'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shay To Given His Heart & Soul To Villa

Shay Given has talked about his reasons for hanging up his international gloves with the Republic of Ireland, and as expected, Aston Villa figured very highly as a reason.

Speaking to the Official Site Given explained:

'One of the main reasons was because I wanted to put my full heart and soul into Aston Villa. I want to give Villa everything I have. I'm not getting younger, and I felt it's time to concentrate on Aston Villa - the club, the supporters.'

Given also talked about other keepers in his position and their ages when they retired officially from anything but club football, but he still admits it was a wrench as he's loved representing his country and he does know he'll miss it.

I can't remember where else I read it, but he also commented that he was very grateful for the contract the club were prepared to offer him, so despite missing out on additional caps, he knows it's time to make sure he can honour and repay the faith we showed in him.
