NextGen - Villa 1 - 3 Sporting Lisbon

Disappointing result on the night for the lads, and it doesn't really reflect the performance they put in, but if you don't take your chances and the other team does this is what happens.

Some old heads missing, and some new names on the teamsheet, I'm sure it'll be a good lesson for them as they gel, but certainly more positives will be taken by McAndrew I think, than negatives.

Villa:

Barrett, Bateman, Devine, Williams, Calder (Lewis 75/Watkins-Clark 90), Barton (Eminoglu 75), Ward (Crowley 82), Melvin, Graham, Grealish, Drennan.

Subs:

Strain, O'Brien.

Goals - Drennan (31)

Sporting Lisbon:

Meine, Riquicho, Figueiredo, Seniedo, Pinto, Le, Mane, Mallmann (Cortez 63), Guedes (Janco 87), Rosa (Mantius 75), Medeinos.

Subs:

Oliveira, Ponde, Santos.

Goals - Le (33), Mane (40), Figueiredo (pen 60).

Sporting Lisbon were a very good team and a little too physical at times. We certainly missed players of the calibre of Gardner, Johnson and Carruthers. However, all is not doom and gloom. The lads worked hard and I was particularly impressed with Liam Bateman at right back, what a long throw!

Sorry to be so negative. Drennan could of had a hat trick on another night. As soon as we scored, they scored and played keep ball all second half. No way was it a penalty! And the yellow card at the end? wow the poor kids lucky his still able to walk. That tackle was vile, he deserved a Red! Who wears the number 10 top for us? He looks good but for me, wayyy to greedy on the ball, he needs to learn to pass.

10 was Jack Grealish I think. Great talent but did try to do too much himself. All the best players from last seasons NG games are now in our 1st team squad which can only be a good thing. These boys will learn and become better for the experience. Sporting Lisbon were just bigger & stronger than our boys.

Disappointed, but it's not the end of the world for them. They will learn from this and become stronger.

We didn't have enough of a physical presence IMO. Last year Gardner provided that. Grealish and Graham have fantastic ball skills, but after an impressive 1st 30 minutes tried to 'overdo it'. Drennan looks a natural goalscorer. Is Burke too old? Also any idea why Calum Robinson and Josh Webb were not involved? Along with Jordan Graham they are all England U17 internationals and so not too old

Bad luck lads, we are not out of it yet though.
