Aston Villa Press Transfer Talk.. Bids DUE?

Transfer window talk for 29/08/2012

Mat Kendrick ‏@MatKendrick
Asked if there have been any enquiries for Warnock or Hutton, Lambert replied: 'No, none. I can`t do anything if the phone doesn`t go.'

Mat Kendrick ‏@MatKendrick
Enjoyable bit of guarded transfer banter with Paul Lambert tonight. Reporter: 'Are you close to Joe Bennett?' Manager: 'What, personally?!'

James Nursey ‏@JamesNursey
Lambert was coy on Benteke post-match at #AVFC but hopeful of landing Boro's Joe Bennett. I still think double swoop v possible

Mat Kendrick ‏@MatKendrick
Paul Lambert confirms, in the vaguest possible way, his hope that deals for Christian Benteke and Joe Bennett will go through #avfc

Timothy Abraham ‏@TimothyAbraham
Tony Mowbray said #Boro 'not in a hurry' to sell Joe Bennett but 'if the numbers were right' they would 'consider it'. #AVFC

The Express have a report saying that Villa have enquired about Kenwyne Jones that seems to fly in the face of what Paul Lambert has said:

Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones: Kenwyne Jones Interesting Villa? nope: No Defoe Or Jones Move

The Express & Star have some quotes from Paul Lambert about the latest two links:

He says on Bennett: "Hopefully something might happen on that. Has a bid gone in? Near enough. It`s like Benteke, there`s no point in me really talking about it until I know. I think it`s unfair on Villa, unfair on Middlesbrough, unfair on Genk and unfair on the lads themselves. I`ll wait and see. There`s no point me talking about it until something happens. We`ve just got to try and see where we are with Genk."

Meanwhile, Boro boss says on Bennett: 'We've had a few conversations with Aston Villa over the last few days, but he's not a player we're in a hurry to move on,' he told the club's official website. 'He's done exceptionally well for us and is a very talented individual. But like all players, if the numbers get to the right level, we will consider it.'

21 year old, 22 year old. Neither have played in the PL. NO. We need experience for the here and now.
The Fear
I would agree Fear but if there's one man who can make it happen its Paul Lambert. Cannot put into words how impressed I am with our gaffer. Absolute class. Proper player in his day as well with the medals to prove it.
Villa_Grizzly
Bennet is good enough for the Prem defo, the Belgian ?? never seen him play but I trust Lambert with signings ...... 10th will do this year the carry on building next summer with more youth for the future. UTV
astonmilan
Disagree Fear. When do you draw the line? Panic buys of journey men will only take us round in circles. Newcastle's geat season last year was built on players with virtually zero prem experience, as was the spuds team before it. We need young, hungry and talented who can do great things for us and then be sold at a profit.
AVbornandbred
I disagree too sorry fear, youth and building for the future are the way.
AdzVilla11
I cant see what experienced PL player we can get in for the money we can spend on fee and wages.... Realistically a player with prem experience is out of our budget and wont want to come to Villa unless in the twilight of their career looking for a payday swan song - we cant afford those types of players... Michael Essien is being banded about for 8m, sounds exactly what we need, but how much wages and how many games do we get out of him? Personally I am prepared for a tough season of bedding in a promising young squad, keeping the faith and and a good group together to bond and having a real go at a european run with a settled team in 2-3 years time.... key to that is keeping PL as manager for the long term. Lets get behind our man!
se5 villain
And if we go down in the process Adz? Man Utd brought through youth brilliantly but had experience to help them through. I'm all for building for the future, but I'm also wanting some performances in the here and now.
The Fear
And I'm sorry, disagreeing with me? how very dare you LOL ;o))))
The Fear
That is the question though se5... we've cut costs, we had to, but we don't have a pauper owner, we do have a fair turnover, it was right to cut back but you can't keep cutting back. We used to be neck and neck with the 4-7 places, now we are miles away.
The Fear
dont stand for it Fear!! Ban them from the site haha!! I hate to say it, and no one would like us, but would you sign Joey Barton??
leelindsay
Still reckon that a bit of experience is essential. Whether the lads can get that from Lambert from the sidelines is debatable but possible and our only option at present. Tranmere was only 3rd tier opposition and you can only beat what's in front of you but they have little to no experience. Looks like Dunne and Given's days are numbered but they're not experienced in winning with that mentality anyway.
Villan444
Think without Lerner putting some REAL money forward we are in trouble. We have a good manager at last but trying to keep a side in the prem on a shoestring is not going to work. IMO there are to many holes to plug EG. defence 2 players midfield 2 players and at least 1 decent striker. We are crying out for quality .Got to agree with Fear experiance needed. The thing I fear most is that Lambert will get frustrated and walk out if he cant make decent signings. BBC are linking us with Southamptons 30 y.o. striker Lambert
Merlin128777
Agree we need more experience but the prices are stupid, at least were linked with players in the positions we need. Now for the midfield monster, Essien on loan would be awesome.
son_of_cher
we need experience. we will get relegated otherwise
We're Not Fickle
If experience was all thatmattered last year we had hutton, warnock, collins, dunne, cuellar, given, gabby, bent, nzogbia, ireland, heskey, etc and it didn't do much good. We've still got enough experience of both the premiership and other top leagues what we need IMO is quality, talent and desire.
AVbornandbred
There's a good article on F365 about the need for teams who can't make the top 4 to build a legacy that the fans can enjoy. I'm all for it. I'm fed up of so-called experience. Look what it has done for us the last couple of seasons. I don't know much about Bennett, but Benteke looks like a solid buy.
Lee282
Agree with avborn, all those wonderfully experienced prem players nearly got us relagated last year, and the year before that, more luck and worse teams than us spared us that! Once all these players are upto speed oct say we will be fine! Untill then we will get the odd result and improve ,just like all the other prem squads! We are building a squad for now and the future not for a quick fix ,we have tried that and it almost destroyed us! Good times ahead!
brisbane lion
A couple of people mentioned Nigel Rio Coker is available on a free. I initially thought it was rediculous but growing to like the idea - his problem was with a manager now gone, he's a passionate experienced campaigner with experience of being at the top and bottom of the prem, a past captain, not really a journeyman either I wouldnt say and I doubt he'd be demanding crazy wages.
revolutionatlast
I also read (one of the less reliable sites I admit!) that Aaron Lennon is surplus to requirements. At 26 he's a great age for us - experienced but with time to develop (and appreciate further). He's quick and would give us the width we seem to be desperately lacking. I wonder if he is seen as fringe player at Spurs if we could get him for 6-8m and persuade him to take a modest pay cut to play every week. Im sure DB9 would appreciate him!
revolutionatlast
Lastly (I promise!) am I the only one that thinks, as much Im still more than happy with PL, that he was a tad naive kicking Warnock to the reserves? Hutton Im more ok with (!) but I think Warnock, though he had wobbles, is a solid enough player we are now missing. Nobody did well under McLeish. For me, when you already have 4 other promoted reserves starting a football match, it would make sense to have a more gentle phased introduction for younger players in positions where we have more competion. Thats it now sorry!
revolutionatlast
Seems from last night that we might again have shipped a young talent out too soon . We're on about getting a big striker & there's James Collins scoring a hat trick for Swindon against Stoke . What price Gary Cahill ,James Collins & Peter Whittingham. Oh well Id settle for Benteke , Bennett & someone creative
AstonBilla
Lennon is a shorter version of Gabby and nowhere near as good. NO WAY to reo-Coker. He robbed us for the last year with us. Wouldn't sign an extension and wouldn't move elsewhere as he wanted the signing fee all to himself. Greedy little *****er.
Villan444
Sorry - did somebody mention Joey Barton? As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't buy JB if we were threatened with bankruptcy. Better to have principles and integrity than any number of extra points on the board. Better to have no Aston Villa than to buy players like that.
BobTheBuilder
@LeeLindsay I'm just stunned mate, didn't realise there was any other opinion apart from mine to be honest. LOL... Barton? Exactly the sort of player we need, exactly the sort of character we don't. No, I'd not sign him!

Agree revolution, thought Warnock in mid might have done a bit for us to be honest, he also had the most interceptions last season (106) out of all defenders. Not great but not bad enough to be dumped the way he has been. However, obviously, they might know something we don't?
The Fear
Know what you are saying avbornandbred but would you not concede it is all about getting the mix right? Have you ever seen a team full of 'kids' win anything without experience around them? I've not.
The Fear
Agree with 444 re- Reo Coker he struggled to get a club last year and then helped to get Bolton relegated no thanks. Same applies to Barton I suppose for half time entertainment we could have him a Hutton kicking lumps out of each other other than that got no use for the guy.
Merlin128777
Maybe I'm in the minority but rather than youth/experience... Can't we try sign quality? The problem at the moment is that we are short anywhere from 3 to 6 first team players... If the guy is 19 or 33 so long as he improves our side I am happy. Shouldn't we be rather looking at it that way?
Astriel
I would imagine the two young lads coming in, not worried about experience really, potentially there's enough in there. We will know what we are in for this season after about 10 games. I thought we would start the season motoring under Lambert, new manager syndrom'n'all. Interesting to see how it pans out. Not gonna freak out just yet, but it hasn't been a good start. I love the look of him, but how is young Nathan's pace?? Not seen him in person, so don't want to upset anyone!! Go on the Villa
donz
Mr Fear has 'Hanson syndrome' You'll never win anything with kids.
Lock
Reo Coker on a free anyone?
macca1087
Sorry for disagreeing fear!! Just off to wash my mouth out with soap ...... It won't happen again
AdzVilla11
I agree with Astriel. I'd rather just have a load of quality, regardless of age or experience. If they're good enough to improve the squad then sign them.
