Makoun Problems Continue

We reported a few weeks back: Aston Villa have confirmed tonight that Jean II Makoun has been allocated the No 17 shirt, but that he is still suffering work permit problems following his loan spell last season. The brief statement was made on the clubs' Twitter feed (you know I'm slowly getting the hang of that place!). 'Responding to fans queries, Jean II Makoun is No 17. Waiting for work permit issues to be cleared up.' Probably won't stop the conspiracies, but there you have it.

That was following: Jean Makoun II Work Permit Hold Up

He was due a fresh start and it looked like many of the fans backed that, see: Jean Makoun? Poll Results

makoun

However the latest update is that he is still struggling to get a work permit and it appears that the main stumbling block for the 29-year-old Cameroon international that Houllier paid around £5million for is he can`t pass an English test!

The Birmingham Mail

When Lambert was asked, he said: "Will he be part of my plans? I haven`t seen him yet. I`ll have to wait and see. I know the work permit is a big thing here and the group at the minute is very good. I am trying to build the squad and we will see what happens. The group are coming along nicely and that is all you can ask for."

Seems the nugget stopped his English lessons when he moved to Olympiakos on loan. Didn`t show a great deal of ambition to get back to Villa really did it? Fingers crossed the work permit can be sorted and he can at least get a chance, be a shame for him to just have to be shipped out without really knowing.

Don't want to get all political, but half of the immigrants in this country can't speak English, but they are here and they all seem happy to 'take' from the state in terms of benefits, education, health services etc. However when a bloke who is qualified to work here and will puts hundreds of thousands pounds back into the pockets of the Government throught the taxes he will pay tries to get a job he is refused??? Correct me if I am wrong, but neither Mascerano or Tevez could speak a word of English when they came to the country, but they managed to play for several English clubs without any work permit issues. There is more to this than meets the eye I think.

I don't see what it's got do with immigration if his English is *****. Surely that's Villa's problem. ridiculous rules

100% with you VOTH. Besides, with Idiot in charge last season and not at all interested in Makoun and Makoun then on loan in Greece, surely he'd start Greek lessons... for all he knew they may of wanted to buy him. So, to me, it's totally understandable that he stopped his English lessons... or is too simple?
Pride of Lions
Have met immigrants who can speak better English than 'natives'. Tevez, however, by his own admission still has a poor command of the language. Also can't understand the logic of the immigration service. There are non-nationals with serious criminal records walking the streets and yet a footie player who --as voth has already noted -- would put a fortune into the IR is rejected. Strange.

Remember, Makoun is non EU. I think the complication is that he has to do more forms having been out on loan for a year (ie he didn't do the majority in the UK which is what his work permit would have been for). Many who do come over who don't speak the language are able to because they have family who do have UK citizenship. I'm sure this will be sorted. I personally think it is a good thing if they are looking at things more closely and are requiring a little bit of minimal English, however, it is probably a bit late now to be fair.
The Fear
I think you will find Argentina is non EU Fear :o) Never seemed to affect Tevez and Mascherano?
voiceoftheholte
Agree that this will probably be sorted out. The powers that be are probably trying to look tough (cracking down on immigrants, etc). Yawn!!!
