Lambert Delays Goalkeeper Decision

Paul Lambert has said he will pick the goalkeeper for the game against Newcastle on the day, after Guzan's performance gave him food for thought.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail ahead of the clash, Lambert knows he has a decision to make following Given's poor performance against Everton, and Guzan's steady performance against Tranmere.

'When a keeper makes a mistake it's highlighted, it can happen. It's not a comment on how good a keeper Shay Given is because Shay's a brilliant keeper. Brad's been working on a few things, whichever plays, I trust them to go and do it. Footballers like honesty from decisions, I do that in an honest way, whichever team I pick for Sunday, I'm doing it for the best reasons.'

Bet it will be given!
The Fear
reckon you could be right Fear but we could well see a change if Given makes any more mistakes.

Given at Newcastle?.... nailed on I'd say.... he'll get a welcome from the toon army.
Pride of Lions
Guzan all the way as i think givern is *****e too many mistakes cannot xontroll the box
Ted 369
Ah, thats a bit harsh there Ted.
Madirish
Agree with Ted. Given does not look Sharp. New era new keeper. He came with McLeish. Enough said.
Villa_Grizzly
Perhaps that was a bit harsh. I do like Shay but time for Brad Guzan to get a run.
Villa_Grizzly
Everyone expects us to lose, give Guzan a go and see if he plays a blinder; if not Given can come back and Guzan's had a crack at the whip. It's a no-lose situation.

He's made one mistake in game two, any decent manager would put Given in and back him. That's his one mistake though, make another one in the near future then Guzan is in and it's up to him to keep the gloves. You can't axe Given from one mistake, you need to put your arm around him and back him, especially this early in the season.
AdzVilla11
He was pretty ropey in the Euro's too. Not sure a break would hurt him tbh.

Unbeaten under brad this season,no brainer! I don't expect any thing at Newcastle but a loss for shay between the sticks at his old club will do his confidence no good at all! Guzan for me!
brisbane lion
got to be Guzan. 2 of those goals against everton my grandma would have saved.
leftfoot
Guzan definitely - the guy deserves a chance and he will be so motivated to keep a clean sheet. Shay needs a break.
WentToRotterdam
I say we wait till Man city in the carling cup and see what guzan can do against quality opposition before throwing him in a premier league game.

Given's lack of ability to command his box, and therefore his defence, is a liability at times. Good shot stopper, but very average in other areas including distribution. There is a reason we conceeded more goals than any other team from WITHIN the 6 yard box last season. The reason is that we had a goalkeeper who wouldn't come and claim a thing. It is simple. 10 balls delivered into the box that are claimed by the goalkeeper means no goals conceeded. 10 balls in the box that lead to shots on goal where Given makes 5 world class saves, but the other 5 go in the net means we are in trouble. The sad thing is that there are fans on here who defend that type of goalkeeping and say 'look at the 5 great saves'. Where as anybody with a brain says that they were saves he wouldn't have to make if he commanded his box and his defence. Guzan in goal for me all day long.
