Lambert Pleased With Gabster Return

Paul Lambert welcomed Gabby Agbonlahor back to the team against Newcastle, and he couldn't have been more delighted.

Speaking on a blog piece on the Official Site the gaffer said:

'Gabby coming back in a major plus. You're not going to catch him if he gets a run at you, that's for sure. It was a big bonus to have him back, I thought he was excellent, his speed in incredible.'

Over the past few seasons it's fair to say we have seen the worse of Gabby, injuries didn't help, but the hands on hips attitude annoyed even the most fervent of his supporters. Against Newcastle however he was back to his best, and we saw that.

Afterall, how many of us wished he'd carried on into the box himself instead of passing to Bent when he picked the ball up in our own half and waltzed past two Newcastle players like they weren't there?

Give me that Gabby every day of the week and twice on matchdays!

Matthew Lowton probably sums him up at his best:

'I think it was Chicago, he hit the ball past a defender and chased it down. The defender looked like he was going in reverse.'

If he's going to score any goals for us this season, hurry up and get him in the team somewhere, before it's November...pleaseeee.... Lol

be interesting to see how PL uses Gabby
leftfoot
I think the decision to use Gabby will be based on how Lambert approaches the game.. Slow defences, impact sub, chasing a game and on the wing when we lack penetration or directness...

Gabby used as a left/right forward as part of a flexible 433 along with bent in the centre and either benteke or zog on the other side? Easy to switch to a 442 from this formation. Could see this happening a fair bit.

Or even 533 to 451 if its gabby and zog
AHAVFC
433 sorry not 533

533 might give us a chance.

I am predicting a lot of rotation this year. We will see a the Gabby/Bent, Bent/Benteke, and Gabby/Benteke partnership with Bowery as a sub and occasional starter.

With stats like Bowrey has, I'd have thought he'd be in the reserves more soccer15, think Weimann will feature on the bench. A lot of people knock Gabbi, but I'm a fan. For all his limitations, he gives 100%, cares about the club and has great pace. I genuinely think he could be the first Villa striker since the 50's to reach 100 goals for the club given his age. In my eyes that would make him a legend.

Wow, it's 06:30 in the morning and I was about to moan about opo-ups and auto-play news clips but then I checked myself and realised that this site is one of the best free things in life. So before I go to work, I had to comment on the MoTD clip of the Villa v Newcastle. Yes I watched the match in full too but I am so excited by the prospect of watching Gabby link up with Bent/eke in the coming season that I cannot help but smile. IF PL can maintain the higher level of understanding and thinking imposed on and withdrawn from the players then I truly believe that staying up will be no problem. For instance, Gabbys run and assist in Bents blocked shot will evolve into a run on to a shot for himself at some point and, perhaps, with some finishing work done, we will see some goals like he scored when Cashley used to assist him. Bent/eke can only flourish under a midfield getting used to standing up and nicking the ball rather than one man watching another diving in, missing and then watching the heels of the opposition player run unchallenged into the final third of our half unchallenged. NOW, we hunt in packs and when we get it back, we play one-two's and triangles. Who'd have thunk it after the last two seasons dross? Now we have a style: pass, probe, hunt as a pack, interchange positions....then we have altering formations. When was the last time you saw a diamond from the Villa? Yep, not in recent memory. This is going to be a good transition, then a great one. We'll get spanked along the way. We may have to sit through another Man City exit in the Cup but this time we at least know there's progression along side an exit, not just a bending over class. UTV, off to work.

Good points well made koolbill.

I've said it a million times. I get fed up of people knocking his goal record when Gabs has been played out of position on the left wing or left midfield for what seems like forever. Play him up front in a 4-4-4-2 or a compact 4-3-3 and you'll see his best.
