AVFC Transfer Talk - Two Linked Outwards

The Telegraph says that QPR will bid £3million for Shay Given this week.

Although he`s 36, I can`t see us letting him go can you? Not unless Paul Lambert decides he wants to return to Norwich for John Ruddy I guess.

saving

The report says he is just 12 months into a 5 year contract. His contract ends 30.06.2016 for Villa.

Would he want to move to QPR? I know he was keen to move to Villa last summer and had had chances to go elsewhere.

I think this will prove to be a non story.

Meanwhile, The Mirror say that Villa would let Stephen Ireland go for just £4million.

The paper says, The midfield schemer Ireland is already looking for the exit door.

Schemer? Blimey, they don`t hold back do they?!

Hmm after last nights display I felt given looked ordinary. Two of the goals hill fault. Dunne was just terrible, he has to go
Villaininthemerde
Id let Ireland go for £4m, We could get 2 players for his wage who actually want to be here.
son_of_cher
Given was great for us last season. However there are some decent keepers available. Ben Foster for example. Robert Green is on a free (and he is a decent keeper). Kuschak (however you spell it) and Paul Robinson will be looking to move on. Would be very reluctant to let Shay go UNLESS we were offered silly money because he COULD be replaced by a younger model. Unsure about Stephen Ireland. So much natural talent but does he want it badly enough? Too much money to early.

Given was our player of the season last year as he was our only form of defence for most of it!. No good on crosses and prone to errors of judgement - if we could get Ruddy then i'd let him go
griffgriff
Ireland could excell in a role just of the strikers under Lambert in an attacking style he plays, so for £4million i just don't see how we could replace him with any experianced player we should be looking to add in midfield IMO, Given should not leave he has just signed for us, but if either were sold would i worry nah in Lamber i trust! UTV!

If he wants to go, well yes, I suppose, but not for as little as 4m. Otherwise, no way. He'll play even better under PL and he didn't have a bad season last season under Idiot.
Pride of Lions
Given was our best player last season and Ireland voted player of teh season so unless they want t go then I'd not be looking to get rid of them.

I differ to many as I believe the reason we conceded so many goals from set pieces and more crucially from inside the 6 yard box, is that Given lacks command of his box. His handling is excellent. The shot stopping (which looks good and tends to get the plaudits and give the impression of being a good keeper) is also very good. However a keepers role is also to prevent shots by commanding his box. Given has more saves to make because he doesn't go and claim balls that the really good keepers do. Simple mathematics show that if he faces 10 shots and makes 5 great saves then he conceded 5 goals. But if he were to command his box and come and claim the ball on just half of those occasions, before there was a shooting, chance then the goals conceded would also reduce by half. His style of goalkeeping isn't going to change and is the reason that none of the really big clubs have ever gone for him. He is getting older and has shown a tendency to be susceptible to injury. This will not get better with age. Personally if we could get £3M for him and get Foster for about £5M then we should do the deal asap.

Agree with son of cher about Ireland's wages paying for two others, but would give Lambert a go with him till Jan before off loading.
Madirish
Shay looks injured, and there is no doubting his ability if fully fit. We do need a long term replacement who is good enough now if needed. Wayne Hennessy gets my vote.
Madirish
Given has hardly trained for the Republic, no wonder he looks sluggish. That said the Sparky Marky rumours aren't going away - third time the mainstream press have mentioned it and the details remain the same, so it could just be rehash?
mike_field
What about Craig Gordon??? lost his way at Sunderland and will no doubt be looking to prove many people wrong. Big, strong, and commands his box. Also on a free, i believe???
GibboVilla
gibbo. Injury prone but not a bad shout.
