Competition Will Be Key This Season

Brad Guzan believes that competition will be key this season as Paul Lambert picks players on merit, and not just based on their name.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Guzan talked about the competition that was now in place at the club, which also saw him replace Shay Given between the sticks after a few below par performances.

'The manager names his team an hour before kick off so that's when I knew. We know that in terms of working hard in training everyone wants an opportunity. The work we do on the training ground among myself, Shay, Andy Marshall and the younger goalkeepers, we know it's an environment where you have to put your best foot forward. When you have competitiveness in training that creates a good atmosphere for the team. I think that's what the manager has done and it's only going to help us and make us better.'

Many fans raised their eyebrows when Given was brought straight back into the team following injury, despite Guzan's own form at the point under he who blames everybody else, so Lambert showing he will select the team on merit, and not on names, surely has to be a good thing and will help remove the malaise that some players have shown for - oh three plus years - knowing they'll be selected come what may.

Many of them have already left, those who remain surely have to know anything but their best will see them on their butts now.

And that is something I can only applaud.

Not only was dropping Shay the right thing to do, and let's face it he'll bounce back as he's quality, it was also a hell of a message to every other member on the playing staff.

Absolutely right Mike. No-one can rest on their laurels now, a coupe of good games doesn't mean you're selected for the rest of the season. I really do applaud PL on his stance.... it is the only way to move forward...select the team on merit. Excellent!

Picking players on merit has to be the right thing to do. We have gone years with too many players being in the comfort zone knowing that they will play regardless of previous performances. Shay will bounce back from this, and the message that it sends to the whole squad cannot be underestimated!

PL hasn't put a foot wrong yet... Particularly liked his interview answer on MOD as to why he picked Guzan over Given. "I just thought it was in the best interest of the football club" No waffle, I made the decision that is it!

i like Shay Given but the Euros did his head in and its up to him to recover. Very happy to see Guzan in goal and he justified his selection and more. Nothing like competition within the squad to produce a better team.

this is really great news! as you have all said, its great for all the playing staff, but i am most encoraged by how this is going to go down with the young villa players from the last few years. Last season, the seaosn before they knew that the big names were going to be chosen no matter what and it didnt matter what they did in training or when coming on as a sub. Now albie, bannan, herd, clarke, lichaj, baker etc will all know that if they perform, they will get a fair crack. This competition is really going to get everyone training harder & playing harder and it can only be good for the club and players! for those not wanting to accept that they are not first choice players, and dont ahve the right attitude, they know what will happen to them...
