Villa Sign Matt Lowton

Villa Sign Matt Lowton

Paul Lambert has been a busy boy! Welcome Matthew Lowton.

23 year old Lowton joins us from Sheffield United on a four year deal and as you can imagine he's delighted with a dream move to the Premier League.

He's predominantly a right back apparently, but can play anywhere in the back four as well as in midfield.

Speaking to the Official Site as the deal was announced, Paul Lambert described Lowton as 'a bright prospect with the potential to be a really good player for us.'

'Matthew is a really talented young player who brings a lot of things that can really benefit the club. He's hungry to succeed and to go further in the game, both of which are attributes we want at this club.'

Lambert adds that there's no pressure on Lowton, so I'm assuming we'll see him start in the second string as he finds his way at the club and then start appearing from the bench as time goes by.

Lowton himself said:

'It's every boys' childhood dream to play in the Premier League and it was one of mine. This opportunity is fantastic and I thank the manager for giving it to me. Hopefully I can repay the faith that he's shown in me and keep going at a higher level.'

Lowton also talked about the difference in quality when being shown around Bodymoor Heath and the facilities.

It's lovely to hear players appreciate what we have, would be even more lovely now if the team can back up our off pitch successes with some success on the pitch.

Lowton has progressed through United Academy system and even has experience of Hungarian football following a loan spell to Ferencvaros.

Young, hungry talent from leagues below us instead of overpaid journeymen...I'm liking this already!

Know nothing about him, but I'm sure Paul Lambert does and that's good enough for me! I've seen some fans saying they're a bit "underwhelmed" by the signing, but isn't this exactly the kind of signing we expected from PL? How much money have we got left? There's 2 or 3 more to come in apparently.

Know nothing either SJH but I want us to take the talent from leagues below so spot on for me. Being suggested it's a £3m fee aswell but no confirmation on that from either club I think.

Really pleased we are looking at young players who are desperate for the opportunity that our club presents them with and feel they will be well supported and given time and opportunity to flourish by the fans...Fed up of over paid, over priced and over hyped players constantly dissapointing and would rather give this route a chance. As long as we keep a certain blend of experience and proven quality then I think it will be a good balance, and we are in a good position at the minute after the last 2 seasons to freshen things up and allow certain players and generally the squad to get confidence and impress, cause after last year in particular anything will be an improvement and we will be better regardless...!

I hope the kid comes in and does well. I find it hard to believe we would pay £3m for an unknown player. My guess is its half that but could rise that high if he does well. If he does well then £3m is great business anyway. Also great to be moving early in the tfr market!! I though it opened around 28th August and then for 3 days in Jan?

p.s the last young untried full back who played their previously, whom we gave the opportunity to play turned out to be alright, so here's hoping this one follows suit...!

Big step up from 'the third division' as some of us still call it. Let's hope Lambo has got this right.

Certainly keeping his eye on the budget is our PL. No complaints at all though....... right, who's next Brahimi ?

James on the forum has said it could be 800K which could be an absolute steal.

David Platt, Mark Delaney, Gareth Barry, James Milner (first time around), Ashley Young all seemed to step up from the lower leagues ok. Dwight Yorke stepped up from a beach. When will people learn that the skill in the modern game is spotting the talent early. Any mug can blow the cash on proven talent. A club of our size benefits from finding a bargain and moving it on for big bucks. Some players you can keep when they establish themselves, others move themselves on, that is life. We have got to stop buying middle of the road players on big salaries at the back end of their careeer. It is that madness that kills clubs and it seems that PL understands that as well. Lowton may work. He may not. But I guarantee he will be better value than Luke Young, Beye and Shorey combined. They cost £12m in transfer fees and £20M in wages and what return did we get???

Also he has scored 10 goals in 78 appearances. That is some going for a full back. Does anyone know if he takes the penalties or the free kicks? Gabi averages a goal every 4 games, Lowton every 8. Interesting.
