Lambert Left With Mixed Emotions Again

Paul Lambert has talked about having mixed emotions following our 3-3 draw with Everton today.

Speaking to the Official Site after Everton grabbed a point at the end of the game Lambert was forced to look at the positives.

'My emotions are mixed. I thought we played really well throughout the game. Coming here, nobody gave us a chance. Everton are a right good side. We came here and I thought we played really well. We got the goal through Christian, Gabby's goal was top class. Then the third we did score was world class. The front lads were excellent. You knew Everton were going to come at your strongly, but you just have to try and see the game through, which we never managed to do.'

Lambert also said it was important for us to get a foot hold on the game and not concede before going ahead, I won't comment, but it's another game we haven't taken valuable points from, and whilst it's good to see us being clinical up front given the very few chances we actually created, we are still defensively fragile and we are still struggling to create openings.

Today thankfully we took them, and it is at least a point, but that gaps growing at the bottom and it's not comfortable.

What unfortunately is becoming a bit too common at the moment are lines like this though.

'I probably got criticised for signing him (Christian Benteke) because he wasn't a name, no one had heard of him, people thought 'what's Aston Villa doing signing him'. I'm pretty sure he's put that to bed.'

Might be best to leave the judgements on 'others' until we are actually winning games and not in the bottom three Paul.

Villa give me mixed feelings these days...
CDX_EIRE
He doesnt have a clue. Whats he talking about with benteke? when did any one say anything like that? Villa fans were excited when we bought him. Its just a completely bizarre comment thats come out of no where thats just showing how clueless he is. A few weeks ago he made a similar comment about Andi Weimann, saying no one has noticed how good he is because of Benteke....well yes the fans had noticed that hes one of our best players months ago. And the defense is terrible, no where in the interview does he say anything about the defenders not being able to defend and making lots of mistakes, nor does he mention how we completely fell apart after taking the 2 goal lead

Plan To Stay Up. We had 20 pts before today. This is what I predicted before today. A lot of blind hope & faith here I know but here goes Everton defeat 20 pts West Ham win 23. Arsenal defeat 23. Man City defeat 23. Reading win 26. QPR win 29. Liverpool win 32. Stoke draw 33. Fulham win. 36. Man Utd defeat 36. Sunderland win 39. Chelsea draw 40. Wigan draw 41. We have 1 more point than I thought we would have so far. So 42 pts if all the rest come off. Take off 4 pts for slip ups and we can do it. Not a lot of slip ups that is the problem. But not beyond all hope. Keep the faith. One point better off so far. Beat West Ham and were off and running & can lose next 2 after that. Winning 3 on the trot after that is asking a lot I know but......Come On Villa.

@david - he seems to have meant the defense when he said "I wont comment" as he doesnt want to put the blame on anyone.
villa_de
The only feeling I've got is very down... The same way it looks like we are heading.

I get the impression that PL is trying to boost Benteke's confidence by saying that. He is immense, leads the line and Gets the rest feeling confident aswell knowing he's there and that good. Roy Keaneesque. Confidence is most of the battle. If only we had another experienced CB. Most slated him but I'm sure if we had Collins here, we'd have saved at least 10 points through set pie ces etc.
Villan444
Villan44 - suggest you check last season's stats on how many stupid free kicks we conceded in and around our box (Collins the man culprit). Also how many goals we conceded from set pieces last season. I am all for having some experience at the back but Collins? Headless chicken with no brains. Looked like he put his life on the line covering his own cock-ups.
djvilla
We have been rubbish from set pieces for 3 years. It's not exclusive to this season. It's just highlighted this year as we are dropping more points because of it. We are a pretty small side in comparison to many which doesn't help either. Gone are the days when we had the likes of Laursen, Carew, Mellberg, even Knight, when we were a big physical side.
Ams78
Don't think you are in any position to be smug about your signings paul.
bikini inspector
Doctors are advising me to give up supporting Villa and take up Crochet instead after I was found agreeing with Garth Crooks after todays game when he talked about PL's failure to have any experience in his teams all season..............these are big bloody needles??
griffgriff
Ok you signed Benteke. But you spunked millions away on KEA and Bennett then you failed miserabley to find a decent central defender.
PiperUK
Oh dear, he really is a dick...
Saurat
Every time he opens his mouth he convinces me more that he is clueless. We need a decent manager to get us out of the championship, if Lambert is still in charge next year I'm sure he'll get us out of the championship but it will be to league 1.
AVbornandbred
Still trying to blow his own trumpet when we've been so crap all season and virtually all of his signings have been garbage. Amazing his ego is truly one of the biggest ever shame his ability doesn't match
AVbornandbred
Mixed emotions?..... we're all becoming experts at mixed emotions! Ok his hands were tied in bringing in a CD, cut who the hell is coaching our back line?
Pride of Lions
I don't know one Villan that was disappointed when we signed Benteke, most were bursting at the seems to see him in a Villa shirt??!! As for the game, many more positives, especially going forward but our defence is rubbish, can't believe we didn't sign a CB in Jan. We need to stay up, so I'm sticking with PL and the boys regardless of what I think he has done wrong. MUST win against West Ham, and I back I to score goals, but the other end?? Who knows. UTV
AdzVilla11
Any one see sissoko who Newcastle pinched from under our noses?? No surprise the villa transfer fiasco continues and yet is it just me or am I the only one who thinks Clark is too weak, Bennett is pathetic? We needed a central defender! A left back! We lost culluer, Collins and dunne last season! Dunne still yet to play! We replace one with three! Pathetic. Clueless and a total ***** up from lambert and randy period!! Season ticket at solihull moors for me if we go down!
leelindsay
Another goal conceded from a corner. Three Lambert signings in the back four and they couldn't defend fort Knox against a girl guide with a stick.
AVbornandbred
PL is saying that about Benteke to draw attention to something that he actually got right. He knows we are concerned about; throwing points away again, set-piece defending continually dubious and now being a permanent bottom 3 club.
tokyovillan
Some of the comments on here defy belief. This is the worst Premier League season for years, most teams are poor and not playing well. With a bit of luck or chances that had won us the points in just three games this season we'd be 9th ! and I can think of more than three games where we deserved more. Sick to death of this pass the buck and quick fix attitude of our so called fans who sit at home watching free streams and then knocking the team. We've played well in quite a few games this season including yesterday. Watching QPR, Wigan and Reading last night shows me we aren't the worst team in the league as some keep saying. As for Benteke these forums were awash with comments about a player from a two bit league that no one had heard of. Same for Westwood and Lowton. Everton created many dead ball situations and scored from only one, people are acting as if they are some sub standard team from the bottom of the table ?? Have a look at their home form and tell me who's gone there and rolled them over ?? Joke comments on here lately with little understanding of what is being done to cut the rot and stabilise the club. I wouldn't blame Lerner for leaving with our ***** fickle support, he's been *****ed over by MON, then made a mistake on bringing in McLiesh whilst losing amounts of money no one on here could really comprehend, it's easy to say 20m this, 10m that 90m on wages etc ...... he's the one who's lost it. Be careful what you wish for !
astonmilan
I think the Benteke comments are being taken the wrong way. I'd say he's saying that as he's had so much grief about the 2 new guys?? He's just saying not many had heard of Benteke and look what he's done?? I think his signings have all been ok except KEA & Bennett but its not like he through huge amounts away on those 2!! He's shown what he can do with proper money wiv Benteke!!
gdav
15 corners and only 1 goal conceded from 1!!! Fellaini has scored against better teams this year also. Everton are 5th FFS. Newcastle just beat Chelsea aswell and they only just beat us last week.
Villan444
Agree with Milan. Loads of fans ridiculed the Benteke signing. Lowton and Westwood have been largely excellent.. He did not waste millions on KEA. He's been hit and miss so the jury is still out though bedding play bad yesterday. Bennett has been poor though he'll improve. Our weak spot has been our left back and left side and we've lacked a midfield enforcer. If we tighten up at he back and stick with 4-4-2 then we'll have a chance of staying up.
Villa_Grizzly
Oh yeah - we are certainly going down with merit - apologists here seem to be forgetting the Bradford games. Midfield aside - something is consistently going wrong in the box. Does Lambert even play these goals back in his office - because actually, where he is (pitch level) and also not having gone to Specsavers, he cant really see what is happening. Some of us behind the goal have a MUCH better view of what is going wrong. I didnt see the game yesterday - but is Benteke still going back for corners ? As I have said since last season - Clark is not a centre half. Nathan Baker is a centre half. Now - Vlaar is a centre half who is making some crucial errors and does not seem capable of organising a defence round him. Apart from set pieces into the box, in previous games we have been caught out too many times with 3 on 2 situations which with Clark in central midfield may not happen. There are some options to try and rectify this situation (none of them as good as New CB) but whether they will be utilised is another story. Regarding the midfield "solution" implemented on Tuesday afternoon - its a case of "Oh look Daddy bought us presents at the airport on the way back - again "
malacaxeta
Thursday afternoon - the time just flies by.
malacaxeta
Did you even read the article malacaxeta?? PL is trying these options and gets slated for changing the formation. He went back to 4-4-2 and we defended 14 out of the 15 corners successfully. Fellaini has scored 1 in 2 this year. Much better than Bent's 2 in 11... WTF are you on about RE:presents from airport????
Villan444
just one question. Cissoko or Sylla??? hmmmmm.............
heavy d
Heavy D.. obviously we would all of loved Sissoko instead of Sylla. However we could not afford his wages so we all have to be realistic. Lambert is working with pennies not pounds.
Lernerselves
Sissoko cost under 2million, his, wages, admittedly, must be huge but still... we couldn't afford that.
Villa_Grizzly
By the noises coming from Lambert wages seem to be the biggest stumbling block.
Lernerselves
Got to admit if you had offered me a point at Everton before the game I would have snapped your hand off. They are one of the strongest home teams around. Not interested in the press side of it. And I should mention Nzobia I have been giving him stick for a year now thank goodness hes started to play.
Merlin128777
Newcastle have a wage cap too. Around 40k per week and that's why Demba Ba angled for a move away because they wouldn't give him a pay rise. Surely if there was a couple of million available fees it wouldn't be unreasonable to pay 1.7million and use the remainder to address the shortfall in wages beng requested until Dunne and Warnock are off the books in the summer? It also highlights how money was wasted on players that aren't ready (Bowery 600k + wages) could have been better spent.
