'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dawkins' Evolution

We've heard a lot of good words about Simon Dawkins, and a former colleague adds to that by pointing out we should trust the judgement of Tim Sherwood.

Now I liked Sherwood as a player, so I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Rohan Ricketts I didn't however, so I take no responsibility here.

Speaking to the Click Here Dawkins' former colleague tried to point out why Sherwood was so adamant that Dawkins should be kept on the payrole despite his injury and despite his release.

'Simon has been at Spurs since he was twelve and went on to sign a professional contract with the opportunity to force his way into the first team. Something Simon, for some strange reason, did not and still not has achieved. The unique thing about Simon is he's still at the club yet has never made an appearance.'

Ricketts points out that this is rare in football, and it's something that should be noted in his career because fans should wonder why.

'Well there are two reasons, the first is Simon is extremely talented with lovely balance, smooth control, good pace and an eye for goal. The second is the support from Tim Sherwood.'

Ricketts then explains that Sherwood accepted that former coaches didn't believe he would recover from his injury, but it was something he couldn't accept.

So Sherwood had faith, insisted he was given a new contract and then sent him to San Jose, and frankly the player hasn't looked back. And Sherwood certainly didn't understand why he wasn't snapped up.

I'm usually accused of being pro-optimistic, but I remember the days of of a centre half, Warhurst, who got England caps because when push came to shove and he was put up front he couldn't stop scoring. I also remember Carlton Palmer, and I also remember Guy Whittingham who joined the game late, yet was potentially the first time Villa signed a player to make sure he couldn't play for anybody else - even though he didn't fit our system at the point.

I know nothing of Dawkins, other than injury got in the way. But there is a truth to be told that Spurs keep him on contract.

We did the same with Freddy for injury, it was the right thing to do.

Spurs released him, when fit, and then took him back.

Let's hope Dawkins could be our Darwin on the season.

I hope he's given a run in the team, I think he deserves a go. Who knows, he could turn out to be our saviour........... who knows
Pride of Lions
Any chance he will start today?

not sure Ox, which doesn't really help inform your question does it! Not impossible but being such a crunch game, I'd imagine more likely off the bench. However, you can't second guess Lambert as he seems to tinker and change an awful lot, so really, who knows!?
The Fear
Benteke to score today and maybe get a double.

congratulations for Simon Dawkins on his first ever Premiership game. doesn't really matter whether he was brilliant or useless. it has been a massively long and arduous road for a player that deserves the chance more than so many. lets hope he got any major nerves out of his system and can offer a major contribution to Villa for the remainder of the season
