More Bent Nonsense It Seems

Whatever may or may not be going on with Darren Bent and his future at the club, it seems reliable claims that he stormed out of Villa Park are as accurate as ever, I wonder if Leveson fancies looking at sports journalism?

Contrary to the original report by Talksport, and then jumped on over the last hour by online media outlets, if Bent 'actually' stormed anywhere it appears it was to an executive box - so not quite the storm they'd have liked to have painted.

But hey while we are making things up, should I posit that maybe the club have employed a Darren Bent look-a-like to appear on camera post this apparent 'storming'.

More recent reports covering this suggest he stormed off before returning just before kick off, which is convenient isn't it.

I wonder if any of our players 'threw' the kick it out t-shirts to the ground in disgust today as well.

Oh well, we can put that one to bed but hopefully both the player and the club will clear it up so it doesn't become another 'fact' that festers amongst the fans.

What will continue to confuse and concern many fans though is Bent's continued lack of involvement in the team. If Paul Lambert believes our starting threesome offer more as a unit than involving Bent that's fair enough, but Bent is a threat so it makes sense to many that he'd be there to have an impact if the game reaches a point where a snatched goal would deliver a reward?

I've got to say, the rumours about an appearance clause in his contract close to being triggered seem the only reason why he keeps getting excluded from the squad. Seems like PL doesn't rate him enough for the future, so he'll keep him away from the team and sell him off in January.

And they are just that, rumours that affect a different player every season Hippo. Any appearance bonus wouldn't explain why Bent has been used as a sub, nor would any appearance bonus be more than any installment we are required to pay as the basic transfer fee. Lambert clearly sees us offered more with more workman strikers which I tend to agree with, but I'd still have him on the bench as an option which is where my confusion comes from, but to suggest a basic fee of £18 rising to £24 with clauses, that 'part' of a 6m, quite possibly a daft million for hitting a number of appearances is the reason doesn't wash. It's not a big enough sum to care about when you consider the sums involved in final league placings.

Biggest thing to say is though if Bent does depart, then we crucially need another option to challenge the starting three tonight, and somebody that will fit perfectly with whatever Lambert doesn't seem to think he can get from Bent.

Benteke is a far more effective centre forward than Bent, and I'm not sure they can play together. Lambert knows best.

mike_field - IF, and thats a big if, the appearance fee rumour was true, what would be the point in having Bent as a sub, if you knew you wouldn't use him during the match? That'd be like going out with 6 subs. That's the only reason why I believe Bowery could be selected ahead of him - would you really believe its based on ability? If the figure was £6 mill then that's a huge amount of money for a couple more appearances if, inevitably, Bent is sold in January. Especially considering a similar figure was paid for Benteke's whole transfer fee. Even if the figure was as low as £2 mill I'd understand the decision.

I have had a google at this without much success - if to be believed, DBs contract is until summer 2015 fact fans, at £70-80K a week, and the fee £18m with £6m "add-ons" (Tottenham also had a sell on clause of 10 per cent, but presumably Sunderland had to find that from their wedge...) "Add-ons" can surely only mean appearances...and/or goals perhaps. His deal from Tottenham to Sunderland was similar - £10m + £6.5m. here is the interesting quote (D Mail): "Quinn has secured a deal worth £24m if Villa stay up, Bent continues to play for England and the striker keeps scoring at his present rate." So the good news is - if we go down we save £6m.

btw I only saw 2nd half today but we were mostly rubbish and lucky for once - play like that in the next two games we will be lucky to get points. Bringing on Ireland was the key decision, as for me, KEA and Holman are not the full biscuit, so - WHY ISNT IRELAND STARTING

Hippo, but when not starting his only spell not on the bench has following injury, and Lambert has already shown he'll pick on merit, so maybe he feels Bowery deserves to be their and Bent should redouble in training? I don't know, because as said it seems weird to me as well, but if it was appearance based, why was he on the bench and used? Just doesn't tally.

Clause payments would be appearances, what the club achieved ie Europe or Champs League, Domestic Cup runs, number of goals scored in the league, possible England fixture because of the upturn in value that would create and so on. 6m on clauses only isn't a huge amount and would be split between a number of things, also including a clause for a flat fee on any future sale over a certain figure. It would all go to 'rising to 24m' it wouldn't just be appearances and straight appearances would be the lowest boost to his current value. As Mala said, future clauses are based on Villa securing funding which an appearance doesn't have much sway in. Note the quote, Villa stay up, continues to play for England AND keep scoring at current rate, they are all more important than whether he plays every game achieving little lol

How the hell Gabby can start ahead of a fit again DB9 is utterly beyond me. To not be on the bench is a total insult IMHO.

Yeah its useless unless we knew the actual facts of the matter! I do agree though PoL, it's completely baffling. I agree with you mike and I agree with PL when he says the squad is picked on merit. I still do not think though that an in-form Bowery (former Chesterfield 21 year old with 4 goals in 60+ games) could be better in training that a not-in-form England regular before he got injured towards the end of last season?

Gabby played really well, against both Arses and Reading. Probably not a natural striker, and being played on the wings isn't helping him, but covers every blade ofrass, never gives up and still pretty quick. As for comparing Bent and Benteke, they're chalk and cheese. DB9 would never have scored the goal that CB20 got, but he might have been on the end of a couple of those whipped in corners. Would be great if we could accommodate them both for a long enough run of games to see if they could play as a pair. As for these stories, typical Talksport - I remember them announcing we'd signed Kevin Prince Boateng. They are idiots, especially that retarded 'Mousse' - all from the Daily Mirror school of journalism ("team X needs a striker, striker Z hasn't got a club, let's announce it as a done deal").

A right place right time tap ins, 40 odd percent penalties in his mythical stats, lazy attitude and no team ethic 28 yr old mercenary versus a strong, quick, technically proficient and sharp thinking forward (and he's only 21 and learning his trade in the Premier League) ????? ........... no comment. £75k a week = two quality hard working players in a team of team players. ..................... as for Jordan Bowery the correct stats are 2009-10 when he was first started as a kid 1 goal in 14 games, 2010-11 3 goals in 31 games, 2011-12 12 goals in 48 games, 2012-13 1 goal in 3 games. He is a kid just turned 21 who has been plying his trade in the lower divisions and is one to develop over the next couple of years, which if you watch our reserves much you will see he has what it takes.
