Lambert Liking Centre Half Pairing

Despite the defeat, Paul Lambert has said the signs are good for Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark as a centre half pairing.

Speaking to the Official Site, Lambert heaped praise on Clark for his attitude and the way he handles himself, and he also said he believes Ron Vlaar has settled in well, but more importantly he sees the signs of a burgeoning understanding between them both that will serve us well in the future.

'The fans gave Ron a great reception and I thought his performance was excellent. He'll be a good player for us, he's the kind who will fit in straight away. Ron and Ciaran were excellent together and combined well as a partnership. For a young guy Ciaran handles himself very well, he offers great balance on the left side of the pair and I'm really pleased with how they developed an understanding.'

Early days by any standard really, but hopefully both players can build up a proper understanding that will serve us well as the season progresses. We already know Clark has a great understanding with Baker, so if we can shore up the middle of defence and stop the leaks, we should have a much more entertaining season.

Yep, I think that could be the starting partnership. A partnership has to built up and this weekends' game against Werner Breman is another chance to firm it up.

It would be real nice to see Clark at the back with Vlaar, he has that something special I am sure

Don't know if any of you agree, but I think Clark looks a better footballer than Cahill did at the same age, and he went on to do OK! Him and Vlaar is going to be great for us I reckon.

Can we call the paring Vlaarke? Easier to type.

Clark n Vlaar M'Lord, Clark n Vlaar!!

Can't really judge Vlaark from one preseason game against lower tier opponents. The real test will be against Werder Bremen and WEst Ham.

I rate Clark extremely highly, probably the best thing to come through our youth system. 20m future fefender

Agree Clark given a full season at the back could benefit him a lot and see him become the defender we know he can be.

vlaark has a lot of potential, but like all potential it needs time. I worry that between them they've only experienced a dozen or so premier league games in central defence and obviously none together. It has to be a gamble because Clark will be relying on Vlaar who will experience a new type of physicality in defence, a new tempo, and alongside new full backs. I still think it'll be a tough season for Villa. Although we are back moving in the right direction.

Clark could well be our next Paul McGrath but a sober one lol
