Four Players Linked! AVFC Press Transfer Talk

Four Players Linked! AVFC Press Transfer Talk

Matt Law at The Mirror seems to think that Paul Lambert wants two Canaries!

The report links us to both Grant Holt and also defender Daniel Ayala.

He also says Leeds Robert Snodgrass and Blackpool striker Matt Phillips are on the list.

As have a few other reports, he suggests the transfer pot is around £20million and Lambert has already given our CEO Paul Faulkner a list of players he wants. It appears he wants 4-5 and a similar amount could well be on the way out. (Lambert Looking For 5 Players With £20m Funds?)

Law says Villa will bid a £5million for Grant Holt, 31.

I did ruminate the other day as to whether Lambert had signalled a no to Holt? Maybe not Holt:

He said at the press conference: 'Grant Holt was absolutely brilliant for me. In the three years I was there he was a huge part of what happened. But things move on. I need to know what`s happening at Aston Villa before I do anything. The chairman and Paul Faulkner know that and then we`ll try to bring players in."

£5million for a 31 year old? Up to Lambo really but..........!

Certainly think we`ll see a new central defense next season and that we need to. He Lambert bought 21-year-old Spanish defender Ayala from Liverpool last year. Looks like his time last season was spoilt by injury and he only played seven times.

Norwich official site profile:

And on Snodgrass? According to the report Lambert tried and failed twice to take him to Norwich and now the Leeds winger has just one year left on his contract. 24-years of age so fits in with us wanting to build for the future maybe and could cost far less now that his contract is running out....

Leeds official site profile:

And then finally, 21-year-old Phillips, who scored 18 goals for Blackpool last season according to the report (but then, they say he is pictured and he isn`t!) and on this BBC page: where he refuses to be drawn into the transfer links. However, his wiki and his profile page don`t agree on that goal tally! have him down as having scored 7 goals, 1 from the penalty spot.

The Blackpool profile page (Click Here) says "The England U-20 international signed from League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers for £700, 000 on the final day of the 2010 summer transfer window. Blessed with lightening pace and a bag of tricks the youngster can play in a variety of attacking roles and has slotted well into the Seasiders' 4-3-3 formation."

I still wouldn't mind paying 5M for Grant. Where else could you get a striker for that who'd scored 17 goals in the PL. Forget about his age, he's good for 3 years. Would also take Phillips and Snodgrass. Not sure about Ayala though.

5m for Hoult seems a bit steep. Yeah he scores goals but he is 31, we have Bent who can score goals...

Raiding Norwich's squad and their transfer targets is a recipe for only finishing 12th (...and only then if the players over-perform). I thought the reason Lambert joined Villa was to target higher achievements at a bigger club??????

Adam Johnson please

Good shout krfeskivilla.

Hmm. Adam Johnson sounds good, but when you have a 'limited' budget, do you go for just one expensive player or a number of players to bolster your weaker positions? The real-life managerial decisions as opposed to the fans' dreams?
10/06/2012 11:10:00
Adam Johnson all day long! He will have a chip on his shoulder for being left out of the England Squad, got something to prove, I think he is **** hot personally. He was downings replacement at boro, but 10 times better!!!!

Adam Johnson could be terrific but would probably cost £15 million and stupid wages. If we could get him on loan then maybe. Johnson has already proved he has a "difficult" personality (and we already have N'Zogbia for that role) as well as not impressing Mancini much. Phillips would be a cheaper option. The player we have most missed in the past two years is James if we could get him on loan. As to Holt, if PL wants him then get him. He scored 17 goals last season (nearly half of what our entire team managed). I think Snodgrass could be signed maybe in a deal involving Delph. Norwich played good football last season and were very adaptable tactically but the weak spot was the defence, rarely keeping a clean sheet and conceding a fair number of penalties. In order to help our current defence out and reduce pressure on it we need a new Stan and a new/or the current Milner. I can't see all four of the current defence leaving (contracts, high wages, few suitors). I'd like to see Lichaj and A.N. Other as full backs and Dunne (just tell him he's playing for Eire) and A.N. Other or Ciaran Clark at the back. Looking forward to the new season. Things seem positive again.

It seems that the perception of the press is that Villa are shopping at the cheap end of the market. None of those would put a dent in his £20m 'war chest'.

Our problem is that we need to replace 3 out of 4 defenders AND find a replacement for Stan before we even think about attacking options
