Lambert Believes In Our New Boys

Paul Lambert has said that he's not afraid of the history of the club and whilst our new signings might not be household names, he believes in what they add to our team.

Betfair already have us as 2.36 odds to return to the top ten and BBC Sport labelled him a winner. Looks like the fans optimism is backed by his own optimism and confidence.

Speaking to the Scottish Sunday Mail, our gaffer said of our expectations, our history, and the type of player he has added to the team:

'Aston Villa are a big club with a massive support. They expect to be successful and to be winning - and they are quite right to think like that. It's up to me to make that a reality and I will give it my best.'

Saying ultimately that it's players who win games, he continues:

'I take great care about the type of player I sign. They have to have to right characteristics, be confident and must be able to fit in. I have inherited some good players and have added quality. The names might not roll off the tongue but I believe in them.'

As for the historical element, he concludes by saying that our history is a perfect example of what the club should be striving to achieve now, and as well as rightly honouring our heroes of the past, he hopes he can oversee success that gives rise to the heroes of the future.

All this positivity lark still confuses me.

Oh one last quote for those wondering about finances:

'In terms of finance, I know exactly what the club can do. Listen, it's not all about cash, that's never my outlook. What I do know is it will be an exciting season and I'm pleased to be part of it.'

Surely we've all learnt by now it's not what the club can do in terms of cash, it's where that cash doesn't look like Lambert has wasted a penny yet and you'd have to imagine he's at least looking at another 3 signings minimum, and whilst not every player will turn out to be a success, I'd imagine we are going to do well for the money we do spend.

A marquee signing would just be the icing on the cake though!

Mike, I;d say 3 signings minimum is a tad ambitious...probably 3 max but I think it will be two more...those being a midfielder and a striker and possibly another defender - if Cresswell is that good we should snap him up and do a Spurs and loan him out if we can't play him and then he'll come back even better :-)

I like your thinking re Cresswell koolbill.... I too think a max of three, but one just has to be a quality striker. I like what PL says about type of player he looks to sign and about the names not rolling off to tongue. This time last year hardly any of the Norwich players' names rolled off the tongue, and they did all right.

We still need a Left Back, Centre Back, Winger and a Striker all of whom should improve our starting line up. It won't be cheap but there's no point buying anymore squad players, we need proven quality. I hope PL doesn't think he can start the new season with only Gabby, Bent, Zog and Ireland as our attacking force.

Yup really refreshing stuff regarding the players. Reminds me of when a fresh Brian Little came in and bought Draper, Wright, Southgate and reinvented the team.

Who's your desired players for these positions Son?
06/08/2012 10:10:00
Agree with Cher, although we might be able to get away without a winger. Who though? $64,000 question (and roughly how much we've got left in the budget).
06/08/2012 10:49:00
personally I'd be happy if we just sign a decent big striker to give us more options up top
06/08/2012 15:38:00
Wouldn't have a clue of who is available or how much cash we have to spend koolbill. What I do know is that of we get any injuries to our key players or if they cant produce the goods for whatever reason this time, we will probably struggle again. I'm happy with the route PL has taken so far and his signings are pretty much risk free. I'm just hoping they settle and can hack the Premier League....remember all of them are unproven at this level. They could be gems, they could flop but at least we'll get our cash back if we need to sell them.

Wise words mate SOC. I'm sure we'll have lots of ups and down....look at ManU - they were the original big spenders and buyers of the league and now they're behind ManC, Chelsea and PSG in terms of spending power - no guaranteed success anywhere.
