Clarkie Looking For Starting Role

Ciaran Clark has said he wants to start the season as one of the first names on the team sheet, so he can prove he can end the season the same way.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail following the departure of James Collins and the injury to Richard Dunne, Clark knows he will be in a battle with Nathan Baker as to who starts alongside new signing Ron Vlaar in the centre of our defence, and following Paul Lambert's earlier praise of him, at the moment the assumption is left centre half is for him to lose.

'It's a big season for me, no doubt. I have played in several positions over the past few years and I certainly haven't complained because I've loved being part of it. But this season I am looking to push on and try and nail down a spot. Hopefully it'll be at the back, where I learned my trade.'

Clark knows it'll be a big ask to play every game this season, especially in his favoured position - especially as most fans I think are expecting Lambert to rotate a fair bit, and get the youngsters involved more - so he's just focused on playing more games than last season at the moment to continue his development and give him greater experience. Especially as we need to see Clark leading from the back, becoming more consistent and finding a balance between his defensive qualities but also chipping in with a few more goals as we know the lad has a left peg on him.

Top stuff, looking forward to seeing which youth products cement their position in the team.
The Fear
He is the future of our club. He has so much potential. I have high hopes of a decent partnership between clarky and "concrete" Vlaar. There is so many positives coming out of vp at the moment, i'm buzzing for the season to start. utv

I think he'll be on the teamsheet for West Sham - barring injury. But young Nathan will be pushing him hard.
