Peter Whittingham Coming Home To Villa?

Peter Whittingham Coming Home To Villa?

I don`t usually deal in whispers but the news is very quiet and I thought this would at least make an interesting talking point!

Apparently now Cardiff City have bought Mutch, some Cardiff fans are putting 2+2 together and the whisper (one that I heard a while back to be fair) is that Peter Whittingham might be making a return to Aston Villa.

I stress, there isn`t a massive amount of substance on this, I`m not claiming a massive exclusive!!! Of course if it ends up right then I will call for the freedom of the city and want to be pulled around in a gold chariot (but to be fair, I want that anyway.. services to talking rubbish on the interweb... I`m surprised I`ve not been beheaded, ahem... I mean knighted yet. Maybe if I avoid my taxes? I feel this is a fair digression... what was the article about again?)

Whittingham was named Player of the Year at the Cardiff City Supporters' Trust annual awards ceremony in April.

He played 48 games scoring 12 league goals (and 7 cup goals)

The season before he got 11 (and 4) and the season before that was a stunner as he bagged 22 league goals (and 2 cup goals)

I remember being gutted when we sold him, I`d take him back I think! He`s developed well and we desperately need goals from midfield.

He was linked to West Ham and the bluebirds (are they the red birds now?) manager Malky Mackay said on Wales Online: 'I totally believe Peter Whittingham will be a Cardiff City player next season. He has only just signed a new contract and he has two years left on that, so I don`t expect him to be going anywhere."

Would the lure of Villa prize him away?

Would you want him?

Where did I leave my car keys?

All questions I can`t currently answer.

I`m told from (a made up) source that Peter`s favourite colour is lime and he`s always fancied glowing in the dark.

Coincidence? You decide.

Please no! Up there with Martin Carruthers and Didier Agathe as one of the worst players I've ever seen in a Villa shirt. Yes, he's OK at Chumpionship level - and long may it continue.

He certainly knows where the goals are. He's developed into a very useful player and I for one would welcome him back. He'd be useful slotting into LB going forward and bagging a few goals. I'm sure the lure of the Premiership and Villa could turn his head.

I think PW has developed a long way since leaving Villa. Looks very composed on the ball, has leadership qualities, good left boot. I think he'd cope fine in the Prem. Having said that, I think he'd cost too much money compared to what can be found abroad currently, particularly with the strong pound:euro ratio.

Agree with those who say how much of an improved player he is plus he can take a decent free kick these days but depends on price. A lot has been said about buying overseas but lets be carefull Baloban springs to mind and Baros made his name in one euros championship and did nothing after.

@ onlyteaminthemids, how old was Whittingham when he left Villa??? it has been a surprise for a few years that no Prem club has taken another chance on signing him. he has been one of the outstanding performers in the Championships for a few seasons, so why not? players do develop at different stages, as it seems that Whittingham was a slightly slow starter. also you have to consider where you are as a club and what funds that Lambert has. also Lambert has a very impressive record in picking up lower level players and seeing them prove to be a great success

Can't be find a new home? How old is he now? Not the best transfer i could think of.

I know, lets bring back Guy Whittingham while were at it shall we???? I know this is only an eeny weeny tiny rumour but come on........Another squad player at best. Not what we need in my ever so humble opinion. We need strong 1st teamers who are better than what we have already and I dont think he is.
26/06/2012 11:13:00
How much did Newcastle pay for Tiote??? Thats the kind of player we need. Is Makelele still kicking about somewhere???
26/06/2012 11:18:00
Whittingham is 27 and left Villa in January 07. We need a left sided player and a free kick specialist. He is much improved since he went to Cardiff, as proven during their cup runs where he didn't look out of place against premier league opposition. The price would be all important if he still has 2 yrs left on his contract, but for £3m or less, and fitting into the wage structure, why not? Had anyone heard of Anthony Pilkington before last season? PL has a habit of picking up lads who can fit his style at the right price. This return home could be a smart move all round, and I wouldn't mind at all.

Looks like it's just me any you Gibbo, fighting a lonely battle against hatred, injustice, and below par players. Whitto reminds me of Downing without the pace - ie 1 footed, no heart and no conviction. Yes PW's eventually matured into a decent Championship player. In my view though, that's the best he'll ever be. Perhaps these are the type of players we'll be linked with now and will need to get our heads around it, but will be tough to take. If it's got to be lower league stuff, would prefer to take a £1m punt on that Redmond kid at the scum, looks like he WILL be a player one day.
