rangers.

Think we are in very good shape. We seem to have a bit of depth to our squad - all young and all hungry. Westwood was fantastic yesterday - 100% pass rate. (74/75). Malacaxeta - I'd be looking at teams like west ham, stoke, Sunderland and Norwich rather than Wigan. It was also great to see all 3 forwards score.
applesmoke
Westwood is brilliant and Weimann has been a revelation
AdzVilla11
Applesmoke - you're right about west ham, stoke, Sunderland and Norwich but you have to add Newcastle to that. I would think they were safe but if they get a run of bad luck like today AND Cabbay stays injured they could drop like a stone. Any of these teams can go on a bad run. It's pleasing that we are getting some form going, we've definitely had our bad run! Obviously, we could get another bad run BUT we have strung wins together which is a big deal. Ten points from 8 games gets us 40 and surely survival. hopefully before Chelsea, which means if we can beat Fulham and Sunderland at home and Norwich away as well as getting a point from Plop, Stoke or Man U, we'll go into the last two games safe and everyone's nerves can relax.. It's a big up turn in form compared to the rest of the season BUT we've beaten Norwich away already this season and Fulham & Sunderland wins are very possible. Is a draw at Stoke or vs Plop possible? Given the Saurez situation someone mentioned it's very possible... Game on! This relegation battling certainly makes the end of the season run in INTERESTING!

If we can keep going and stay up then I believe Lambert can take us far. Well even if we go down I believe he can take us far it will just take a lot longer. Lambert has taken some flak from some put if you look at the big picture and the quality of our team with the average kids in defence we have played very well at times against experienced players. QPR may be bottom but they have a team full off premiership talent and experience which on paper looks way better than ours. You also can’t blame Lambert for the quality of our squad as he had to buy players on lower wages and 20m does not go far when you need several players on low wages. Not all his buys are setting the world alight but every player he has purchased I believe we could sell and get at least our money back which is a refreshing change. He is probably the first manager for a long time we have had than could sell all his transfers and make a tidy profit. If we stay up and sell bent for 12m or more and Lambert is given that with 12m more I believe Lambert can buy us 4 decent players to improve our squad to a comfortable top ten team. The same again the next season and no reason we can’t be pushing top 6 and be sitting financially comfortable for a change. Even if Benteke is sold he must be worth 25m so as long as that goes back into the squad with a 12m top up we should not be seeing another season like this. Guzan, Vlaar, Lowton, Westwood, Weimenn, Benteke are a cracking base of a very good team (Bent is as well but he is out of the picture). Gabby, Clarke, Baker, Delph, N’Zogbia, Slyia, bannan are all good squad players so if we could add a quality CB. LB, DM and AM or Winger to our squad in the summer I can see a good season next season.

I would be amazed if we don't go for a new LB in the summer.....who would you pick?

The full back positions seem to be a problem for a lot of clubs notice Sunderland played Gardner there yesterday. I just hope we can keep our form another win would drag more clubs into it. I deffo do not want to rely on Wigan being relegated given the luck they are enjoying at the moment.Scoring a winner after a dead cert handball in the last minute and having a player stay on the pitch after one of the worst tackles I have seen this season.
Merlin128777
Definitely Ref Aid at the JCB yesterday - Halsey (oh yes) said he didnt see either incident ("missed" them). So then what about the two linesmen - Stevie Wonder and Mr Magoo ? Its between us Wigan Sunderland and Soton - forget about anyone else further up. Theres no way we want to be going to the JCB needing a result, after what we saw yesterday. Especially with that pitch, says Darren......
