Argentinian Striker Linked - Villa Transfer Talk

The Mirror claim that Paul Lambert has made a late enquiry for Lazio`s 25-year-old Argentinian striker Mauro Zarate. They say it would be a loan with a view to a permanent move.

They`ve even done my job for me finding a youtube!

Wiki: Click Here Scoring stats seem fairly low?

The Mirror say: "Versatile Zarate, who can play as a second striker or wide, has gone for big money in the past but Villa are hoping to strike a cut-price agreement."

Meanwhile other press are saying that Villa haven`t given up on getting Genk striker Christian Benteke with the Club set to make a third and final £5.5million offer for the Belgian international.

Matt Kendrick says at The Birmingham Mail that Villa are still looking at Bowery. He adds, the player is is a strong 21-year-old 6ft 1ins forward who appears to fall into the 'one for the future` category and Villa have enquired about him, although a formal bid has not yet been made. He still has two years left on his contract at Chesterfield and early indications suggest he could be available for £500,000, with the League Two club insisting on several add-on clauses.

It is the ex scumbag yeah, since then hes played for Lazio and Inter Milan. Ive heard he can occasionally be lazy, but also capable of utter magic on the ball. Could possibly the inspiration we need/allow N'Zogbia to realise he is thoroughly droppable if he doesn't buck his ideas up!

This was the guy who used to play for Small Heath? He was brilliant for them I seem to remember.

Would be a good signing if we can get him. This is my first post on here and although I wonder about the direction that we are going on, I feel that some of the comments I read go in the "careful what you wish for" category. Defoe? Never worked out with Bent at Spurs. Similar player to Bent - gives no link up play. High wages. Would probably come to us to score and then get one last big move next year... leaving us in this position again. Adam? Can't tackle. Poor decision making. Why buy an older Bannan? Dawson? I like him... but why get him in on high wages and further stunt Clark's development? Also injury prone and slow.... Dunne??? Joe Cole? 100k a week just keep the physios in work? Yes we need experience - we haven't replaced Petrov yet... but paying average Prem players big money is not the answer

His strike rate is decent if not prolific, but he gets as many assists as he does goals on average so maybe worth a punt, he has some talent on the ball. Stats :

Berbatov having a medical at Fulham, can't believe we were not interesting in him. Doesn't fit the 'young and hungry' criteria I know but certainly fits the 'experienced and knows where the net is' criteria. Wages could have been a problem but not compared to the loss of revenue if the unthinkable happened......UTV

Only thing that Berbatov knows is where the bench is these days. We don't want Mercenaries. Young, hungry, willing to work for peanuts is the way forward.

Let's not over romantacise things here, I wouldn't call the wages these 'young hungry' players are on 'peanuts'. They probably still earn more in month than most people earn in a year!

Looking at the bigger picture AHA, we're a premiership team (not a builders firm/office block) that is paying championship wages on championship players. I firmly believe that it's down to the manager to get the best out of these players and he is more than capable of turning them into prem players, or to put it another way, capable of forming them into a team that can compete against other prem teams. Fergie has worked with some very average players over the years but the end product of the team result was there.

Fair point about differing industries, but I doubt that players such as bennett are coming here on the same wages he was picking up at 'boro. We became known as a club where you could pick up way more than you were worth, thats a thing of the past now and i think we are paying wages more in line with other clubs of our standing i.e. 7th-15th. I doubt Vlaar an Ahmedi are on championship wages, nor Holman and Lowton.

Strangely I agree with V444 about the mangers team building / forming abilities and responsibility and with AHA about the wages...there are some mega earners here or were that weren't fit enough for a run of games. Now we have the team being formed of healthier hungrier players geared up for a challenge. We will not go down this season. We will not make top half. BUT we will get stronger and stronger. We just have to accept it will take time ad INVESTMENT from RL via faith in Lambert.

Zarate would be a great signing but don't know how he'd go with Bent, Benteke could better just on the size of him but I'd get both!

True Fergie has worked with some average players but also a number of very good ones too.. I'd be well happy with Zarate, or Benteke. We still need more quality. Oh and welcome to the nuthouse, wizard21 :)
