A Vital Blackpool View On Delfouneso

So how has Nathan Delfouneso done during his spell so far at Blackpool? Well we are part of a network, so I thought I'd ask - I have intelligent moments like this occasionally!

With thanks to Simon from Vital Blackpool.

1 - Were you surprised, annoyed or delighted that you made the move for Delfouneso when you did and did you know anything about the player before he signed?

Not so much surprise in that we always seem to sign somebody we were not rumoured to be after. I think most of us were pleased in that we had signed a Premier League player and not just somebody from the youth team. As for hearing of him before, hhhmmm unfortunately he scored against us in our Premiership season, so how could we forget.

2 - What has been your impression of him in the games he's had for you. Should he have got more pitch time, is he impressing or isn't he living up to his billing?

Well he started like a house on fire, scoring a brace against Middlesbrough - if Grandin had not snatched the ball he would have had a hat trick. Since then, it's been a little patchy. Not quite the same impact as say Shelvey from Liverpool last year. Saying that, he has been getting more pitch time of late and seems to be improving. He needs to increase his goal ratio. What he does do though is interact with the crowd and get them going which is good. Is he a Premiership regular? I think he could benefit from a full Championship season.

3 - The loan deal still has time to run but depending on how he's performed, are you hopeful the club will put in an offer and take him permanently in January, do you think he needs more time to impress, or would you be happy to see the loan cancelled in the New Year?

Would our Chairman stump up money to buy a Premier League striker? I doubt it. I would like to see him stay the full season on loan. I have a feeling he will start racking up some goals as he gets used to things more - which will benefit us as we seek to get back up the table. Likewise it will help you for his return. On that point, again, see Shelvey.

4 - What would you say his strengths and weaknesses have been in the games played for you?

Strengths - good control and works a channel well (he has not been playing down the middle for us) and as I say likes to whip the crowd up. Weakness - should win more in the air (though this has improved) and should get more goals per game.

5 - Have any interesting nicknames and chants been created on the back of his arrival?

Sadly lacking in that department I am afraid. I think we used up our witty quota for the year on Tiago Gomes. Just referred to as 'The Fonz', but I suspect that's nothing new to you that one!

Not convinced he'll make it but I have said over and over, the one thing absolutely in his defence is that he has never been given any sort of run that would lend itself to making an impact - people seem to expect miracles from a player who mostly just gets 15 minutes here and there - so hopefully this is doing him some good.
Sheriff Kimbo
Interesting stuff, nice idea Fieldy. Hope Fonz can kick on, not convinced he is quite prem grade but really hope he is.
The fear
Cheers Mike, i was wondering how things were going for the Fonz, i agree Sheriff way to much is expected when really he has not a full season since he made the step up to the first team, i always thought he had something and could be good for us like that goal against CSKA Moscow what a goal that was, lets hope he gets better and confident then who knows?
CLIVETHEVILLAN
On the one hand I agree Kimbo, he does need a proper run in the team before we can properly judge. But on the other, how many loans does he have to go on before we stop saying "maybe going out on loan would be good for him"? OK he's never had a full season in a first team, maybe that's what he really needs, but he's 22 soon isn't he? I hope he makes it, but Benteke is clearly No 1. Gabby and Weimann are clearly ahead of Delfouneso in the pecking order, and if we sell Bent Lambert will HAVE to buy another striker. The lads just never going to get a run for us is he?

Unlike Albrighton, Nathan possesses loads of natural ability, yet sadly, and this time like Albrighton, I dont believe that he has a long term Villa Park future. Neither have premier league quality, and in Nathan's case, I'm not sure why. Something is definitely lacking, be it heart, determination, drive, ambition, or even maybe attitude? Hopefully he can do well at Blackpool, score some goals, and maybe earn a long term contract at Bloomfield Road. Good Luck to him. I truly believed him to be the real deal when I saw him in action at Bodymoor Heath, some five or six seasons back. Like so many before him though, he has failed to push on and achieve the success story that at one time he looked well capable of achieving.

Agree Kimbo, in many ways for us his chance for a run was under O'Neill and he didn't get it, and he's been struggling since. I honestly think he needs to move to a Champ side, play regularly and rediscover his initial 'buzz' that showed us how clinical he could be infront of goal. Sounds like he'd doing far better at Blackpool than he did at Burnley as well, so at least he is progressing. I'd still love it for him to make it here but I think the Weeman has already more than surpassed him. Andi is clinical, and could be as clinical as Bent is, but he has more of a rounded game than Delboy. If he clocks that at Blackpool he might get a final chance, but I don't see him slipping into obscurity if we let him go, he's too good for that as long as he keeps applying himself.

Did it before JF for a couple, but completely forgot about it as an idea, and it was Clive banging on in the forum and it finally clicked lol So cheers to you Clive!

Lurman, it's only been two loans mate in reality. 2 months at Burnley (7 apps, 4 subs 1 goal), a month at Leicester (4 subs only) and now a full season with the Seasiders (so far 9 apps, 7 subs, 3 goals). To be fair he should've been out for a season far earlier.

Yup agree Glen, we in many ways held him back when he was on the cusp and it's cost him. Does seem Albie might be going the same way with Bannan and Westwood looking good together...his best chance was to adapt to the central role and it hasn't worked sadly. Lambert has some good decisions to make doesn't he, getting rid of Albie and Delboy might not be popular with some, but unless he can get the best from them, we have to look at what's better for all parties even though I think Albie's delivery is second only to Bannan's eye for a pass.

For me, I don't think he's got it to become a decent Premiership striker/player. However, the Championship seems to be about his level. Hope someone signs him in January - Good luck Fonz.
Pride of Lions
If we are going to stick with this formation, we'll need him. We've got 3 strikers on the pitch and only Bowry on the bench.
bodybutter
Think Pride is right for Fonzs sake think it would be better if he moved on same thing for Albrighton which is a huge dissapointment as to the prospect he looked a couple of seasons ago.

Thanks for your view Simon :)
