The Record Is There To Be Beaten :(

villa2stoke1 says: 'The record is there to be beaten'

This is my first post. I have followed the forum for a long time but have never been tempted to join in the happy banter until these last few weeks.

But I can no longer remain silent in the face of the appalling negativity of the comments I am reading from my fellow Villa fans. It's time to bring some balance to the forum by pointing out that our club is on the threshold of a remarkable achievement.

First the bad news: even if we can extend our current winless streak to the end of the season - a feat not beyond us - we cannot beat Derby County's superb lowest ever Premier League points total of 11 (2007-8). Nor can we set the lowest total for goals scored as we've already matched Derby's total of 20, and Benteke and Andi do have an annoying habit of popping one in from time to time (so to speak).

But where we have a great chance is the highest number of goals conceded. This record is currently held by Swindon, at 100, but this was for a 42 game season. The best tally since the league was reduced in size is held by, yes, you've guessed it, Derby County at a mere 89.

My calculator tells me that we need only exceed an average of 3.14 goals conceded per game in the remainder of the season and we will set a new record. A tough target but one I think we can all agree is within the lads' capability. We are much helped by Lerner's and Lambert's shrewdness in confining transfer-window activity to the purchase of an unknown 22 year old playing for the French equivalent of Barnsley.

It won't be easy but, as Lambert says, the side must fight like hell. Fame is just around the corner. By the way, in case you're wondering how Derby did in the Championship the year after their catastrophic Premier League season, they finished 18th. I don't know whether we can take that as an indication of our prospects for next season .

That famous old adage is so very appropriate in our current predicament, 'You have to laugh, Otherwise you'd scream'. Tomorrow's another day, the remainder of the campaign begins up at Goodison Park, and we have to hope, pray, and believe that the lads can somehow return home to beautiful Brummagem with three very important points in the claret and blue bag. A victory would set us up very nicely for the massive battle ahead to retain our premier league status. Why villa2stoke1? Unusual user name, and as there's usually a personal story behind each and every user name, I just wondered what your personal story is. I cant recall us beating the Stokies by that scoreline since the late seventies, unless my usually reliable memory deceives me. Come on villa2stoke1, give us the full skinny.

Happy to oblige, glensider: my first Villa game, Easter Monday 1960. Stan Lynn with a penalty (of course) and Bobby Thomson. A classic team including Sims, Hitchens, Saward, Crowe, Dugdale and Peter Mc, Some people you wouldn't want to annoy there, eh; couldn't we just do with them tomorrow? Well, okay, they're a bit old now perhaps and some (most?) are sadly deceased, but they'd at least be good enough for the bench.
villa2stoke1
Thank you villa2stoke1. Appreciate the response. Yes, I agree, couldn't we just do with those 'lads' that you mention in our current predicament. Good enough for the bench? Hey, those chaps would be definite starters. Tell you what, if we're being greedy by including them all, lets compromise somewhat. Just have Nigel Sims in goal, Vic Crowe as skipper and leader, and Peter Mac out wide. They'd complement our current starting line up nicely......and improve the team ten fold!!!!!!

How depressing - we're not even gonna make the record books it seems...
