'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lambert Forum - Initial Impressions - Updated

With huge thanks to Neilh111. Tactics, humour and no Makoun.

-----

A quick summary of how I view Paul Lambert comments from tonight.

We will never see Makoun again. Lambert has never met him and says he is not contributing to the club.

Vlaar and Clark will be our main CB partnership. He thinks Vlaar is a good leader and can help Clark develop.

Lots of youngsters will be in the first team this season.

He doesn't like getting players on loan.

He watched Vlaar last season, but on the whole he says players who were right for Norwich will not necessarily be right for Villa.

Sounds to me like he is not going to add another striker, when asked where our goals come from if Bent is injured, he said that hopefully it won't happen but we will cross that bridge if we come to it.

He felt sorry for McLeish when Villa fans were singing Lamberts name at the Norwich game.

Quite a few times he mentioned how big a club Villa is.

Said MON is a great manager and he asked his advice before coming here. MON said it was a great club to work at. Also he would still call MON now if he needs advice.

He showed a sense of humour a few times and said Chris Herd will be good when he stops fighting with doormen.

When asked about new signings he hinted that it was possible but said he was happy to go with what we have now if we have to.

He said that a lot of clubs are not using wingers now, but creative midfielders instead, and he mentioned Ireland and N'Zogbia as being the ones to create things for Bent.

Said he changed the dugouts around because that is where the linesman is and you can get in his ear better from there, mentioned being closer to the Holte as an afterthought.

Said Delia never cooked once for him at Norwich.

RandyStand has some exclusive information about the end of last season. I'll leave him to tell you that.

(will edit and update if Randy is nice to me lol - MF)

If you want to listen to the edited version, then it will be on Radio WM at 7pm on Friday.

Interesting comments on both Makoun and the striker position?

Will leave people to make their own minds up, but maybe Lambert does think he can get the best out of Gabby, Delboy and the Weeman?

Randy.Stand's update...

Isn't an awful lot to say in all honesty.

Board realised as early as the Spurs game in November that McLeish could have been a mistake when Hutton played right midfield. Was seriously considering sacking him right after that Bolton game but weighed up the pro's and con's and decided to stick as we saw what happened with Wolves, Newcastle and Charlton in previous years.

McLeish knew the sack was coming. Just genuinely think they realise how massive a mistake it was.

Looking forward with the new manager is the most important part now anyway. We have a good, young, hungry and vibrant manager who is proud to be our manager. He stands no nonsense, want to play the right way and convinced he'll bring some good times to the club. McLeish is history, so don't like speaking about him too much but was an excellent night tonight.

Also, our old friend General Krulak is well. Very busy with his role at the University in America but still on the board as many suggested otherwise and still very much involved with the club.

Interesting about Makoun. Clearly nowhere in his plans for Warnock and Hutton. Told some funny stories about his past experiences. Got to say though, there weren't half some stupid questions dished out. And good to meet the manager after too. Nice bloke, and get the feeling he's so proud to be manager of AVFC.

I thought this might happen but was hoping it wasnt true... I would imagine he's looking to fully assess the current squad by January and ship a few out when the window opens... Im guessing its last chance salloon for the non-committed, poor performers and high earners to prove they want to succeed at Villa before January or else... Very surprised by the striker comments tho even with great leadership and management its a big burden for Gabby, Weimann and the fonz to fill DB9's shoes... I hope Ireland finds the net on a consistent basis and once again becomes a goalscoring midfielder...
CDX_EIRE
Got to be another striker really, that said we know played properly Gab's is good for at least 10 a season, Delboy is instinctive in the box and Weimann has high hopes. If he thinks people from midfield will chip in, and of course Clarkie has shown he will find the net...maybe it's a risk he's prepared to run for 6 months?
mike_field
The Mirror are running a story that Makoun is off to Rennes...
CDX_EIRE
If Makoun doesn't come back then let's use that money towards another signing then.
holte ender 1969
It's all well and good saying use the money from makoun, Hutton, warnock but you actually have to sell them first
Aussie Villain
Take your point Aussie Villain, but we should see Makoun going to Rennes soon. Mutton and Warnock are commodities we may struggle to offload. think it'sa mistake relying on goals from Gabby, Fonz and Weimnn - 12 max betwen them.......
Pride of Lions
Yes agree Pride, if DB9 gets another injury then the wheels could come off. A big man is needed and I hope someone in the mould of Carew but for not a lot of money.

If the fonz was playing for someone like Wigan or Swansea he would be subject of transfer links to bigger clubs. When the ball is played in to feet he has a good first touch and the ability to beat a player. Not saying he's top notch but with a good run in the team and some decent coaching I don't see much difference to players like sturridge who everyone raves about.
AVbornandbred
Sorry "bornandbred", successive managers have tried Fonz and even Burnley found him wanting when there on loan. No doubt he has talent, always thought his attitude was a bit sus though. In the mould of Luke Moore, somewhat. Love to be proved wrong, though. This may well be his last chance to prove he has what it takes.

I was there last night as well. Don't read too much into the lack of striker purchases as a done deal. PL kept insisting that nothing was in tablets of stone and he would be flexible and change if needed, strikers cost money but he expects goals to come from the whole team. It was refreshing that he had a swipe at the academy system that he says produces players who drove to work in Skoda one day, got a contract, and come to work the next day in a Mercedes. He said his players at Norwich were experienced professionals some of whom had played 200 - 300 games at Div 1 and championship level and that had better prepared them for the Premier league that coming straight out of an Academy. He confirmed that players cannot use phones and ipads etc while at "work". He said such things were unnecessary distractions in the workplace. All in all he came across as a no nonsense manager that knows his own mind but will admit to making mistakes and learn from them and change if necessary. He said that when he arrived at Villa he found lots of talented individuals but no team ethic, which he hoped to develop. The night is being broadcast on radio WM Friday evening

Fonz Has far better touch than Gabby and there are folks on here who think gabby is good Takes all sorts
villan57
Fonz will never make it.Do not think Gabby is the be all but compared to Fonz hes way above Fonzs standard.
Merlin128777
I have a bit of inside knowledge on someone who knows Fonz very well and he genuinelly tries his best to be a success and really wants someone to give him the chance, a run of games in a side that plays properly (i.e. not Burnley) and he can show what he is capable of. So I think he's different to Moore. Hopefully in training, Lambert can maje a good judgement. If he has the skill, he can play games, if not, he can do ok somewhere else, he sounds like a good bloke though from what I hear.
thekentvillan
and lets not forget el fonzo is one of us...or does that not make a difference now ?
malacaxeta
kent - I am sure all players 'want' to do well but you also need that extra drive and hunger. Look how much Luke Moore outshone Rooney in the FA Yth Cup final but Rooney had the fire in his belly that Moore did not. I think the Fonz is the same to an extent, he needs to learn to listen and actually take in and do what the coaches ask. Some people just dont ever get it... i.e. How good would Gabby be with more intelligent movement? How many goals could he score then?
