Fitness & Style Are King In Pre Season

Paul Lambert has said his only concern this pre season is for the players to gain fitness, and gain the confidence to make mistakes when trying to play the right way - results are irrelevant.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the pre season kick off against Burton, Lambert reiterated that results were not the be all and end all for pre season, there were far more important things he wants to see from the team such as 'to get into a way of playing and get their confidence going.'

close up press conference

Sounds quite good doesn't it, as long as our senior centre halves don't get to pick the style!

'I never read too much into pre season games to be honest, it's nice to win but the main thing for me is to get the team fit and get them into a way of playing and get their confidence going and not be frightened by making mistakes. It's new, there's a freshness about it for them and they can go and express themselves. Once it starts for real that's when it matters.'

Paul continues to explain that he's had pre seasons where a game hasn't been lost, but the league campaign has started atrociously, whereas he's had very unsuccessful pre season results and started the league campaign brightly.

I get where he's coming from in results not really mattering but we all know a decent pre season under the belts does do a lot for confidence, and with the games we have set up we should be looking to win them and convincingly in most cases really.

West Ham however is different prospect...

'We will go down there and try to win, that's important. It's a really tough game but I am not going to go there and sit on the back foot really. We have to go there on the front foot and the best way to do that is to try and attack.'

Attack - what's that?

Well essentially pre-season in for just that, results are irrelevant but it's always nice to get a win.

Yep, friendly results are ok, but it's a case of everyone getting a game so Paul can see them in action, trying things out and above all reaching his required fitness levels. Attack?..... now that does ring a bell..... but it's going back a bit.......
