Villa Fan 'Things Need Sorting' !

Carew AV Legend submitted and said:

Problems need sorting Paul

On Tuesday evening, I like many other Villa fans, endured yet another woeful performance from the club I was considered great. Those days are long gone. Still being a young a villan I wasn't able to witness the glory days of '82 and I'm now starting to worry whether I will ever get the chance to celebrate those days in the future.

The Bradford game and many others I might add, highlighted the weaknesses we have which is extremely worrying based on the status of Bantams respectively. Here are the main problems we have Corners - Our inability to defend corners seems to have haunted our defence since the latter days of O'Neil's tenure at the club.

That is nearly three years; under seven managers (including caretakers) an incredible stat to say the problem still exists. Conceding late goals from corners can't go on it's killing us off in nearly every game. Sideward play - We continue to play sideward passing which isn't how to play attacking football. Here lies the blame with the ginge 'he who must not be named'. The positivity of our football has improved slightly but not dramatically under Lambert, hence the fact our matches still look negative with many pundits labelling us as a team that can't score goals. As an example in the Bradford game I saw Weimann scream on the touchline begging for Bennett to pass him the ball back so he could forward, Joe instead decided to pass to Bannan who continued the defensive passing technique. This kind of technique won't win us games, getting the ball in the net is all that matters not how long we can keep the ball, but that doesn't mean I condone the dreaded long ball style of play.

Free flowing football PLEASE!!!

Team Selections - This is arguably Lambert's biggest downfall since joining the club to be fair. I understand why he bought a few youngsters in the summer, but that doesn't mean you play them all at once. Joe Bennett has got to be one of the poorest players I have ever seen in a Villa shirt and that includes Alan Hutton. But at the moment I'd rather Hutton or Warnock play over Bennett because the lad simply has no defending mentality at our level.

Not picking Bent is sometimes justified when you compare the two, Benteke offers more all round play. But when the club is in need of goals you dont leave out a 24 million striker for a guy we signed from Chesterfield who has only scored 10 goals in 83 games. Barry Bannan is just a lost cause and I really struggle to find a reason why so many fans rate him. The 'Scottish Iniesta' provides nothing but negative play to the team and this great passing myth is seen in glimpses once every 10 games. He gets shrugged off the ball so easily game after game! you would think he actually was a six-year old and it's incredibly frustrating to watch, especially when he is losing it in vulnerable places on the pitch.

I could go on with many more problems but I seriously don't think I need to go on... Lambert if you are listening please don't be stubborn in your tactics, you are a good manager don't ruin that. Bring some experience into this squad, its needed desperately. Get Bannan, Bennett and the other shit out of this club they're dragging us down. And for the love of God use DARREN BENT. Yes he missed a sitter on Tuesday, but how many times has he done it for Villa. This player has saved us two seasons in a row with his goals; he doesn't deserve to be treated this badly. He is a 20-goal-a-season striker yet he can't seem to play more than 20 games a season.

By leaving Bent out for so long, no wonder he gets injured within minutes of playing. Training isn't going to keep him fit when he isn't getting any games under his belt. I truly hope we stay in the Premier league, I even believe we could still make Wembley in the League Cup despite being 3-1 on aggregate. Remember in 1994, Tranmere Rovers need I say anymore. Come on Villa win us a game, don't make it another 2012 I seriously couldn't cope with that type of year again.

Well said Carew AV Legend. I really hope that the message is getting through that our squad lacks inexperience. The same mono-tone excuses during interviews about set-pieces and defending. Well isnt it about time we did something about it? WHU who we all know are owned by those guys who once ran the SHA have acquired 2 decent players in the first 6 days of the transfer window being open....... why do Villa always leave it late? we can't afford to do that this year..... Why sell James Collins when he wasn't scared to get his head on the end of anything, even a boot if it required..... 100% commitment. Oh - he knows where the net is also!! It's simply pathetic that Cieron Clark is our captain. He has the leadership qualities of a teenager in business fresh out of O-Levels. Go get Scotty Parker, Tom Huddleston to sort the mid out. Go get a central defender who can play alongside Clarke or Vlaar. Dont wait until the end of Jan for bargains. We need them now. We needed them 5 months ago!!!

Whilst I agree that Bennett was awful it is far too early to 'write him off'...He shouldn't be playing NOW, I agree 100%, but he did show against Ipswich that he has a lot of natural talent..He is one who should be playing predominantly in the reserves and be introduced slowly into an experienced and settled team..He COULD be a very good player, if handled correctly..He certainly isn't at the moment, and needs to be taken out of the firing line. (Same ideally for Baker and Clark, if Dunne and Vlaar were fit..Two good prospects, but not being done any favours ATM)

Sorry but Clark isnt a CB and he certainly isn't a decent one. He did fine in Midfield. Bennett, Delph, Bannan and Baker are so so bad, just not good enough. Why is nobody within the club passing the message on to Mr Lambo?

I think the Site Admin needs contact the web designer so he can place a programme into this site which replaces the 'Experience' with 'Quality' every time its mentioned... I have to say while I agree on some points I will say playing DB9 will solve nothing only replacing the MF is going to do anything... However playing Benteke for the full 90 every game isnt an answer either when he gets frustrated he is useless and this has shower in our last few except the Swansea game because naturally he didn get as frustrated... Last night had a host of problems (as did recent games) the big thing that frustrated me was Weimann not playing thru the centre IMO we should have subbed Benteke and gabby and went with Weimann and Bent thru the middle... Pushed Bennett into LM brought on Stevens at LB and Carruthers for Bannan... Benteke has been playing far too many matches he has barely had a break I think it was a big mistake to play him last night he has played pretty much every cup game, league game and international since he has joined... I genuinely think if we can bring in a CB, 2xCM, 1 LM or RM we will be fine... Obviously these need to be quality players I dont think we need a LB because I think Stevens can do job...

With you all the way on that CDX cant understand why Bennet was playing if Stevens was available and also agree with Wiemann through the middle. But the midfield is where our biggest problems are would keep Holman and clear out the rest they have all had chances none of them have stepped up to the standard we need. Cant really gauge how good or bad the defence would be with Vlar back and a midfield of some sort in front of it.

True Merlin theres no words to describe MF... Not only am I embarrassed with Villa's recent form I am also embarrassed for defending Bennett I still think he has the potential to be a good player but its fair to say the best he can hope for is to become a poor mans Garry Bale...

If we had a CB I'd say we could push Clark into midfield and at least have a temporary solution to our holding mid problem. A solid covering centre back to partner Baker (and then Vlaar when he is fit again) is a must for me. A quality left back and a creative midfielder are the other important acquisitions. Talk of Coutinho, Internatzionale's young Brazilian playmaker, is an exciting prospect and I think he could help to bring the best out of our attacking players. People may argue that he lacks experience but Prem-experienced players come at a premium and are largely overpriced. An understudy of midfield giants like Wesley Sneijder is not to be sniffed at in my ever so humble. As far as quality left-backs go I'm stumped, not exactly ten-a-penny, are they?

Guys, we have dropped to such a low level that there is a e-mail doing the ronds with 3 oxo cubes on it, the first one has chicken stock, the second has beef stock and the 3rd has the Villa colours on it with laughing stock, that sums it it up for me. COTVABU

Couldn't agree more re: Bannan. If he wasn't Scottish, I wonder if our last 2 managers would even have him in the squad or with the kids. As CDX says, Bencht would make no difference, we're losing the game from the centre of the park.

Disagree. Over reactions and bombing players out of the club as a result of dismal performances doesn't help. Before Christmas Bannan had played real well with Westwood and was exceptional against Arsenal. As to Bent. Absolute rubbish. Clark is a promising centre back having a bad time.

I have to agree with most of the comments, except for poor old Villa_Grizzly who appears not to have taken in what is happening. My dear chap Bannan is lightweight and not up to premiership football and as for Clark his skill level, positional play and leadership qualities are at best poor. He might improve if played alongside an experienced CB but if we continue this sink or swim attitude then he along with all the other current villa squad will sink into the championship and may sink even further, remember div three anyone?

Please don't patronise Pershore. 'Poor Old' Villa_Grizzly as you so eloquently put it has a better understanding of it than to offer some boom and bust reactionary response to intense disappointment. I remember what everyone was saying prior to December when we went on an unbeaten run and had beaten Man city away, Norwich away, Liverpool and were considered to be hard working and organised though without creativity. Yes we have had an awful December not helped by an injury list as long as your arm though deciding in a pen stroke to bomb x y and z out of the club because of that is frankly ridiculous. We need some quality and experience, yes (a midfield leader and a proven centre back) to help in the restructure and the running of the team on the pitch. Beyond that is it time and experience as the club gets turned around. It's a crazy season and this is the massive painful dip. This was always bound to happen when you try and create a whole new sporting philosophy and financial methodology. However, the common answer seems to be a) expect a philanthropic billionaire to engage in unsustainable spending at the drop of a hat or b) sack the manager or c) chase players out the club with pitchforks all of which are quite frankly puerile and stupid and beyond where we are at and what the club are trying to do. Are mistakes taking place- yes. Am I'm I travelling around and paying money I probably haven't got to watch a shower the last month- yes though I UNDERSTAND what we are trying to do, what Lambert is trying to accomplish under difficult circumstances and I believe in the long term we will be a much better, more powerful club because of it though at the moment there are some painful problems and bad moments as the rebuilding continues considerably worsened by our awful injury list. Can I also suggest that everyone stop laying into Ciaran Clarke. He was supposed to be learning and led by international centre back Vlaar but since the latter's thigh injury, Clark has had to lead on the pitch and marshal a defence shot for confidence and keep taking it where it hurts in front of the on-going media circus. He's not hiding, not running though mistakes are now getting made. Though suddenly he's always been a terrible player and apparently has no place at a club of this size. Get a grip. The kid needs to get his head right and re-focus along with Baker but he has my complete support whilst he does. He's in the clubs shirt and the clubs colours and I have faith he'll make it through and become a fine centre back- which is, I might add what every pundit has said about him. Maybe we'll lose one or two but he wont be one of them and I for one would be gutted if we start giving up on players of his obvious potential.

I know it's good to talk, but we all seem to be going round the houses. It Lambert doesn't know where the problems lie now, he never will. It's abouttime he did something about it. The 10th and nothing so far. Three weeks to go....
