Lambert Really Disappointed

Paul Lambert has admitted he was disappointed following today's showing, but he promises the team will pick themselves up.

Speaking to the Official Site following the 3-1 loss, Lambert did say he was pleased with how we kept going but admitted our efforts came after the horse had bolted.

'You have to react and pick yourself up. There's another game on Tuesday so you have to pick yourself up. I was really disappointed. You can't, in any game of football, give someone a couple of goals start. The only pleasing thing was the second half, we kept going but the horse had bolted.'

Lambert continued to talk about the fans pushing the team on, but it being down to the team to create the running and the tempo especially when at home.

He also said.

'It's my responsibility. I take the blame for it, but there's a chance to rectify it on Tuesday.'

Which makes a refreshing change after last season. However, in many ways he is right. We didn't create enough against West Ham but we were very solid defensively.

Removing Delph from the team was the wrong decision to take, and he sat defensively very well, albeit not giving us anything up front. And there are no excuses for the performance from the person who lost the ball or ran it out of play every single time it came with 5ft of him. What was it, one cross - to the position Bent was in before he moved into some space.

We can't keep carrying players and that's 2 for 2 now for our No 10.

A more balanced midfield has to include Bannan, El Ahmadi, Delph, Herd or Holman, depending on whether we lead with 1 or 2 up front. Leave Bannan to pick out the passes, and leave Delph to sit in front of the defence.

West Ham showed we created more with Bannan on, but we were weaker defensively, and to be honest we don't have enough movement up front when Bent is alone, so start him with Weimann and give the midfield the chance to pass forward instead of having to go sideways or backwards because there isn't an option on.

Most will want to know about transfer following today, so Paul ended with.

'If something comes available and I think it's worthwhile, then you can look at it. Randy, Paul and I will sit down and see what's going to happen.'

Now I can't for the life of me believe Lambert took the job with the plan to only bring in three players before the window shut. Maybe some options haven't come off, but there has to be other options out there that would improve the squad and give us more depth.

I'm all for the youth being given the chance as everybody knows, but we all equally know where we are weak in the team, and youngsters will make mistakes, so they need quality around them.

Another three in has to be the minimum really. I don't buy into the relegation worries some have at the moment, because with a better balance - dare I say the right balance - in the team, whilst we won't suddenly become a surprise package this season, a 12 to 15 place finish is doable. But without another three quality additions it wouldn't take many suspensions or injuries to totally derail that given how thin we are currently.

Very poor showing. I said last week, and again this, it looks like men against boys. Ireland needs to play every week so we have someone who is creative and he can find his form. Bannan is not good enough. Baker looked good last year at CB and showed it yesterday. I have always thought Clark is too slow. It shows by the number of yellows he has to concede whne in midfield. At CB he need to learn better positioning of he will be getting more reds. Lets see now he is suspended how Baker does with Vlaar? The new guys do not have the baggage and bad memories form losing so many games last 2 years that the rest of the squad have. So the more new winners we get the better. Weimann looks so up for it whenever he plays, if we do not buy another striker he has to be given a chance to start. Lambert looks to be giving all the players a chance, like MON did, remeber Luke Moore having a good 12 game run and not making it. Do that for Weimann and I reckon he will score us a few. Bent has no service,if I were him I would be pulling my hair out and putting in a transfer request. My team for Tranmere would be Guzan, Lihaj Baker Vlaar Lowton, Delph Herd, Ireland Holman, Bent Weimann. I am sure PL will switch some players and change it again. At Norwich he hardly ever kept the same same side. No need to panic yet, PL is taking responsibility, as he should, and this also takes the pressure off the players. We do need to get some combinations going EG Baines Pienaar. This will come with time but some more in's and outs have to happen this week if we are going to avoid a relegation battle IMO.

Due to work committments I could not make game yesterday but did manage to go to Blackpool - Ipswich. Ince looks a prospect but I wonder how many of our youngsters could look that good given time in that league, especially against Ipswich. Any Villa fan thinking we should shell £6m on Cresswell needs to get real, he is not as good as what we already have. Also we must not go near Matt Philipps - he is not as good as Albrighton.

Next game we should start Weimann along side Bent, Ireland and Delph on the middle and Herd and Holman on the wings. Give Bent a few touches and there problem solved. Ireland being our attacking midfielder and Delph covering the defence.

Agree we wouldn't get Sturridge or Milner Pride but I'd really love to see us move for Dawson and the more I see of young Ince makes me want him also. We need players and fast

Terrible match, money needs to be spent or Randy won't have anyone to hide behind this time. I honestly don't care of they cost money. He decided to buy a Football club so you have to maintain's not rocket science. Had a made dream last night that PL walked (MON style)as he had been lied too by the board!

It was one of the pundits on MOTD last night that every consists of good partnerships, and when I thought of it, there's no two or more players that gel on the pitch in the Villa team. It's like we're fielding 11 players who have neve played with each other before. I think we've had a poor pre season and we still haven't decided what our best team is yet, which is a dangerous way to start a season as PL is finding out. Baker is not a LB, he'll be a top CB but the LB position should be regarded as a priority to strengthen. Saying that, Bent desperately needs a good partner up front. I wouldn't write the Fonz off yet as it was his first game back after injury but he doesn't seem ready yet. Weimann seems a better option but I'd rather dip into the market. I always said we should've gone for Lukaku on loan. In PL I still trust though, but how long will it take to decide on our best team.

Having had all night to think on the game, it is clear that Fonz had his last chance yesterday, Lambert now knows that he has 1 forward less in the squad. Baker was superb and played well in both positions, I know he didn't get forward when at LB but defensively was sound. Given looks a shadow and the euro problems have carried on, he needs benching. Clark, harsh card but looked shakey at times and panicky in a couple of instances. N'Zogbia, If that was him making a difference then what he thinks is good is way off the mark from the rest of us. Bent bone bloody idle. Bannan tried once again to hit the magical pass far to often, always looked for the ball I will give him but the wasted it. Vlaar soild and looked better with Baker alongside him. Lowton I thought was steady but again when going forward did not offer the width. Al-hamadi nice strike and was busy all afternoon but lacked a partner to pick up. Herd was solid and I am still not sure where his best position is, and neither is Lambert. We lacked width yesterday and that was painfully clear we are never going to create with the fullbacks, I expected to see a roar yesterday and what I got was a whimper. We need at least 3 players with premiership experience and I don't mean from a relegated club.
