Clark Wins Praise From Former Players

Both Alan McInally and Steve Staunton have heaped praise on Ciaran Clark and they think he's going to develop into a 'first class' centre half for the club.

Speaking to the Official Site McInally opened the praise by saying:

'I'm a massive fan of Ciaran. He played in a host of positions, now he's looking comfortable. He's been first class this season, he's still young and I think he's a wonderful footballer who will only get better. He will score goals too, I'd be disappointed if he can't find five or six this season, I think that much of him.'

Staunton followed with:

'When you're young and coming up, you sometimes don't play your normal position. That's been the case with Ciaran but I think he's developing now into a centre back. He and Ron Vlaar seem to be developing a nice partnership. Ron looks a big, strong and quick boy who covers well and is aggressive in the air. Things are looking good but it will take time.'

I think Stan's final comment about it taking time is the key one here. We clearly have a good core of players who could develop very handsomely for us for the years ahead but the concern is will they develop quickly enough for this season not to be the roller coaster we all expect it to be, so we can build from a happier position next summer.

Clark is one of many who that applies to it and fans are split on what the final story will be on that score. The team and the individuals are showing progress as each game passes so you have to hope it clicks fully by mid October/November so we can enjoy an end of season run in with breathing space from the drop.

Yep, he's still young and developing but the signs are looking good.

I agree, I think he'll be a top player, it just worries me how many mistakes of his will lead to us conceding goals whilst he continues to grow. Though I guess that is part and parcel of nurturing a young talented player, probably why MON let go of Cahill!

You have to accept young guys will make a mistake the key is to ensure they stamp those mistakes out of their game thats where Dunne falls apart he still makes mistakes on the reg...

Haha that is true, I'll have a couple of Clark mistakes a match over a couple of Dunne's own goals a match any day!
