Lambert - He'll Delphinitely Be Missed

Paul Lambert has said that Fabian Delph's suspension will be a blow to the team, but it's a chance for somebody else to stake their claim.

Speaking to the Official Site the morning after we all knew Delph would now miss the next two matches after picking up his 10th booking of the season, Lambert hailed his current form and admitted it was a blow to the team:

'Fabian is playing extremely well. His misfortune is going to be someone else's gain. I have a squad and now someone has to step up to the plate and do what he's been doing.'

It may have been a silly booking but Lambert is old enough to know they happen, but we still get the 'go again' mantra:

'You are pressing forward to try and get a goal back and things like that happen, you can't cry about it, you go with the rules and go again.'

Lambert also says he's surprised at how little Fabian has trained since he joined the club given the number of injuries he's had, so he thinks it's been good for him to have a run of fitness and games, and he thinks his performances have shown the increased confidence, and sharpness Delph has been able to get having remained injury free.

This is brilliant news. His job in the team is to tackle, win the ball, and pass it to start an attack ... He obviously can't tackle effectively to have 10 bookings already and every completed pass he makes is a backwards one. Yes he has been chasing well in the last couple of games but as a professional they are all fit enough to do that. What we need, especially in the next two games is somebody who is always looking to play that killer pass and start attacks. Ireland or Bannan would be ideal ... Shame they have both obviously upset Lambert somehow ...
mefromhere
I'd give Sylla the nod,but something tells me it will be either KEA (waste of time and space) or Bannan. God help us!
Pride of Lions
Totally disagree mefromhere. Who's going to win the ball for the likes of Bannan to do his Hollywood rubbish. Bannan is not cut out for this level in this country atall and Ireland looks like he's thinking about something else whenever he plays. If you'd watched the games recently then you'd know than Bannan is doing very well in midfield.
Villan444
Obviously meant Delph and not Bannan. Our recent decent performances have come since Nzogbia has played and Bannan has not.
Villan444
We are in trouble if losing Delph is a major blow to be honest. :(
The Fear
I have watched every game this year and Delph does nothing but run around a lot. Clearly Delph hasn't been winning the ball well enough to be booked 10 times. And I would rather have Bannan trying to go forward than have a player who only ever plays it backwards, usually resulting in it ending back at Guzan to play to Benteke anyway. I'd much rather that pass came from 50 yards further forward from Bannan where he has more options. Our recent performances have resulted in one league win in 2013, brilliant. N'Zogbia has been good but he shouldn't be played down the middle when we have two central strikers on the wings. Square pegs and round holes again.
mefromhere
totally disagree again youfromthere. Delph travels with the ball forward and tracks back and passes in all directions. You will see how he's missed when he's not there. Got no time for players that can only do one thing like Bannan and Bencht. Football has moved on. Fans need to aswell rather than drooling over a hollywood pass or a finish from 6 yards just because they could only dream of doing it themselves but is actually non-effective or detrimental to the collective bigger picture.
Villan444
So somebody who produces a a pass which leads to a goal or somebody who scores a goal even if it's from 1 yard is classed as non effective to the collective picture 444. Ok, that one makes sense. Goals tend to have a big impact on the bigger picture irrespective of whether they came from a one trick pony or a player with a strong all round game. Football has only moved on at the elite of the game with teams that can pass for fun. We are light years from that I'm afraid and should be cutting our cloth accordingly.
SidGodSid
NO Sid. Bannan's passes look really Beckhamesque but they don't get the job done. You need to comprehend the difference between looking nice and having an end product. Bannan has 1 assist all ******** season FFS. I've explained to you about Bencht before and it's not my fault that you don't understand.
Villan444
When is the one trick pony going to get his chance to do his trick if he never gets the ball because he's replaced someone who can do more things like pass and dribble, tackle, header ( common things to most footballers except Bencht.) Cutting our cloth accordingly does not mean playing a goalhanger as it's like playing 10 against 11. As you say we're light years away but the point you're missing is that we're light years away from having the luxury of carrying 1 player who is like a fish out of water outside the opposition penalty box. Bencht needs a worldclass team around him to do all the work so he can tap in. He won't get the chance in this squad.
Villan444
No 444 what cracks me up is that you appear to have some issue with any goal that's scored inside the penalty area and some fixation with the 6 yard box, cos you keep going on about it a zillion times. I hate to break your illusion but a goal is a goal no matter where it's scored from. If someone wellies one in from the half way line it still counts as one. Sorry to break this to you.
SidGodSid
Oh and another thing , Bent has a hundred plus goals and has never played in anything approaching a world class team. Strange that!
SidGodSid
At the start of the season Bannan was playing his balls to Benteke who would win the header to nobody as he was on his own. Now he has a partner, of posts, those balls from Bannan would be a lot more fruitful. And if a player like Bent scores most of his goals in the 6 yard box then perhaps we should get wingers in the position to put low crosses in there to get him the goals. It isn't pocket science really, just like Barcelona don't play 60 yard long balls to Messi because that isn't what he's good at. Bent is good at playing on the last defender for the killer ball ... From a Bannan or an Ireland. Delph hasn't got it and never will
mefromhere
Partner, of sorts Rocket science
mefromhere
Bencht has also never won anything or played in a team that was successful either Sid. That's strange too. Think it's a case for the Hardly boys. No, Bencht just makes the team play in a certain way that they will always be 1 dimensional. He will always score a modicum of goals but never perform well against big teams and the glory will be his and his alone because the rest of the team is working so hard to make up for his inadequacies. If you can't get the ball into the box, how the ***** is Bencht going to score??
Villan444
I'm glad that Delph hasn't got it as whatever it is is bloody useless. Lol. Okay so Benteke is partnered by Bencht, then who is going to get dropped and who's going to track back and harrass defenders and build up play via 1-2s crosses etc.?? We may be the mighty Villa but we aren't allowed to play with 12 players unfortunately!!!! Simple equations of numbers and stats. Bencht and Bannan are championship players at best.
Villan444
Bannan is championship level agreed. Bent is proven at premiership/international level, his goals prove it.
SidGodSid
I think that now Herd is fit, he should play this role
Winsforvilla
I suppose the differing opnions are what makes pub chats interesting in my humble and risk upsetting more folk we dont have a midfield player worthy of the name. The fact that Delph will be missed shows just how poor the midfield is,because he probably would not get into another premiership team. I will go with Winsforvilla Herd or Holman neither with any real skill but both willing workers. Bannan & Ireland are never going to be good enough.
Merlin128777
Bent is not proven at international level by scoring 4 goals at the age of 28 lol. He's proven that he can poach if played as a one touch goal hanging wonder in an average, non successful team in the lower half of the prem. Delph would get into lots of teams imo and would've moved on to bigger things if his career hasn't been half ruined by injuries!!! He's got all the tools required.
Villan444
Only goes to show what a quality goalscorer he is 444, having scored as many as he has having only played for average teams.
SidGodSid
And let's face it he's definitely in an average team at the moment! Or not in it as the case may be. Should definitely be on the bench when fit for the last 20 when Weimann seems to tire mentally and let his quality slip.
