Lambert - Immense Pride Despite Result

Paul Lambert can't fault the players despite us going down 3-2 to an ever predictable 12 man Man United team.

Speaking to the Official Site and obviously choosing his words more carefully about the 'prat' (source BFR) in charge of the game, Lambert said:

'I am proud, I thought they were outstanding. I couldn't ask for anymore, but that's why Manchester United are a top side, they do it week in week out. I am really proud with what they have given me. I think we've been playing well for a couple of weeks, hopefully the confidence will be there in abundance after that.'

Absolutely agree, that performance and how close we pushed the Mancs should give everybody a boost, the secret now though is to put in that type of performance against everybody and not just raise ourselves for the big games.

Lambert added that he believes the crowd are a good gauge on how well the team are doing, and he couldn't fault the fans for their backing today, which makes the result even more annoying:

'They are a young side but they are playing really well, they kept on going, I couldn't fault them, I am absolutely gutted to lose because they gave me everything they had. The crowd are your gauge.'

As for individuals being picked, it's no surprise following that performance.

Andi Weimann:

'One thing about Andreas is he's a natural finisher. Andi is a goalscorer, he's a young lad but he seems to have been around for years. The future is very good.'

Christian Benteke:

'Benteke was incredible for the build up. He was outstanding.'

Enda Stevens making his first starting debut in the league:

'Enda was terrific. He was up against Valencia who was by no means a slouch. Enda gave me absolutely everything, as they all did.'

Man U Forum Thread.

Well we certainly deserved the point and with better refereeing we would have secured that, but there are more positives to take out of the game so it seems pointless to concentrate on what went against us. Focus on what went for us, further signs of improvement in our overall play and in our defensive play, and the balance of the squad is better in the 433 formation than it has been before.

We haven't turned the corner yet, but the signs are there that we soon will.

The confidence boost from the performance has to be built on and taken into our upcoming games.

Very proud of the players today, keep it up lads.

Key thing is at various points of the game you could've singled out everyone who started the game for praise. Lowton wasn't too shabby against Young, Clark and Vlaar were immense against their frontline etc...just need it to click like that more often now.

is it just because we love the villa we don't think the ref gave us anything? I dunno i thought we were done harshly personally - man u defo got the rub of the green on the 50/50s.

Well I doubt it's Villa goggles, Ireland barely touched Scholes when he went down like a two dollar cough because he misplaced his pass, their winner was never a freekick either. Towards the end, their player handballs and somehow they get the freekick? It's the same ref's making the same mistakes especially when certain teams are involved. It's not all coincidence.

Totally agree about the ref. From where I was sitting, he gave some strange decisions. But more disappointing was our crowd. Yup, in great voice at 2 - 0 but when they scored what happened to the Holte? The players turned up but the crowd let them down. Third goal went in and the stream was for the exits. Very proud of the team but the fans? Sorry but this was not a fan performance in line with previous years.

Absolutely gutted felt like I was watching a repeat on UK Gold...really did hurt and although we got nothing we can only hope that can give us some much needed confidence, because I thought for long periods in the game our plan, tactics and play was absolutely spot on...there was some extremely good individual performances , but will leave that and praise them all for their application in a game where the majority was a little nervous at the possible outcome...we are getting players starting to find form and belief and they are definately wanting to play for only concern is whether we can knit it all together sooner rather than later as before you know it you are fighting a real uphill battle, although I believe we will finish the season stronger than we started and will strengthen in January... just want to see that type of performance against some of the lesser teams in the league, been too many no shows this season, where if we could put a few performances like this evening it would more than see us through to next season where we can improve further...Up the Villa!!!!!

p.s. I thought Benteke looked superb and every bit an international footballer...Got a real player on our hands here, just hope we get to see him strut his stuff at B6 for a good few years to come...!

It was like watching that cup tie when Tayls put us 2 up only for Fergie to spring Van Nistlrooy off the bench to win it for them in 2002. Play like that evey week and we might win a few games. Am strangely up beat despite the loss.

What a performance. Your only as good as your last game and on this performance we will be fine. We played with pace and confidence, passion and pride. Yeah ok, I nearly lost my voice screaming to slow the game down when we were 2-0 up because keeping that pace up was only going to benefit them as the game went on but that's by the by at this point. The progress were making as individuals players and as a team is obvious, I am disappointed we lost but excited for the future, and not the distant future either. Up The Villa!

Great performance, the comeback was inevitable, Ferguson sold his soul to the Devil years ago and they really have a thing for breaking Villa hearts. Onwards and upwards, I've never been so positive after a defeat.

Green Villa: This is a discussion board and views other than yours are allowed without us going to support other teams we hate. The point is that in days gone by an away goal led to an increase in fan support to urge the team on. Yesterday, the Holte and others went silent when they were needed the most. Once the game is on the job of fans is to support. The players gave their all. Just as an afetr thought, Benteke was brilliant but still needs to add goals to his game. Please, please please don't let's project him to a place he has not yet earned. Weimann was the goal scorer and whilst Benteke had a great game, it was Weimann who delivered this week, and almost did last week too.

Gordon, Benteke hasn't been brought in just for goals, he has been brought in to create and hold up the ball too ........... which he's doing. UTV

Gordon..Can't agree with you about the crowd. Certainly where we were they maintained their support throughout. I thought the atmosphere was brilliant. I just want to see a home win please! Although a season ticket holder I missed the Fulham and Swansea game for a holiday and wedding. The last home leauge win I saw was v Norwich 5/11/2011..over a year ago! Point against Citeh and 3 v Arsenal please!!!!

krfeskvilla: I was in the trinity and from there the Holte as a whole went quiet. Yes there were pockets of fans trying to lift the players but I almost lost my voice trying to get others to support the team. astonmilan: I agree he has not been bought just for goals. My point is that I fear he is being put on a pedastal by some before he really deserves to be there. Yes great performance but the whole game isn't there yet. Bargain for 7m though. How much was Harewood? Just a thought, I've not seen Bowery play but he looked impressive in the warm up.

Do not think I have been that proud of a losing performance in 3 years Lambert sent them out to win that game and I thought the whole team were magnificent, not going to go on about the ref. or Utd getting the rub of the green because Van Persie had two rockets either of which could have gone in instead of hitting the bar. Just a great performance if they reach that level in every game we will have nothing to worry about this season.
