Players Must Atone - Second Best

Headline sort of says everything following that performance and the result doesn't it.

I have one positive...I don't believe the players heads dropped. They kept attacking however futile it may have been today. Before November the heads would've gone and on today's showing it could've been double figures.

But the effort and determination to bust a gut really wasn't there today, and that's the most disappointing thing. We've had performances like this before where a 5 yard pass is as difficult as passing a kidney stone, and attempting to control the ball makes you think the team are playing in concrete boots BUT in recent games we've pulled ourselves out of that by sheer bloody grit and determination. We didn't today.

Bad day at the office yes. Freak result yes. We are going to be up and down, and does the result change the progress of our 6 (all in) unbeaten run no and it shouldn't. We were playing Chelsea and that's the best I've seen them play in a long while. It defines our season no more or less than the Liverpool result did.

But days like this aren't acceptable and the players must show they know that. Go down giving your all is all we ask, we didn't give our all today and that hurts.

Anyway, Lambert's after match on the Official Site.

'Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We have been on a really good run but we got beaten up today. We were second best. We never turned up. We have been beaten pretty heavily, but we were second best all over. This will be a wake up call for us, that. We will bounce back! I am sure whoever plays on Wednesday will atone for that.'

And I really hope this line is as true as I want it to be.

'They know themselves that they have let everybody down.'

Let's not let this get in the way or blow the progress we have seen in recent games. That would be a real travesty.

Sorry Mike but there is NO positive. Our worse league result in 50 years. Full stop. Forget that result against Liverpool, the great way we've been playing, the cup semi-final. That result was an absolute horror show. The players should compensate the fans and publicly apologise.

Give them some After Eight mints and they'll be fine! Sometimes we take one step back to take two steps forwards! Boxing Day versus Spurs will show us what the players are really made of, and as its my birthday I expect a decent performance! UTV!

That really hurt, I actually felt sick watching it...feel totally and utterly embarrassed and humiliated, we are a laughing stock tonight...I always back our corner but also tell it how it is when required and that was woeful make no mistake regardless of age and experience...I also thought Lambert got it wrong today, well clearly he did...I do hope we get the required response on boxing day because we have been slowly turning the corner and making progress...whatever we say or do it has gone and the worst I hope it has done is dent the goal difference, points wise and position...I realistically thought we would lose and be where we are tonight...so, IF we can atone for this on Wednesday we will move on and continue with the re-building project and if we don’t...................................?!

kind of glad it was my kids christening today (thank you very much, Jesus) and I had to go to the beach and get ******** wasted on pilsner served at antarctic temperatures. But we have to be able to field a team capable of not losing eight to Chelski under any circumstances - perhaps a different formation would have helped, Mr master tactician ??

It hurts, most definately, it hurts very bad, but it's one match! We all kew it was going to be a bumpy ride.... and what a bump!, but we must all calm down. It's one result albeit a bad one. You also have to give credit where credit is due.... Chelski were excellent ysterday. We weren't. We have to pick ourslves up, dust ourselves down and start again. We have to be behind them on Wednesday, they're going to need it.

Villa_Grizzly stop being a big girls blouse. So we got thrashed. Get over it. Because of one very bad result you say "forget the Liverpoo result" Why choose to be so negative. Here's a spin. Forget the Chelsea result and focus on the Liverpoo result. The best way to be is calm. Neither result should be taken in isolation. Noknee jerk reactions either way. Just continue to support Villa and believe that we will rise again. Keep the faith Villa fans.

just glad he didn't duck or make excuses. that is the only positive for me.
