Should Shay Given Stay? Poll Results

Following a bit of transfer talk with regards to Shay Given Vital Villa asked:

Would you replace Shay Given

For me, with any player, the key is only to replace if you are replacing with better. If not, why bother? He`s a mighty fine keeper and I personally think he kept us up last season, so happy for him to remain IF he wants to.

He had a stinker at Euro 2012, then again with the exception of Keith Andrews all the Irish inc the manager had shockers. I still think Shay will give us (the Villa) a good season so no I would not sell him. COTVABU
irish villa
He has had his day, injury prone, unfit and can't command his area ..... get rid. UTV
astonmilan
Wouldn't take any notice of the Euros, he's still a great keeper, a couple of decent defenders in front of him and we'll be impenetrable.

Shay has a history of making more mistakes for his country than he does for his club

He had a stinker at the Euros? No wonder Irish Villa, no offence mate but he had so much to do due to Ireland being so shocking...He still to date has pulled off the save of the tournament against Spain...love how people just say 'get rid' like he has done something wrong, give players some respect ffs. He was by far player of the season last year.
P.Avfc
Agreed P.Avfc, some of the saves he made contributed to some of those bore draws we managed. These draws could have been defeats and we could be in the fizzy pop league by now!
juddy
I don't think he kept us up last season. On the contrary, I think he almost relegated us. We conceived the most goals from corners last season and that's primarily because he was not stepping off his line to collect the balls and was not commanding his defence. The isolated instintive save here and there would happen to cover up for his mistakes. I have no idea why we released Brad Guzan.

Villalfred
Sorry, Villalfred. I wholeheartedly disagree! Season before last we were hardly any good at defending set pieces and crosses. Most of the blame stops at Dunne and Collins' door.

100% keep for me. If he had a stinker at the euro's then fine but he only played in three games. If he had a bad three games in the EPL nobody would say much, just that he's lost a bit of form and will pick it back up because he's class. All great players have dips and Shay is no different. He kept us up for sure and he'll be a massive asset for us again this coming season. There's plenty of other Villa players I'd rather see the back of. UTV!

I think Shay has his faults but he also has strengths as well. He is still a top keeper and my question to those saying get rid would be and bring in who? realistically.
AVbornandbred
Have to agree with villalfred. Those who understand the goalkeeping art will know the difference between a keeper who makes a few saves for the camera and one who prevents the need for the saves in the first place. Given makes some great saves, but they are often due to a lack of command of his box. Simple stats show that we concede to many goals from within our six yard box (more than any other team). It is absolutely pointless making a save for the cameras that most other keepers would routinely make if you undo your good work by conceeding a goal every time the ball hits the 6 yard box. Get Foster immediately.

I personally think we should be replacing the back four before the keeper, but hey what do I know lol

astonmilan - how many games did Shay miss last season, y'know, being as unfit as you say he is? Was it 5, 6 games?? Pretty sure younger keepers in the league were more injury-prone than he was! Totally agree with Fear; why sell if we can't replace with better? Who exactly is there that is better than Shay whom we could realistically afford on our transfer and salary budgets?? All very well saying get rid, but in favour of who?? Ruddy?! Gilks?? Give(n) me Shay for another year over either of those two any day.
BristolVillan
So the defence isn't too blame from the goals conceded from Corners? No?
P.Avfc
pavfc. The defence is to blame as well? But the command of that defence (or lack of command)comes from the keeper. BristolVillan. Foster???
