Can someone please explain the "Eligible youngster" thing? What's the point in the 25 man squad if we can still have another 40+ players on top. I notice Weimann and Baker are not in 25 but are eligible youngsters. Confused!

Have to be 21 or under when the season starts from memory - there's a specific date. Anybody under that age is eligible as a youngster to play during the season, despite not being named in the 25 man squad. The 25 man cap has to include 8 homegrown players, it's designed to give youth a chance and stop clubs filling up with foreigners basically.

Helps you understand how the wage bill at a football club is so high.I know the youngsters arent all on big money but if you add the staff its a lot of mouths to feed.

MF, I think 'homegrown' also includes foreign nationals who have learned their trade in England at an English club!?!?

I am on the same lines as Adam Deuce. It seems downright stupid/silly - however you want to dress it to have Mutton, Warnock and (with all due repect) Stan, in a squad of 25, when you haven't got the likes of Nathan Baker and Andreas Weimann in the squad - even though they've both played this season already is beyond me! With Samir Carruthers too! What exactly are the chances of Mutton, Warnock or Stan playing this season?, well it's plain stupid to me....sorry!

Yup, think 3 years Villa for homegrown element.

Was mainly for British youngsters to figure more instead of the influx from abroad the help the national team, but had to have the caveat on homegrown for players from abroad who were already in the Academy setups/could go for duel citizenship etc.

PoL, Baker, Weimann, Carruthers don't have to be named as they qualify for being under 21.

POL they can still play so it isn't like Hutton, Warnock and Stan are named instead of other over aged players who "we" would prefer in the squad and eligible to play.

Players under 21 do not have to be registered but are eligible to play any and every game they do not need to be register... Therefore placing Baker on the squad list is a waste of a spot in the 25man squad because he is eligible to play without being registered... I dont get what is so difficult to understand about the system Eligible only means one thing :) The home grown thing is essentially where the player has trained either at the club or in the nation for 3 years or more before the age of 21... Cesc Fabregas is Home Grown in England because he trained with Arsenal for 3+ years before the age of 21... Now the 25 man squad may seem stupid but if England ever want to compete with the likes of Spain, Germany, Holland etc. measures like these are very necessary but it wont guarantee success... the EPL needs to go a step further and do what Spain does and only allow three player who are non-Euro nationals to be registered...

more importantly - I count 8 in the youngsters who have already played / will probably feature / are "up to it". This is good because even if you discount Stan Mutton and Wonky, we have a working squad of 30 players which is more than I remember since before the dark days of ONeill.....:) About 4-5 more I think.
