Managers reaction: Lambert Pleased With Cup Progress

Deano says the Cup is now a joke: Worried About The Attendance? Don't Be!

Stephen Ireland was delighted to see Villa gain their first competitive win of the season last night against Tranmere, but knows we have to push on from that against Newcastle. Speaking to the Official Site Ireland said Villa needed to use that result, and the way we played, as a benchmark for how we approach the rest of the season. Quotes: That's Just What We Needed - Ireland

Enda Stevens has said he is hoping to give Paul Lambert a selection headache as rumours persist of us signing a new left back. Following his competitive start for Villa against Tranmere, Stevens told the Official Site he was looking for more pitch time now so he can really push on. Well, got to say, I`m worried and slightly uninspired by this transfer window. I thought with a new manager and the fact we`ve flirted with relegation for two seasons in a row, that we`d have £20m or more to spend. I think Paul Lambert was the right, sensible choice as manager, but the guy isn`t a miracle worker. Have Villa really forgotten, or do they not realise, that we need some experience in the team? Paul Brown: Stephen Ireland believes he's the man to feed Darren Bent - because he's a risk-taker. Midfield ace Ireland is confident he can provide the 'penetration' for Villa as they search a cutting-edge in the final third. Ireland says he's not in the side to provide 'safe passes' but to play in the likes of Bent. Preview: www.avfc.co.uk

A few years ago there were, apparently, two types of posters on VV; The positive and the negative. It's never that simple but those times seem to have returned. For those Posi's who think the Negi's are 'moaners' Newcastle will be the acid test. Nobody expects Lambo to work miracles in less than a season. However, there are still issues at board level that won't go away. Villa have an owner and Chief Executive who appear to have little or no football knowledge. I say that as someone who still thinks RL is the best owner for the Villa. I wobbled a bit after the Everton result but can't think of anyone better. Without footie knowledge at board level, though, a lot of the problems at the club under O'Neill and his successors will continue to check the progress of the club.
