Delfouneso Secures 1-0 Win In USA Pre-Season

Well, ever dedicated, I went to bed last night instead of staying up and reporting on the pre-season friendly v Philadelphia Union!

Yes, I know, my work for this site is tireless but I`m not and those who have met me know I need as much beauty sleep as I can get. I have to admit, pre-season friendlies interest me very little, as Paul Lambert said recently, it is all about the fitness, not the results. See: Fitness & Style Are King In Pre Season

Anyway, Villa won 1-0 against the Union with a goal from Nathan Delfouneso. Wouldn`t it be great if he can progress this season?!

Lambert told Paul Brown www.avfc.co.uk that it was a good workout adding, "I thought we were excellent, certainly for good spells of the game."

philly.com agreed on that saying:

'The Birmingham-based Aston Villa would have been hard-pressed to dominate the first half more than it did. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the Villans led, 6-2, in shots and, 4-0, in shots. But even those statistics don't represent the domination. Until the 60th minute, the Union had a tough time even gaining possession on the Aston Villa half of the pitch.'

Lambert explained the match was tough because of the heat but said he was 'delighted` with the way the players performed.

The team:

Guzan, Lowton [Lichaj, 60], Collins BOOKED [Dunne, 66], Clark [Baker, 66], Warnock [Stephens, 60], El Ahmadi [Herd, 56], Holman [Gardner, 60], Bannan [Delph, 56], Ireland [N'Zogbia, HT], Delfouneso [Weimann, 52], Bent [c] [Agbonlahor, 52]. Subs: Marshall, Carruthers.

As long as that goal hasn't won another season of on the bench/injured for the Fonz I don't mind. For me, he's just not goodenough for the Premiership.

Too young to write off, I get peed off with how people are about our youth players, they give them five minutes and then say they are crap. He might or might not make it, but give him a chance!!

The Fonz, Delp, Bannan een Gardner ive seen fellow villans moaning he aint nothing special just a banch warmer? I always et pee'd off when i hear this on our yout graduates, look at Macheda he has done nothing for two seasons yet Ferge is waiting and giving him the chance even at Man Utd where they should score, all i say is everytime a new manager comes in players who played poor under the last manager or was not picked find a new self belief and some start playing good again this has happand at every club its really not rocket science imo.

Does anyone know how our midfield lined up last night? I'm guessing El Ahmadi and Ireland in the middle and Holman and Bannan on the flanks?

it was El Ahmadi and Bannan in the middle with Holman and Ireland out wide, although they both drifted inside constantly. The first half performance was really impressive at times although the need for a natural wideman was really evident. El Ahmadi was very good on and off the ball, its amazing how just doing the simple things can make such a difference. Bannan looked decent to, He seemed to be playing more of a holding role when we had the ball and would then switch with El Ahmadi when they did, I think that called tactics although its been a while so im not sure, The second half was pretty dross, Delph perticulary unimpressive although i understand fitness is the main goal at the moment, It was a pleasure to see us playing some good pass and move football although the usual suspects at the back (collins, Warnock, Dunne) Scare the life out of me when they try to knock it about, Great to see a decent amount of Villians at the game to, its been about 11 years since ive seen them play so it was awesome all round.

To be fair, Delfouneso has had one bad manager (Oliver Hardy) and one, sadly, past-it manager (Houllier) in just two years. Same goes for Delph, Albrighton, Bannan and several other young players. MON wasn't a bad manager but didn't exactly give youth a chance. Hopefully, all of these players will be given a chance to show what they can do.
