Brad Guzan To Be Tempted Back To Villa?

Villa were linked to John Ruddy from Norwich earlier, see: Villa after another Ruddy keeper!

Within that report, the Mirror claimed that Lambert might attempt to bring back Brad Guzan.

I've now just noticed on Vital Ipswich: Villa To Thwart Town's USA Keeper Hopes which states the same.

Apparently Paul Jewel was after Guzan but Villa are now attempting to bring him back.

Hull have also been linked.

Sinning Brad would make good sense, I would think signing a keeper has come a priority having seeing how poor Shay was at Euro 2012. Brad would make good business, I would think he will only re-sign if he is guaranteed first team football. COTVABU

Please let this be true, we should sell Given and start with Brad, he will improve with every game he plays and is better in the air . After seeing Given play for Ireland I think now is right to sell

I think re-signing Guzan is good sense, if true. Last season Given was terrific as a shot stopper but he is getting older and has injury issues. I doubt he was 100 per cent fit in the Euros. No-one should be guaranteed first team football, a place in the first team should be awarded on form and I think that is what PL will do. If Guzan is given a fair chance to be number one he has to be cheaper than buying Ruddy or Butland.

Not sure about Guzan. Never really felt confident when he was playing BUT his appearances probably coincided with one of our best runs of last season! Plus Shay did not cover himself in glory, though it could be because he was behind a poor defence. Mmm poor defence who was the CB? They both did well in qualification but did not look fit for purpose in Ukraine. Glad I'm not a manager.

He wasn't fit in the Euros, he hardly trained which is why he looked sluggish, but as said elsewhere I'd have Guzan back.

Happily have Guzan back but not sure as No 1..which is what he wants/needs...I still think Shay is a top keeper despite the Euros, but if we were looking to replace him (I doubt we are) it should be Ben Foster we go for IMO

I agree with krfeskivilla, I'd have him back but only as a No.2 again. Not good enough to replace Given imo.

Echo most of these on here - a good no.2, but probably not a long term no. 1. After the Euros, though, we're hopefully looking for TWO new keepers...

Villa conceded more goals from within the 6 yard box than any other team last season. Ireland kept conceding goals from free kicks scored by oponents in the 6 yard box. Coincidence? I think not. I banged on about this last season. Shays handling is usually faultless. He makes good saves for the TV and this endears him to fans who do not understand the art of being a good goalkeeper. His command of his 6 yard box is woeful. Brad is a better keeper than Shay. The two goals Ireland conceded against Italy were routine crosses into the box that good keepers would have come and dealt with. Shay wouldn't come off his line and take responsibility. So when the ball goes in the net the header and shot were unsaveable. But the the header and shot should never have happened. . . . . and wouldn't have if Ireland had a keeper prepared to command his defence and box. He is injury prone. We need two new keepers imho.

I think Guzan is wasted on the bench, he has parts of his game that need improving but I think he deserves to be a 1st choice keeper.

Interesting stats VOTH< I didn't know that. I would like to see the stats for when Friedel was in goal. He was glued to the line.

I am a huge fan of Shay Given, but admit he had a very poor euros and looked injured to me. I wouldn't disagree with voth about his abilty (or lack of) to command his area, but a fit Given is an asset to any premier league team imo. Guzan has never let the club down as a number 2, and I would be happy to see him back, but I would like Wayne Hennessy for that role. There was talk today of Norwich trying to buy Butland from b-lose, with PL bidding for Ruddy. Lets wait and see, could be interesting times ahead between the sticks.

Guzan did well when he was in between the sticks when Given was injured, but the problem I have is his size. To me he's not big enough to boss his box, to mix it when coming for centres etc. Think Ruddy would be ideal, he's tall, athletic and a good keeper as he proved last season.

Like others above always felt Given fails to command the six yard box but is a great shot stopper . That being said the Euros are a poor way to judge a keeper playing behind a defence that dont play together week in week out even Hart & Czech have been made to look ordinary. But would agree that another decent keeper would help not convinced that Guzan is the one though. good shout on Hennessy madrish he does make errors but hes young enough to learn off Given and has a presence in the area.
