'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shay Given Retires From International Football?

Don't normally do an awful lot when it comes to international aspects, but if Shay Given has hung his international gloves up then it can only be a good thing for Villa in many ways.

The demands and disruptions of an international calender at his wise age would put additional pressures on him, and in terms of him no doubt wanting to see out his contract in the fittest possible way, then focusing solely on his club career now can only be of benefit to his form and fitness.

Tweeting within the last 30 minutes, Shay has said:

'After a lot of thought and consideration, I have made the most difficult decision to retire from international football. It's been great.'

Adding his thanks to his wife and family for their support over his years and 125 caps, before wishing the Republic the very best for the future, and thanking his colleagues and the staff that have played a part in his international career, finally thanking 'the most wonderful fans in the world.'

Shay also talked about his honour at captaining the team.

how old is he now?
black_villian
He's 36 now, so by the time the next World Cup comes round he'd be 38. Made the right choice to retire now. Absolute legend.
