Lambert's Vision For Villa Sold Guzan

Brad Guzan has said it was Paul Lambert's vision for the future Villa that sold him enough to return and battle for the No 1 jersey with Shay Given.

Speaking to the Official Site in his first interview since rejoining us, Guzan said the decision was solely down to Paul Lambert's chat with him because he obviously already knows all about the club, our facilities and the players we have:

'First and foremost it was the discussion I had with the manager. I respected and enjoyed what he had to say and for me it was about getting a fair look in, in terms of making an impression on the team. After having that discussion and knowing what this club is all about and how big it is and where he wants to take it, then for me personally to be able to get opportunities to make my mark, it was exciting and I was looking forward to coming back. Being back with these guys, a good group of guys, and after speaking to the manager I'm excited to see where this football club is going to go and I want to be a part of it.'

There's certainly a strand running through most player interviews at the moment in regards to Paul's vision of where he wants to take the club, and he hasn't wasted any time so far, so hopefully good things can only be around the corner...even if though it won't change overnight.

As many fans seem to agree, I think Guzan felt very slighted after performing well between the sticks for us, to be then dropped instantly the second Given was back fit - especially after figuring previously in the cup runs and then being dropped for Friedel. It seems certainly the case that Lambert has impressed on the team that nobody is guaranteed a position anymore, and players will be picked on merit and dropped if they cannot maintain that standard.

'For me it was definitely a good run and it definitely fuelled the hunger inside of me. I just want to play first team football. So to have the opportunity, to have that run of games as opposed to cup football when you play every other month, it was a big difference. That's what I would like to do again this season.'

I very much doubt Brad has rejoined thinking he's No1 at the moment, but clearly he's expecting some rotation to get the opportunity to show that Given maybe may benefit from an extended break. If he works hard, and keeps his head down again, I'm sure we'll see a fair bit of him next season. He had certainly improved, so let's see how much more he can.

Agree Mike,i thought when he stepped in for Shay he was very good and had improved his game. Was surprised when we let him go and a bit of rotation would keep Shay on his toes and pre-long his game for us,good to see him back .

Brad was better than solid when Shay was out... shay is still a better keeper at the min imo however and it pains me to say it as a fellow country man of Shays I dont think he has the staying power Friedel has I cant see Shay playing at the highest level after he hits 37 or 38...

Yes, it seems a reoccuring theme since PL took over as manager and that is where he wants to take Villa. So make sure your seatbelts are on and enjoy the ride, we may have the odd skid, we may hit the odd bump in the road, but in general I'm sure we will enjoy the ride.

The outloook from the whole club is far more positive than this time last year. I am looking forward to the new season. I hope we all get behind Paul Lambert and the team. He has brought a new fresh look to the club.
