Laursen Delighted With Guzan Growth

Laursen Delighted With Guzan Growth

Martin Laursen has waxed lyrical about the growth of Brad Guzan this season, as he more than saw him doing the business as a No2 in his spell at the club.

Speaking to the Birmingham Post Laursen explained that Guzan had always given his all and been professional when out of the team, and he was delighted to see him take his first team chance and make the most from it:

'He's playing very well. He shouts, he helps out his defensive players, he helps the whole team with the way he plays. He's very vocal and that's one of the most important things as a goalkeeper. He's a good shot stopper, he's excellent in the air, he's superb. He can be Villa's goalkeeper for the next 10 years plus. That would be good because it creates an identity between the player and the club for years.'

Talking about his professionalism as a No2 Laursen added:

'Even during his time as a number 2, his role was vital. He brought quality to the training sessions. I am sure Brad Friedel would say that he performed well week in and week out thanks to Brad. People like Brad are the sort of people you want to be successful, you want them to do well, and I am delighted he has a place in the team now.'

Guzan has definitely been one of the highlights of the season so far simply because of how much he has come on since we last saw him on the pitch. Hopefully he'll continue to get better and really benefit from him in what is effectively a second spell at the club.

I have to agree, what a signing he has turned out to be! ;-) This season in the premier league, I cannot name a better goalkeeper in regards to consistancy. He really has grown into the goalkeeper that we had hoped, long may it continue and I guess having Given pushing you then this may make him even better.

Always thought Brad deserved a starting 1st team spot and I'm too so glad he is getting what he deserves, a true pro' and a top bloke aswell.

I was saying that Brad should have been number one most of last season. As soon as it was apparent that Given couldn't command his box, it was obvious that we needed him between the sticks. What was most frustrating was reading Villa fans wax lyrical about Given when it was obvious to most with a knowlege of goalkeeping, that he was actually harming instead of helping his defence. Given - good shot stopper, but with no command of his back line and stuck to his line. Guzan - just as good a shot stopper, but with a much better all round game. I know Benteke will get most plaudits but I think Guzan has been our stand out performer this season.
