Guzan Won't Be Making Up The Numbers

Paul Lambert has said returning Brad Guzan will get the chance to challenge Shay Given, and he hasn't been brought in to simply make up the numbers.

Guzan is in the process of finalising a new deal that will see his return to Villa Park after leaving the other month as his contract ended, and Lambert has said the 27 year old will be on an equal footing with our Republic of Ireland international as they battle it out for the No1 jersey.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Lambert confirmed the deal was nigh on done, and he talked about Brad's potential involvement on his return.

'It's near. I've watched Brad and some of his games when he was in the team and he was excellent. I know he's always had that stigma of being the No2 but when you come back at the start of the season nobody knows what's going to happen and it depends on whoever does well. Brad played very well and maybe he found himself a bit unlucky to be back out.'

It's certainly a chord that will strike with fans, as a large number thought his performances did not warrant Shay Given automatically coming back into the side when fit. You would also assume that Brad wouldn't entertain returning unless he believed Lambert would give him a fair crack of the whip this time round.

Nothing worse than people thinking your a No2 :o

Fair does to PL. Goalkeeper is the only position where you can't fit another in, like a midfielder for example, so it's up to Brad and Shay to fight it out. Good healthy competition, thats what it's all about.

Really glad he's coming back, there's no other available keepers out there at the moment that i'd rather have, and if he can get get himself ahead of Given then fair play to him! I always thought he was given a bit of a hard time here, with being taken out of the team for Given despite good performances, and missing out on that carling cup final a couple of years ago despite playing in every game leading up to it
callum_ws
yes callum that was abit harsh and unfair to be honest he was what about 25 then so in goal keeper terms relatively young it must have broke the poor lad, but if i be honest i havent seen anything from him that makes me think woow what an amazing keeper not as of yet anyway !
black_villian
But black_villian have you seen anything to say he isnt. For me he had a bad game where a team bullied him at every corner but he came back vs Stoke and showed he has manned up! He is a good shot stopper who I have not seen make many mistakes which is all I would want from a keeper.
Chelt Villan
@Chelt Villan dont get me wrong mate i am not saying he is a bad keeper but he hasnt caught my eye for example the 1st time i saw given, joe hart and schzney (the aresnal keeper dont know how to spell it) i could see right away that they were top quality keepers but ive seen guzan a few times and i havent seen anything that makes me think he can take givens spot

Lambo must have been watching the Euros as closely as the rest of us. Not Shay's finest hour...
