Lambert's Words Are Music To Gabby Ears

Gabby Agbonlahor knows the fans are buzzing after the appointment of Paul Lambert, and he says the players are aswell after listening to the new man in his press conference.

Speaking to the Official Site Gabby said he believed that exciting times were ahead under Paul Lambert and the style of play he will want to introduce:

'I think it's great - for the fans especially. They wanted Paul to come to the club and it's come true. This will put a smile on their faces and hopefully that can continue throughout the season. I think if you ask any fan they favour us playing attacking football, it creates a real buzz around the place. For the manager to be saying that we need to bring those things back, I think every fan can be excited.'

Addressing last season, Agbonlahor continued:

'The fans want to see us in that top half of the league and playing attacking football, maybe in some games it won't come off but they'll still be behind the team if we play the way they want us to play. We've had a couple of tough seasons, it was almost heartbreaking for us last term and I think a lot of the players will be coming back wanting to prove that we are a better side than we showed.'

The question is, who do we give the chance to do that to? Some of them clearly don't deserve it.

I think Gabby deserves a chance to be played in an attacking team, playing in a defensive sitting back team is not going to get the best out of any strikers, under Lambert we can build towards a better style of play and with a bit of luck we may surprise a few people by the end of the season, top 7 is not impossible Spurs are going to lose a few of there stars and unceratinty about there manager, Newcsatle will struggle with the demands of the europa league as Ashley has said he will not increase wages to compensate a bigger squad, Liverpool will struggle adapting to Rodgers, yep you have heard it here 1st ;)

Anyone would think the players had nothing to do with the disappointments of the last two years. Not me guv seems to be the message. Having seen the coaches trying to get them motivated during games, I don't quite believe it.

So if he stays, we may see a few goals off him before Xmas then..................

agree Gordonsleftboot. Players got off scott free for two seasons. Now? NO MORE. Shut up or put up. Would love to see the sulkers, underachievers and those who clearly are all words and no action either leave or start to play as they bloody well should on their wages and pay back to the fans the support they have been given. Big season for Gabby at Villa if he stays, which he prob will unless MON comes in I'd think. Up to him which way his career goes now. 9 goals in two seasons, no matter how much you dislike the manager or how much you believe yourself to be out of position, is not enough for a player of that quality.

Look forward to seeing who Lambert decides to keep and who he pushes outward. Hope Gabby stays and fits into a more attacking team and hope whether they like each other or not, him and Bent find a way to compliment each other for the 90mins during a game (and I don't mean 'nice hair mate' compliments!)

gabby has just about annoyed me enough now with his performances... his contribution is so poor its untrue. we lose bent who arguably runs less and tackles less and his loss was huge for us. gabby should have been able to do a job when bent was gone and it simply didn't happen.. he can't score at all and if gabby was that good... he could have easily filled in bents role. it didn't happen and he didn't score at all when bent got injured. if someone comes for him we should sell him

Time gabby moved on, he is taking up the squad number and wages of a decent player. Same with Delph, Dunne, Collins and Warnock. Delfoneuso gone too. I would like to see Hutton given a chance as he showed vast improvement in the latter stages of the campaign and after all hadn't played competitive football for two years, same with Ireland and bring back Makoun and give him a chance to prove himself. I for one hope he stays and that Lambert gets the best out of him. In a decent side, in his correct position and injury free Gabby could be superb, he just needs a couple of goals to get his confidence up.

I wouldn't mind if he stayed, to give him one last season that he can cut it as a top Premier League striker, but if we got a decent offer in for him (7mill+) I'd let him go. He can't just blame the managers, because whenever he has managed to get a one on one with the keeper in the past 2 years his finishing has been woeful!

Not convinced he should stay. Best he's ever done is 13 goals in a league season. That was with Young and Downing as a supply line. 5 last season, 3 the season before, maybe he needs a fresh challenge.

60k a week for 5 goals?? makes me sick... he should go or take a massive pay cut to 10k a week

I think, as Villa fans, we tend to afford him far too much leeway. Technically, he is weak even by English standards and his shooting is woeful to say the least. Heskey is loathed and mocked by fans for his pathetic goals record despite players enjoying playing with him and managers being inclined to play him for his physical attributes and ability to hold up play etc. But, strikers are judged on how many goals they score. Gabby can run fast... that's it. He will never be capable of scoring the goals to keep a team in the premiership (us staying up was certainly nothing to do with him last season), and he will never be capable of scoring the goals to take a team into Europe and compete in European competition - so what does he really offer us? If someone (O'Neil) offers 6million for him, we would be fools not to take it - his value is only going to depreciate season by season

All these demands of which players should go/stay are making me chuckle. As if we have enough money (and players come to that) to be making those choices. It can not be underestimated the influence a manager has on the whole 'feel' of a football club. I understand the argument about how much they are payed (personally I would have every player in the league on a 5K a week basic and then paid bonuses at the end of the season dependent on appearances and final league position, but that is another conversation). For me the slate is wiped clean for every player, bar none, including Hutton. In the grand scheme of things he has several transfer windows to build his team. As everybody is saying, he must be given time. But in the next breath everybody is then saying bomb this player out, bomb that player out. Get a grip ffs. Let Lambert look at them and make his decisions over the next 2 or 3 transfer windows and get away from this 'it must all happen yesterday mentality'. Some players join a club and it happens for them straight away (Dublin, Saunders, Platt, Laursen, McGrath etc). Some take a time to settle. That may be the culture, the manager, the style of football, personal problems (it can happen no matter how much you are paid). Players such as Ken McNaught, JPA, Dwight, people were even saying Ashely was too lightweight for months fall into this category. Some players simply change overnight because they have a manager that knows how to manage them. The slate is clean. Lets stop moaning about players and start supporting the club again. We should all be excited about the new season, but some just can't wait to gripe and whinge. Lose the negativity. Support the club. And stop slagging our own players off. It is a wonder we can attract any players if any of them read sites like these. UTV. Prepared. The 19th Minute.

Can we all remind ourselves of a certain player under the name of TORRES, He didn't score for nearly a season in an attacking team, and it was all down to confidence, Ok granted Gabby is no Torres and hasn't got the skill, actually if anything saying that should make my argument easier, If Torres couldn't score because of confidence what chance in hell has Gabby got ? atleast Gabby assist quite a lot, Look at Downing last season didn't manage one assist or goal and Gabby had i think about 7-9 assists. Give the man some confidence roar his name and with Paul Lambert in charge i'm sure he can make Gabby the twice the player he has ever been. Come on if Paul can get Holt from league 1 all the way and be successful in the Premiership i think soon we wil see Gabby smashing around the 15 mark which I believe is totally fine. There's not many clubs out there with two 20 season goal scorers so just remind yourself of that and don't expect 20 from Gabby.

Once Lambert makes his decisions, then slates are wiped clean voiceoftheholte, in the meantime it is more than up for debate as to whether they will be of use judging by their previous records and attitudes. It isn't everyone saying one thing, then everyone saying something else, it is us fans debating agreeing and disagreeing, I don't think any need to get a grip mate, not at all. What the heck do you think these sites are for if not for debating?! We pays our money, we can have an opinion.

Agree KciN because he is a Villa fan I think he gets much more leeway than others.

agreed villahippo that is all that is asked, just give 100%. Don't sulk around the pitch like you aren't interested (that goes for a few players). I hope that Lambert can ship some out and then get the others doing what they should, giving their all for 90 mins on the pitch. Not too much to ask for on their wages is it really mate?

It was more his attitude for me villa 4 ever plus the sulky family tweets I was being updated about. If he can re-find the interest and his form and start to progress again, there will be no argument from me.

We have to agree to disagree on this one then Fear :o) Mike if you are saying ship out the players who disrespected the club then how is Paul McGrath an all time legend? He is my favourite all time player, but on many occasions couldn't play because he was plastered. There is not a lot more disrespectful than preferring a pint to playing for the Villa!! I like these forums and they can be great platforms for debate and protest, as they were last season to get rid of the manager. However the negativity and slagging off of our own is embarrassing. You can call it debate if you want, but they reflect the attitudes on the terraces and does not help the club attract players.

Interesting stuff VOTH / Fear. Gotta say that without opinion and debate then even footballers wouldn't choose a club - it'd just be a roll of the dice. It can't all be positive and if it weren't for negative opinion and honesty then McLeish would still be here. I for once don't want all the fans to do an OLEARY and keep saying "they're a great bunch of lads" when what they actually mean is: Gabby is moody and displays none of the Petrov leadership skills and determination on the pitch - but boy can he run fast. Dunne is a liability but he tries bloody hard. Anyway, the clear message is that Villa want honest, hard working, skilful players who want to earn their money! And that's no bad message, on here or anywhere else.

Gabby could have gone for the money when he was hotstuff under MON instead he was unwavering in his loyalty to Villa something few have shown over the years. Please someone name me a player other than Given who performed well under our previous manager and was willing to play wilst carrying injuries. think we owe the lad another season and repay his loyalty with ours. Yes I Know there is little room for sentiment in football but remenber he was at his best when he had the crowd behind him, and to be honest I think we as fans sulked as much as he did under the previous administration (understanderbly) .
