How About Darren Bent For Team Captain?

Ok, yesterday Mat Kendrick tweeted:

Darren Bent made captain for today's match. Interesting development. I had heard Bent had volunteered for the role in Petrov's absence

Today, Darren Bent has tweeted:

Was great to get out there for the claret and blue today after such a long time out. It was an honour to be captain, loved it!

That got the tiny cogs in my head turning!

Who would you have as team captain (bearing in mind #19 Stiliyan Petrov remains Club captain) ?

Bent wouldn`t be a bad shout in my humble opinion, if he could lead from the front, then why not. The only other major shout would be Shay Given but I`m not sure I like keepers as captains, they have enough to think about!

Last time we asked, these were the results:

Who should be the new team captain?
Poll Date: 10 Jun 2012
Suggested By: JP Fear

None, buy a new player worthy of being captain 57%

Given 23%
Dunne 9%
I've really no idea 3%
Ireland 3%
Agonlahor 2%
Other 2%
Bent 1%
Collins 0%

However, after Bent stepped up and volunteered, it made me wonder, has he matured, has he decided his future is at Villa and does he want to lead the team?

If so, go for it?!

before I was thinking he should be selfish and just be thinking about scoring for us, but maybe making him team captain would invigorate him even more and get him more ingrained at Villa?

bent is not a leader and also i think keepsers make better captains than forwards im not keen on forwards being captains at all

I don't think Bent is a leader either, but there again neither is Given. I would prefer a CB or CM for the captaincy. However, Lambert gave CF Holt the job at Norwich. If the debut from El Ahmadi is a glimpse of the future then maybe he would be a good choice. He certainly ran the show in the first half yesterday. Be good to see how he copes against better opposition. The other thing to consider is that some players do not play at their best when 'burdened' with the job. GG might be a future choice, he was a great captain in the youth/reserve teams. However, he must first establish his place in the first team.

GG for the future maybe. CC (love these initials games) was also a good captain of the reserves and youth. However I still think we should wait to see who else comes in. I agree that a CB or CM seems a more obvious choice for the armband but based on yesterday how many more midfielders do we need? So if we are looking to recruit a good player able to captain it may need to be a CB.

If he stays then yes...Noone else apart from Petrov who can lead us...The new guy El Ahmadi can be a candidate later in the season i think though.

just because el ahmadi had good game and seems a good player does this mean he should be captain? it doesn't make him a LEADER im not saying he shouldnt be captain but based on the fact he had a god game alone then no we want a vocal hard working respected player who leads by example and can gear the team up when the chips are down

If he can stay fit and has a good run of matches then Delph would be my choice.

Ciaran Clark has the potential to be an absolute superstar and is a leader. He has enough experience now. He should not be seen as a youth with potential. Throw him in, make him Captain and build the team around him. The likely scenario is this would initially overwhelm him, but it would build him as a player and a man quicker than anything. A little short term pain for massive long term gain. Whilst I hate using players from other clubs, especially those with baggage, as an example, I honestly believe he would then go on to be our Steven Gerard, John Terry, Tony Adams etc. These players have had terible controversies that have surrounded them. However they all became captains at a young age, it bought their loyalty and have been fabulous football leaders of their clubs. Make CC capatain, get him signed on a super long contract and make him a Villa leader for years to come. As Petrov is rightly club captain, it would be an ideal time to announce CC as the 'captain in waiting' to help relieve some of the initial pressure. It is not that there is a lack of serious options, more that this young man has the potential to be amongst the Villa greats and we need to assert his influence now. There is never a wrong time to do the right thing.

black_villan he sure looks like a leader to me, more of a leader than anyone in our current team.

Clark is another one who could do the job. Hope these young players get the games they need to gel and mould into a team. The quality is arguably there. Sadly, they haven't had a manager to exploit their potential. Until now?

voth -- Agree with a lot of your sentiments regarding Clark. However, if he and the other young players are going to get a chance to progress then it means a run of games. The fans might have to get used to poor results initially as they gain experience. If we are patient though the rewards long-term could be immense.

As I said VWRA, short term pain, long term gain. CC should not be a squad player, he is good enough and old enough now to load responsibility on to. It could be the making of him and the Villa and be PL's finest piece of work if he sees that potential as well.

Im not a fan of new players becoming captain straight away, they need time to settle and cannot instantly come in and lead players that have been here longer than them. I agree with voice that I always saw Clarke as a future captain and if he is to feature a lot and be in PLs starting 11 I would give the armband to him. If CC isnt going to be starting 11 then its between Given and Bent. Gabby didn't cut it for me as captain last season and I don't want to see Dunne or Collins wear it so that leaves Given and Bent. Not sure if Bents a leader but if he wants it and leads by example, why not? RVP didn't seem much of a leader but he did well as skipper of arsenal.

Lion Heart. Good comparison with Bent and RVP. The only thing I would have done different with the benefit of hindsight if I was Wenger would have been to give him the captaincy as a condition of him signing a long term contract. As it looks now that he is about to reward Wengers faith by getting the flock out of the Emirates. Ciaran Clark for me.

Sign of where we are and the current squad, no real heroes and no one who stands out for the captaincy(Stan apart, obviously), in fact I would of said no to Bent but having seen some of the comments above I can see why it could work and would prefer him than Given. My choice all along was and still is Ciaran Clark, definately a player who can be wiith us for years, who plays in a commanding position and undoubtably has ability now and further serious potential. He loves the club and knows it inside out and has grown up through the ranks as one of us and is already a level headed character who I feel would have the respect of his team mates who would back him and want to do well for him. We have the right gaffer to bed him in and bring him on, he is the future, Clark for captain!!!

Impressed he volunteered! Got to go Clark for me, Capitan at every level so far, why not first team...he showed in his first real run he wasn't afraid to tell the seniors what to do, so the armband would just make it official.

Ahmadi might not command the respect straight away, Bent goes missing n previous games way too much, pehaps being Captain he will come and help the team out more ? Given can't even command his box let alone a team, Gabby isn't captain material he had his shot last season and for me wasn't vocal enough or tried 110% too much hands on hips, GG far too young. To be honest really reviewing the situation I think Ahmadi would be the stand out choice, He welcomes the leadership, he likes being called the Gov'ner from previous clubs, he relishes in an important role. He can pass the ball, he can tackle, he can attack the ball and he runs all day, for me that is the kind of captain we need to inspire the rest of the lads and lead by example. I've heard good things from him and a lot of people i've spoken to reckon he has the potential to be the signing of the season. Who else have we really got ?

Tough one. Not keen on keepers beng captain but not sure with DB9 either. Though I like the way he stepped up and volunteered. I'd pass the job around during the friendlies and see who is best for the season from there.

FFS. The bloke scores tap-ins and is incapable of anything else. He is tactically inept and has no idea about life outside the 18 yard box. If he stays in that role, I hope Bent can improve and move on and this may give him more understanding of other duties and responsiblities. It will give him confidence but he's barely capable of tapping in and I think that the extra brain work will be too much for his simple mind. Would like to be proven wrong....
