'If It's Football, It's Vital'

It's All About Bent Tonight

Following the earlier guff about Darren Bent storming out, coupled with the genuine curiosity as to why he didn't make the bench tonight, Paul Lambert was asked an obvious question.

In quotes carried by Sky Sports following the game, Lambert insisted that Bent has a future at the club and was still in his plans, but simply Bent had to earn his involvement like everybody else.

'He just has to play well and train well, that's a simple one. I'm not going to break something or reinvent the wheel. That is something that football people understand. He just has to play well and at the end of the day, it's always my decision. I need everyone at the football club to perform and try and do well.'

Can't see that squashing the rumours myself, although it does once again point to Lambert wanting more rounded play from Darren, but he is a finisher foremost, and surely you have a player like that on the bench for unforeseen eventualities, even if Jordan Bowery has trained hard enough to deserve the bench spot. Have both?

Can play well while sitting in the stand in a suit

More quotes as carried elsewhere:

"Darren was in the squad, it was the same on Saturday. I just picked the same group. I do what think is best for Aston Villa.

"But honestly, I don't have a problem with Darren Bent and I do rate him as a player.

"I've no problem with his attitude in training, none whatsoever.

"Did he storm off? No, not a thing. I would tell you. I thought he was fine. I read the team out. The most important thing is Aston Villa.

"Will I listen to offers in January? Honestly my main concern is winning games for this club, nothing else.

"Can Bent play again for us? Yes, never rule anything out. But I pick a team to win, I never pick one I think will lose."

problem for bent is at the moment we have been playing well without him excluding the city debacle and the last time bent & teke played together was the saints game !!
marshyboy87
Wouldn't explain how Bowery can make the bench instead of him though, Marshyboy.
VillaHippo
So it was Bent & Benteke who let in all the goals against Southampton then marshyboy?.......... Hope you're not trying to tell me Gabby carries a bigger goal threat than DB9........? Lol is coming out with the same quotes as he didwirh Mutton at the start of the season ie I have no problem with him etc. I'm not asking Lambert to reinvent the wheel, just shake your head and get your brain into gear!!!!!

why even bother running the articles? It's as plain as day that Bent is being forced out. Clearly how much effort you put in at shuttle runs is more important than ability and winning games
AVbornandbred
He's being told that he's not good enough, not forced out. There's no conspiracy theories here. Just that PL has seen him in training and in matches and doesn't rate him. I concur. Collymore thinks the same as did Redknapp and many more. Some will rave about his goal ratio but as I pointed out the other day, balaban has the same ratio for country and you've got to think that his service would've been nowhere near as good as Bencht's.

AdzVilla11 - He hasn`t played well for a long time now. And obviously isn`t putting in a great deal of effort in training either by the sounds of it. He isn`t working in our side, im sure he will go to a better team and score many goals. But let that other team pay his wages and not us, because he isn`t all that in a villa shirt.

Think its all about tactics and personnel Bent had the supply of Young,Downing etc that suited his game we do not have those type of players available any longer so Lambert has adjusted the tactics and Bent no longer fits in. The other strikers do because their games are more about team play rather than individual skill at puttiing the ball in the net. Should we acquire another Young then PL might well adjust the tactics to include Bent. Horses for courses as they say. With Young,Downing Bent in the team you could quite easily see Villa scoring 4-5 in a game now I doubt we would score 3 in any game no complaints the change in playing staff will take time to knit together wont happen overnight.I would point out that we have sold the jewels and are now on a lower budget but what did we win with the jewels ?
Merlin128777
we've been playing well? I look at the results and the league position. Doesn't look that good to me. Maybe I'm looking from the wrong angle?
vitalfootballadmin
Find myself agreeing with merlin and his "magical words"
fatloser
Hear what you are saying bikini but just wished Lambert could have whipped him in shape as I still think he could have scored a lot of goals for us. I rate PL though and will back him whatever he does because he sees everything and if Bent isn't pulling his weight off the field or have the right attitude then fine go and find a better cheaper player like he did with Benteke. Shame but not the biggest loss if we replace him with a younger hungrier future talent
