Word On The Tweet - Crewe Captain Now Linked?

Sky Sports understands Aston Villa close to signing Ashley Westwood from Crewe, going for medical now. Fee agreed. #AVFC

Timothy Abraham ‏@TimothyAbraham
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Mauro Zarate and Wilfried Bony seem like deadline day red herrings. #AVFC making headway with Christian Benteke.

Mat Kendrick ‏@MatKendrick
Just to update on the Christian Benteke situation, it seems Villa have been given encouragement by Genk that a deal can be done #avfc

Timothy Abraham ‏@TimothyAbraham
As things stand...Not a single one of Villa's signings during this window had played in the Premier League before they joined. A problem?

'@petecolley: Villa in talks with Crewe over midfielder Ashley Westwood...... Presumably Dale Stevens deal going cold!'

Another League One #AVFC import (according to @John__Percy ) - Crewe Alex captain @ARWesty04 looks to be midfield signing on the cards.

See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Westwood

He made his Crewe debut on 28 March 2009, coming on as a second half substitute in the Football League One clash with Millwall at Gresty Road, which ended in a 1-0 defeat. In December 2009, the player, following a string of impressive performances, signed a contract tying him to the club until 2012. Despite previously only playing 22 minutes of first team football in the 08-09 season, Westwood was named Crewe's player of the year for the 2009-2010 season.[2] The campaign saw the midfielder score six goals in 36 league appearances. Speaking of the player's success, Crewe assistant manager Steve Davis commented: 'He's a local lad and he's come from nowhere. People didn't really know much about him because he wasn't one of the young rising stars, but over the last 18 months he's kicked on and shown what he can do.'

On 17 November 2010, Westwood signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2014

i see robbie savage is commenting on the deadline day transfers... what a complete t1t that fella is...

None of the players we have signed are from any other premiership club... Weird, lets hope it goes as planned..
alcoollie
no experience all youth players fantastic
Ted 369
I would class Vlaar as experienced enough, he is 27 and has come from good clubs.. Just no premiership experience... I think he is gonna be a Top buy for us
alcoollie
This is becoming a joke!...........
Pride of Lions
Seeing the likes of Charlie Adam, Berbatov, Adam Johnson, Dawson etc going to our rivals whilst we bolster the youth team is starting to get worrying tbh.
SchoolBoyError
How many of Newcastle's fantastic new team had you heard of before they were signed.......
AntonVilla
Agreed Schoolboyerror. What worries me is many clubs around us have strengthened with very strong players at a low price. While I will judge the players once they play I am just shocked that despite the massive cutting of wages we have done that we can't afford these top players. Particularly considering that we were one of the top 20 most valuable clubs in the world... And AntonVilla - how many of those signings were done by PL? It is like saying how many fantastic new players has SAF found for Man U? We aren't Newcastle or Man U. We have little to no history of unearthing the next rooney/ronaldo etc...
Astriel
Lambert saying his decision alone to concentrate on bringing in unknown youngsters - "they're hungry and who said they not good enough". lets hope he knows his onions from his plums. Brave & Dangerous strategy ?????????
HolyT
Lets be fair lads Westwood has been linked with Jol at Fulham all week with fulham keen on his services aong with a few other clubs so he has something? Lambert is bilding for the future lets see how we play sunday and were we are after 10 games then we will have an idea ow things are going
clivethevillan
Worried at the lack of experience and winning mentality. Just 1 or 2 with history of winning things and the know how would make all the difference in the world. They can't rely on Lambert from the sidelines constantly. Worried also that these players are all top dogs at their respective clubs. They may look good playing with fellow 3rd tier players but when you put them in the big pond with the other big fish, it's a big jump (especially if there's several at the same time. Speaking from personal experience.
Villan444
I guess the problem we have is that if 1/2 of these young players are premiership quality then we will still be short of quality players... We are in the position where almost every one of these unknowns have to work...
Astriel
And Astriel.... Pardew or Hughton, who bought in these players at Newcastle, did they have a history of unearthing the next Rooney or Ronaldo? I must have missed that....(which is sort of why I used Newcastle as an example and not SAF at Man U)
