Paul Lambert has the support of former manager John Gregory, who said the performance against Peterborough was ten times better than anything we've seen for the past few seasons.
Speaking to the Official Site Gregory is convinced that Lambert can push Villa back up the table and create some excitement and enjoyment along the way after what he's witnessed in pre season.
'Villa are in good hands with Paul. There were a lot of youngsters in the team at Peterborough but it was ten times better than Villa performances of the past couple of seasons. Everyone seemed to know exactly what his job was and they all passed the ball well. There was some really good one and two touch football. I think they will be fine.'
Gregory also says with a bit of luck, a top 8 finish isn't that far fetched given the squad we have, which I tend to agree with but I don't think people should have that as the benchmark for his first season. Let's have a nice comfortable mid to top half finish, without getting too carried away as we all know, whilst our performances and finishes last season weren't good enough for the squad we have, Lambert has lots of work left to do before we realistically talk about a European challenge. 8-12th is doable, and anybody should be happy with that.
The best comment from Gregs concerns the players' attitudes.
'Paul knows what he wants from his players and he usually gets it. If not, the player concerned usually leaves the club very quickly. There's an air of ruthlessness about him and the lads will certainly know who the boss is.'
I think a few of them already do!
