Lambert On Captain Colossal

Lambert On Captain Colossal

Paul Lambert has said he made the captaincy change because of Roncrete's natural leadership abilities, it wasn't a reflection on the job Benty's had been doing.

Speaking to the Official Site the gaffer explained.

'Ron was amazing. When he took the ball on the run for 40 yeards? I told him, I pay him to defend, don't even do it! But I thought he was colossal. He and Ciaran and the two full backs were excellent. In terms of the decision, I just wanted to give Darren a break to concentrate on scoring. At Newcastle and against Swansea he has been excellent.'

Fair comments really. Vlaar is the natural captain in the side both in terms of his attitude but also in his play, and fair for Bent to get some praise as well as his workrate is much improved on last season and he's certainly putting the effort in.

" I pay him to defend".......wish that were true. If he were really running the finances I think things would be tighter than Top Cat's tipping strategy. I want PL to renegotiate my mortgage.

Lambert has turned up, brought his own signings and got rid/froze out the old. He couldn't just drop Bent immediately though as Lerner has invested so much and thinks very highly of him,( judging from the first few training sessions when DB9 first turned up anyway. )He isn't multi-talented enough to be in a top squad and this is just the start of him being edged out. I know PL said that he wants Vlaar to concentrate on defending but he doesn't want him to stand on the edge of his own area for 90 mins. At the other end of the scale, he doesn't want Bent to just sit at the edge of the oppositions 6 yard box and poach. Sadly, that's all he can do.

I regret that some Villa fans seem unable to accept that players go through 'bad patches', although history says that most of them do - and especially strikers. Why do we feel the need to attack our own? DB is putting in the effort and is bringing others into play (Christian Benteke is flavour of the month but should probably have scored off DB's assist on Saturday). Everyone says PL is getting everything right - but that doesn't seem to extend to his decision to play Bent, or his stated opinion, that he played excellently against Newcastle and Swansea. We fans expect absolute loyalty from Villa players - look at the reaction if they want a move - but doesn't that mean we have to show some loyalty to them in return?

Never rated him Bob, no loss of loyalty here...Some will say that he kept us up last year?!?!? Some say it was Robbie Keane, some say it was Shay, three teams being worse than us (if that's possible!!) There's a million different things that kept us up, not 1 person. He offers absolutely nothing other than goal hanging. People always take it personally when someone has a go at him. Why?? When he's gone he won't care for us, he's a mercenary only bothered about himself. I've been moaning about the way the whole team has to put him as the centre of the universe for him to be effective for some time (well before Benteke turned up.) This detracts severely from their abilities to maybe play to their best. Lambert knows this and therefore Bent is useless because he won't carry someone who is just going to take all the glory by getting the final touch every time when everyone else is capable of scoring aswell as doing a job for the team. I regret that SOME Villa fans seem unable to see the wood for the trees. This is NOT a bad patch, this is proper football, a team game, not everyone working their arses off to pass it to someone who is perched on the edge of the 6 yard box.

Vill444 are you really Prep lol, Bent will get goals he has been leading the line on his own literally, now Big Ben is here he will take some of the burden of his shoulders like he did saturday, Benteke and Bent may well be a formidable partnership me thinks UTV! Vlaar is class what a great signing he was and for the money £3million pfff we paid £9 million for Curtis Davies lol unreal, Lambert is the Messiah here to resurect Villa!

Vlaar is a great captain, he has a phenomenal work rate and his command of the back four is spot on.

Sorry what?!?! I'm confused... What should Bent be doing? Should he be playing the 30 yard pin point passes from midfield? Or should he be the hard tackling enforcer? Maybe give him some gloves? Because sitting in front of the goal and scoring seems to be unacceptable now... The guy is on a bit of a goal drought and now the daggers come out. At the beginning of this season he was averaging 1 goal every 2 games for us. Do you realise how good that is!

444, Did DB9 steal your sweets at school? Nobody should be bothered if he knocks them in from half-an-inch out or gets em' from Maradona Mexico 86 type dribbles-through-the defence. They all count. Yes, the role of the striker has evolved but -- and we've had this debate before -- Klose for Germany and a few others are 'goal hanging' strikers that are used and valued by creative football teams. We don't know how Lambert views DB9. The name Darren Bent will never be mentioned alongside Gerd Mueller, Alan Shearer or Didier Drogba. But he's still an effective forward. Brendan Rodgers would probably do anything to have Bent or someone comparable at L'Pool right now.

are you watching the games 444 or just reading the linescore? DB9 made a a few superb services in the box last game, not to mention the attention he draws from the opposing defenders allows other the needed space to work. My fear is that fans with questionable soccer knowledge raise a big enough stink and cause DB9 to feel the pressure to fill the net, than start forcing shots instead of continuing to select the best option. IMO, Bent is not getting enough credit for his work rate.

Do you want to play as the likes of Eck did gents?? Lambert and his way of playing is the future. We don't need a poacher as we'll have many different formations and attacking styles. Bent only works with 1 of these as he's 1 dimensional. We will get goals from all areas of the team and we don't need someone who offers nothing other than goalhanging when we can have 11 multi talented instead of 10. Nothing personal with Bent, I just don't rate him and don't understand the adulation when he's never earnt it from us fans. Astriel 1 goal in 2 games is great BUT NOT IF IT STOPS EVERYONE ELSE SCORING. How many did he assist, how many games did we win with him scoring. That's the stats that you want to look at. The whole team lives to pass him the ball in the 6 yard box and it's so easy to play against.
