Barry Bannan Says Make Or Break Season For Him

Well Barry Bannan sounds like he is focussed at the moment. Hope so. Personally I`m not sure he`ll make it but would be happy to be proved wrong, especially if he can develop off the pitch as well!

He told the Birmingham Mail that he knows this coming season is crucial for his Villa career.

The 22-year-old midfielder said:

"It`s probably make or break for me this season if I`m being honest. It`s a big, big season. I`m 22 now and I`ve got to be playing so hopefully I can have a strong pre-season and show the gaffer what I`m about. My aim this season is to be one of the main players in this team."

Our latest poll asks your opinion on Bananaman

Barry Bannan Profile.

He says there is far more to come from him and adds, "I think I`ve shown it in flashes but not quite enough over a period of time."

Bannan hand up

Difficult to judge any of them on last season isn`t it? But great to see that he is hungry for it. Hopefully this is more than talk. I also hope he realises that not every pass has to be a 'Hollywood pass` ... some can just be simple as long as we keep possession.

He`s also spoken on www.avfc.co.uk saying there is more to come from the team in general.

There has to be. There will be no more hiding places in my opinion, if they don`t perform, Lambert (I hope) just won`t play them.

And on himself, 'I've got two more years left, so I've still got plenty of time. But I want to be one of the main players this season.'

Bannan Running

I think by 24 you will know, 22 he (and the others) are still learning. Not sure fans show much patience with the younger players, one bad game and some write them off.

I'm one of the 'unsures'. But hope he does make it. Who in their right mind wouldn't? He has come through our system and is one of the latest in a long line of potential stars. We needs some of these potentials to make the grade and move forward. Maybe with McDonald gone these former 'kids' will feel more of a need to stand on their own two feet. Height is not a problem - ask Scholes - so its all down to desire, skill and mental approach. Good luck Barry.

Personally I think he is crap and wouldnt be bothered if he never played for us again. Iv seen nothing to say he will step up. Just my opinion, but hes not as good as he thinks he is. Gary Gardener on the other hand does look like he could step up, and with a run of games could have the potential to be our very own Stevie G.
GibboVilla
lol Fear one bad game and we write them off. A couple of decent turn outs in the reserves and many hail them as the next Messi. I hope he proves me wrong but I don't rate Bannan at all
AVbornandbred
I think given a better playing style Bannan looks a good player, we will have a better idea at the end if this year, but personally I rate him.
ormskirk
I quite like him as a player and think he has real potential. question is now whether he can knuckle down and concentrate on his football above all else, otherwise he will be moved out and probably slip down the levels.
oxfordspur
Passing yes. Pace, height, strength, guile, tackling, dribbling, attitude, vision No.
Villan444
you might aswell add passing in your NO category 444 :)
GibboVilla
You said it all Villan44, passing YES! The trouble has been getting a performance out of those he passed to. It takes 2 to Tango and 11 to play proper football. So give me another 10 that can pass, no matter their height.
Winsforvilla
I think he can make it too ,good potential along with Gardener ,Weiman & Carruthers . He shouldn't be judged on last season as he probably got a clout around the earhole if he dared to try an attacking pass !! See how he goes this season. I'm very wary of writing youngsters off ie Cahill Whittingham etc
AstonBilla
agree AVbornandbred! Too much pressure on some of them, like Gary Gardner, many seemed to think he'd just float over the pitch as the messiah. Not as easy as that is it?! Got to have patience!
The Fear
crucial point Ox, time for him to make up his mind basically.
The Fear
You're poor Barry, you're a flyboy out drinking till midnight on weekdays, you'll never be a 'main' player ..... pack yer bags and take Gabby, Fonz and Delph with you. New era, new hungry players needed. UTV
astonmilan
Too lightweight. Easily knocked off the ball to be a PL player IMHO
Pride of Lions
Can't write him off yet, the last 2 seasons have been ridiculous, and it's been hard to judge any of the younger lads, and I agree with WinsforVilla, Bannan can pass it all he wants but if other players aren't on the same page and are not making runs and anticipating things then we could have Iniesta in the team and even he would look rubbish.
Stephen Jay Hawkings
Some really didn't see the defensive performances he put in last season did they, just remember the passes nobody else anticipated. As being arrogant, I'd say him pointing out he hasn't been consistent enough or done enough yet in the shirt would say to me he's pretty humble after previous indiscretions. He must be showing the right attitude off the pitch for the club to keep him involved in the events they do.
mike_field
Think he has been quite honest really and correct in his assessment, in that it is very definately time to make the impact he feels he can or he will more than likely drift off to the lower leagues and throw a couple of Scotland appearances on to his CV. Difficult to really judge most these last couple of seasons and certainly last, but Bannan really needs to follow this up to give himself any chance and realise what a wonderful opportunity that presents itself this year under lambert. After his misdemeaners off the field he really needs to put an end to his pursuits away from football with immediate effect and channel all he's got into giving it one big push. I am not sure it will happen, but wish him well and would like him to show us all that he can make it at our fantastic club. Over to you Barry!!!
marcobavfc
mike .... you should try visiting a club in the city such as Bambu Bar and see him strutting around ........ you'd change your mind, he's a proper 'Big Time Charlie' ... more into the lifestyle than the football.
astonmilan
Shame when they think they have made it before they have. Hear all sorts about a few not exactly behaving great out and about. If they can turn it on ON the pitch, maybe they can also grow up a little off it and all will be fine! It really is a simple choice, if you want to be a great, you have to work for it. They don't need to be saints but...........
The Fear
as much as I dislike his off field antics my judgement is purely based on his performances since he came into the team. Too many hollywood passes, no awareness of players around him, no pace.
AVbornandbred
Villa444 how can someone have passing ability yet no vision?...that doesn't make sense
Steve64k
Keep him for one more season and let PL decide if he's good enough I say!
AdzVilla11
I recall a few of his team mates saying that he is one of the most gifted players with the ball at his feet. Him and Ireland should be thriving together and trying to form some sort of partnership. Sort of like a cheap mans Xavi and Iniesta ! We'd need one hell of a midfield rock to allow both of them to play in the same team though
son_of_cher
Team mates saying he is one of the most gifted Players is exactly the Problem. It's when youngsters start believing their own hype that it all goes wrong. My Dad told me that he once overheard his teachers describe him as a genius, from that day forth he thought he no longer needed to put the effort in, Why should he if he is so naturally talented. In the end he failed his exams. It doesn't matter how much natural talent you have, it you don't put in the effort you will get nowhere.
Adam Deuce
Bannan does not have enough in his locker to make it in the premier league in my opinion size lightweight errr Mezzi end of argument,he is simply not good enough. As to off the field at most clubs the older pros show them the way at ours the older ones join in ! Dunne Collins need to be moved on.But my guess is that Lambert will sort them out happy to let him decide which youngsters will make it.
Merlin128777
Why oh why are we writing off the younger players who have NOT had a chance to show what they can do under a good manager. I agree with AdzVilla11 give him and all the other young players another season. I also have to say that at times I have seen some signs that he does have something.
villa@herts
He can pass Steve but doesn't know when and where to. There's a time and a place, not every time. Vision is about making the killer pass not just having the ability to hoof it.
